Vogue Italia May 2009 : Sasha Pivovarova by Steven Meisel

Meisel definately has a style. It might be hard to recognise because it's disguised by the amazing variety of themes he works with. Anyway it's there and you can see it in his exacting compositions and a lack of natural poses in his models - well these are the defining elements from my perspective.

well i guess it depends on what you would call "style" :innocent:

i would think the themes are more so geared toward art directors, creative team etc. but maybe i'm wrong...and i just said it was hard to recognize for those who don't follow his work!

ETA:..lack of natural poses? hmm..i don't know, I&V & every other fashion photographer, much? ..for me, what sets Steven apart is this hip glamour his work has and a little something else that's more insightful, to me.

anyway, i love Meisel so...

Well, what he's really good at and always succeeds with is extracting the essence of someone else's style. Sometimes it seems to be only that, sometimes it's more than that (or maybe it just seems that way because I don't know all his refs, lol).

In other words, he can be GREATLY overrated, but when good he is brilliant.

when i saw the thread title i was all hyped up but then i saw the edit... and then the cover... :(

and thats it. im not gonna buy this. that odalisque-like shot with a bare bum is pretty vulgar to me, :ninja:.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh. such a waste. -_-

wow. i cannot disagree more. this is amazing. very rich looking and if what jadabelle said is right, it looks like it did cost a lot of money. rich colors and fabrics. I love sasha and it looks like her - she is not retouched to death like some of the girls have been in other meisel stories. i also love the guys! espically the one from the givenchy ads. he looks great, although sasha doesnt seem to act well with them. Also this is a bathing suit story! please keep in mind. i have never seen a swimsotry like this anyway. very original. i do agree that the cover graphics are not great. he should hire a different art director. it looks to amature.

Ah, I don't like this cover, if you are going to do an Arab theme then use an Arab model, since she is white have her wear something Americans or Westerners can relate to.

^for sure ...
and when you're doing a sexy prostitute sort of theme chose a prostitute ... why prostitutes should not have their chance ???

oh and the theme is VACATIONS in Morocco !!!!!

and it's true a white should wear outfits for whites ... and black outfits for blacks ... what would it be ?

Pipe down^_^, I made that initial comment to tease, because I read a topic over on models.com about lack of ethnics used by top designers, I know they want to make big bucks, but I fail to see how the top designers would lose money by having a few more ethnic faces on the runways, are people going to look at them and say they are not white so that outfit won't look good on me:lol:.

With my generation at least where I am in America most young people who are my friends are very open minded, so I fail to see how sales would be lost.

I didn't intend to go off topic, I meant my post as a joke, but I had to because I could tell by your post you were a little heated.

Oh ya, and going by my highschool days, black people would wear Extra Extra large clothes when they are close to my size:lol:, that is not how I would dress, since I don't want to look like a walking hanger, even when I buy medium or small shirts from abercrombie they are still a little loose for my liking, but that is my body type for you.

what are you saying about the black people wearing baggy clothes..that has noting to do with your argument about the cover...anyways I like the editorial..who cares if a white model is on the cover Sasha is a popular face Steven enjoys shooting her..when she gets dressed up in these clothes to play a Morrocan woman she is becomming an actress..Actors play roles that are not themselves thats the point of the job

I was joking about the black people wearing baggy clothes only,(that part had nothing to do with the cover), it was a response to berlin about what black people would wear:lol:, I have a different sense of humor, which comes across as mean sometimes, but that is how it is.

I don't care what color the model is as long as they have a great look which Sasha does. I was just trying to make a wee bit of fun out of this quote by sounding very narrow minded, which apparently I did because I got a response from you and berlin.

Frida Giannini, the Gucci designer, said after the show, “I think it would be great if there was an industry initiative on this issue, because I am always looking for black models, or even Chinese or whatever, for the shows.”
“I’m after a specific kind of look,” she added, “and I request the agencies — I asked last season — to send me someone interesting. But they never send me anyone very new.”

Full article, you have probably seen before.

My main point is models, regardless of ethnic background, if they have the look can sell anything, which is proven by this very cover.

That may be... but when other people see your posts they aren't going to automatically know that you're joking. There are people here from all over the world... and what you say can be interpreted in many different ways. So you might want to keep in mind when you post that rudeness & disrespect of any kind are not tolerated here.

Thank you.

^^ Ya, I know, I just thought people would look at my profile and see I was black, so they knew I would be joking, plus that is a big stereotype that all black people dress in a way that is a form of hip hop, which I thought would be another hint as to be joking, but I will respond appropriately from now on.
