Vogue Italia August 2010 : Kristen McMenamy by Steven Meisel

This cover Literally took my breath away. Pure perfection. I love the colors, the text, Kristen & the art direction! Love it.

* The theme sort of reminds me of an editorial in August 2010 of Us Vogue

Beauty in Vogue Preview

Simulating a glow tan to avoid UV skin damage. Popular with celebs and also (and above all) amongst those forced to stay in town in summer

A body and face with a biscuit colour highlighted by real freckles like those of Gisele Bündchen.

An Oscar (or Croisette) red-carpet tan like Jennifer Aniston's or Cameron Diaz's. Or the dark, intense tone of stars like Beyoncé or Anastacia.

Today we can choose the skin tone we prefer. Of course, we have to use tan-simulating products to achieve perfection.

Makeup artists know very well that a fake tan gives a better effect on ultra-pale skin than multiple sunbathing sessions, even on Venice Beach.

Supermodels and divas keep their pampered, ultra-delicate faces out of the sun while nonetheless displaying the healthy glow you get if you spend a few hours in the open air.

Sarah Jessica Parker, for example, admits she keeps to a barely golden shade because anything darker would be vulgar.

Kate Moss is a fan of the bespoke shading which Susie Lung creates personally in her London beauty salon. Penelope Cruz and Nicole Richie in Los Angeles adore the golden bronze of California Tan.

The best known of all is Portofino Sun of Beverly Hills, spa to the stars, at 9431 Little Santa Monica Boulevard, Canon Drive. A palette of as many as twenty-five different shades to choose according to the colours of our eyes, skin, hair and even of the dress we're wearing.

Naturally enough, the spa is a constant favourite among celebrity clients like Paris Hilton, Jenny McCarthy, Gisele Bündchen, Mariah Carey and Hilary Swank, and it's always over-booked on the day before Oscar night.

How do we choose the right shade?
Contour Tan creates an optical illusion of greater definition as if the muscles were sculpted through hours of workouts.

Clear Tan is a uniform shade, the skin's natural colour given a more even tone; it doesn't rub off onto our clothes. But the one that made Portofino Sun famous is Custom Tan, shades that are fine-tuned practically by computer.

The latest version is Magic Tan, a natural, golden colour that is perfect all year round, something Sandra Bullock, Rachel Hunter and Pamela Anderson have already tried for themselves.
