Vogue Italia December 2016 by Bruce Weber

I've only just realized that it's in fact the entire issue that's just about dogs! :o Tragic!

A tragic issue indeed. Absolutely nothing here appeals to me whatsoever and I find Bruce Weber to be terribly overrated (this issue being yet another prime example). Please wake me up when Meisel's January cover is here..

There's one thing about giving to a photographer an entire issue (or almost an entire issue) to shoot. That photographer needs to be versatile and to work with stylists who pushes him.
I don't want to be the advocate of Meisel but he has range. He can do simple portraits, risk-taking eds and very edgy things too. I&V, Sorrenti and others can do that too...

Weber is great, he is a genius but he can't handle an entire issue. First of all, his obsessions has been showcased in every publication possible. Animals, silliness, humor...We have seen it many times. It's beautiful but what's the point..

I love Roversi but i would never gives him an entire issue to shoot. Testino also is quite limited today...
M&M are lucky they can steal from anyone but it doesn't really make them interesting.

Everything is good and appealing so far but not enough to spend on Vogue Italia.

Maybe VI should select the theme and get a photographer to interpret it. Or maybe they did, and Weber responded by opening his vault of dogs and homoerotica. Either way, it's a complete failure. Doubt whether this will sell even at their level.
Klein, M&M, Lindbergh and Weber had two chances each, time to bring in someone different! McDean deserves another chance, and maybe Mikael J, I&V, Luchford, or even a wild card like Annemarieke v Drimmelen, Akrans or Moon.

Also, difference of opinion, but I think Roversi is a far better portrait photographer than Meisel. The latter does succeed with thematic photography as he's able to expand more with referential and tongue-in-the-cheek brilliance, but his portraits always look like they may have been done by an undead Avedon. I wouldn't ask Roversi to interpret excess, sex, or subculture, for instance. But he could be a great idea for next year's Age issue.

Bruce when he concentrates on the beauty of physically-fit bodies and nature in harmony is unmatched in high fashion.

Bruce when he indulges in his love of canines and their whimsy is the equivalent of people that want you to sit through their hundreds of pics of their baby. And when matched with VI’s obnoxious layout, is achingly unbearable.

It’s like a slightly better Good Housekeeping issue with sexier models. Without exaggeration, the worst VI issue ever.

The non Meisel issues are special issues. When Meisel shoots the cover (and main ed) the magazine is the same, with works of another photographers. I hate to think that they have an identity crisis, when the magazine used to have simmilar editorials of the regular photographers with their respective aesthetic. Most of you say that because the cover was made by another artist using their own style. I don't like when another photographer is copying Meisel because they have to make the cover. That's ridiculous. I don't know why Steven doesn't shoot all the covers (it's a freaking mystery), but I'm not mad with Franca because she doesn't have a choice.

^^
If they are special, they should make them special. A theme is not enough.
I'm sorry but this could have been published in CR FASHION BOOK.

Maybe it's the choice of photographer that is not special enough. I would love to see a Solve Sundsbo or I&V issue.
Maybe a non-fashion photographer issue can be great.

I mean, the best VI ed this year was the glamorous one with Vittoria and the best cover was the Bella Hadid.
Those two things comes from their regular photographer so...

On the male cover: model Carson Aldridge (with the dog hat) and ballet dancer Chase Finlay.

I'm not really animal crazy so all of this just looks a bit indulgent. But truth be told once i bought at a charity shop a proper hardback "art book" from Conde Nast, that i gave to mother called, "Vogue Dogs" , so clearly they do like this type of thing.

Is there a calendar for 2017? They gifted one last December, it was quite useful.

As much as I love dogs, cats are way more fashionable hahaha.
What a unique theme.
