To me, Kristen looks sort of like a younger, more edgy, more high-fashion version of the old wicked crone from Snow White on the cover
.
I'm going to be completely honest and say that I don't find this cover is as visually stunning as so many of you do (from an aesthetic point of view, I find the angle Kristen is photographed at to be completely unflattering to her very strong, severe features, and the text just cheapens and practically ruins the entire image), but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate it for it's inspired social and political commentary. I think Meisel was spot on in referring to the tragic disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. For the past 100-something days, the oil spill has been omnipresent on television, on the radio, on newspapers, practically everywhere! Meisel could not have chosen a better topic/event to focus his socially analytical lens on this time, particularly because this single event has DEFINED the entire year. This cover/editorial captures the zeitgeist of the year 2010 more artistically and imaginatively than any other fashion magazine has done this year. And for that, I commend Meisel and his team.
