What Are Your Thoughts On Plastic Surgery?

If the only reason for plastic surgery is vanity then I'd say you're a bit insane to put yourself under a procedure that could potentially cause fatality or disfiguration to an otherwise healthy body. I understand how people with facial disfigurations or enourmous breasts might want surgery and I don't disagree with it. However I've seen far to many pretty girls or average girls go for augmentation (rhinoplasties, breast surgery, liposuction) with awful and sometimes quite damaging consequences.

I don't like the way I look but I won't be one of those girls.

I agree. And as I said, you can never be sure about what is coming to come from the surgery, no matter how talented and reliable the surgeon is. It's the same thing in all medical operations, not only plastic surgery. But the real risk is death. Again, I am sad that people don't think of plastic surgery as serious as any other medical operation.

I feel that plastic surgery is great if you have serious self-esteem problems and are simply unhappy because of the way you look. I don't have any problems with smaller "surgery" like botox, etc. (who, as far as i remember isn't even classified as plastic surgery)

there is basically zero risk with cosmetic surgery. The only reason it got a bad reputation was because some people are so desperate for it, they have numerous operations too close together, or because it is expensive, so people go to an el cheapo surgeon. well of course something is going to go wrong! if you go to a skiiled and reputable surgeon, and are in good health(a good aneasthesiologist will not give you an anaesthetic if you are not healthy enough to have one) there is no reason you wont be as safe as you are having any other kind of surgery, be it necesary or not. there is certainly no need to try and scare people out of plastic surgery. I can't understand the mentality behind not fixing things that you are unhappy with in your life? we do it for everything else, so if we have the option to fix what we are unhappy about, or that makes us look not as good as we could, why in the hell wouldn't you jump at the chance right away?

i think everyones face tells there story, with their laughter and smile lines, and the smile they share with their mother but it would be a shame to loose that but you never want to anyone to feel uncomfatable in their own skin so i would support anybody i know if they wanted plastic surgery.i wouldnt have it myself as im too squeamish, i probbaly should have it though:heart: xx

So you think non-plastic surgery is 100% safe if done by a skilled surgeon? Do you know that there is always a risk? The most risky part is the anaesthetic, not the actual "cutting up". There are things that cannot be predicted in your condition, and can come up as surprises.

I am not suggesting everyone who goes to have any kind of surgery, be it plastic surgery or regular, but there is always a risk of losing your life or something going wrong. Don't ever take medical procedures lightly. In this era when people are popping pills like crazy its no wonder people think everything in surgery is riskless.

As for getting rid of being self-conscious of something by changing yourself physically... do you know that self-esteem comes from the inside? I think it is ok to fix something in yourself, but if you do it so you wouldn't be self-conscious or to fix your self-esteem... I am sorry, but it won't help. You won't see the difference in yourself if you have a distorted view of yourself.

FG, I myself am not a huge fan on botox and facelifts- the great thing about cosmetic is that there is so much more to it than just being able to eliminate wrinkles.
WL, i am well aware of how dangerous an anaesthetic can be- but as I said, no decent anaesthesiologist will give on to a person without doing a proper health check and monitoring them carefully through out the surgery, with a team assisting them. and the ammount of operations some people have can be a factor in danger when they go overboard. no, it is not risk free, but you're a hell of a lot safer than you are driving your car and a number of other things we do every day without thinking. once again, it comes down to being properlymonitored, which a lot of desperate people take shortcuts on. Unfortunately, people take advantage of that, and this is when it becomes dangerous. sure, there is the chance you will die on the operating table when you go on it for ANYTHING. But the risk is so low it's ridiculous. and it has nothing to do with our pill-popping society. I know so many people who get perscription strength painkillers that they can't last a day without, but who voice narrow-minded and uneducated views about cosmetic surgery, and would never dream of doing it. the two could not be more different than each other.
Yes, there are people who have some warped ideas about themselves, and do crazy things- however self esteem does not come from the inside any more than it cannot be destroyed from the outside. we can't make ourselves think anything we want just by will, and personally, it would be terrifying if we could! who would want that? and if it is about self esteem, I'm sorry but it will help. Millions of people the world over have been given a meaningful life just by having a simple operation. how wonderful and amazing is it that we can do that if we choose? i'm my opinion, it is a crime to try and make people think there is anything wrong with that. I encourage everyone who has had cosmetic surgery to be loud and proud about it. you've taken control to change your life and make yourself the person you wanted to be. and for some it isn't about self esteem, it's simply about making the most of yourself. what I've said before is I have an ugly nose. I will save and save and save for years to get the best team working on me possible. when I have it done, I will no longer have to dislike my nose anymore. it's that simple.

I can only think of Barbie and Ken when Plastic Surgery is mentioned...

I'm okay with some types of plastic surgery, but not with all. For example, if someone is disfigured by an accident or birth that is considered not normal or unhealthy, then I agree that plastic surgery is an option. But if someone goes and has a boob job or gets their lips plumped to make themselves "sexier" then I don't agree.

On another note: When I was 15, I had my eyelids done due to one eye being slightly bigger than the other. It was not really noticeable, but I was very self conscious about it.

I had a nose job 3 years ago.If you have any questions, send me a private message:flower:

It's funny how in few days I have moved from anti-plastic surgery to pro-plastic surgery. I am definetily getting something done when I can.

Personally, i would like to have my boobs reduced however i dont think i ever will, as i have quite a problem with the way i view myself and i think i would not be able to stop at just one procedure- i would keep going on all other slight imperfections that i see in myself. imperfections that make me me!!

I think the first thing to do if you are really unhappy with a part of your body, is to look at WHY you are unhappy- is it really because of that part of yourself or is because of your attitude and feelings towards yourself. If, after examining the problems, you decide that your really would be happier if you corrected your body issue then go ahead. I don't have a problem with plastic surgery at all, as long as it's not being used as a solution to much deeper issues within yourself.

There is nothing wrong about. Whatever makes you happy I believe... Well as long as it isnt extreme looking lol

Actually, my mom has had some things done. She had botox, a chemical peel and a new type of natural face lift. No one would ever think my mom would have done this! She doesn't look plastic or unnatural.

Many, people would be suprised to know how many people do get plastic surgery. You have to basically fight to get appointments!

I have also found out some people I know have had it too... I never even suspected.

My step dads bro had a nose job...

My mom old business partners wife had a face lift that I know of.

Our next door neighbor who is 35 has had a breast job (you could never tell), and lipo on her legs and stomach.

I think many assume that it is not that common because if its a good job you usually can't tell. So, people only notice the extremists of plastic surgery.

Personally, I would get lipo and thats about it. It didn't seem to harsh when my next door neighbor got it. I could never get cut up though... im a wussy.

I don't think it's any of my business unless the wearer doesn't appear to mind. But even then, it's not my place to say anything.

I will need some kind of surgery for a huge scar on my face. I think it's kind of rude for anyone to condone all surgeries in light of us wounded folk.

I also think I have the worst undereyes for my age. They bother me so much now, but I can't imagine what they might look like when I'm older. I don't want perfect eyes, but less distracting ones.

Maybe I'll blossom into a perfectly spiritual, non-physical being like we're all apparently supposed to be. But I'm not counting on it anytime soon.

Speaking of which, is the pressure to not care for perfection sometimes stronger than the pressure to be perfect? I'm just measuring in terms of rudeness. I mean, you rarely get bashed for being imperfect, but if you have a little surgery, everyone's all over you. It's ridiculous.

That's an interesting question. Perhaps you could raise it in one of the Heart and Soul threads.

i say, if you want...go for it. but do sufficient research...

and, im very serious right now, evaluate whethor or not the reason you want the surgery is purely to "improve" yourself cosmetically, or is it rooted in some deeper, emotional reason? if this is the case, id think twice...you should work from the inside out...otherwise, you will never be happy or satisfied...and youll end up beign one of those people who are addicted to plastic surgery because they need to fill something...

i guess first learn to be self loving and self accepting with the cosmetically untouched beautiful YOU. then if theres something that still irritates you, give it a thought...

you know, it's easy for all of you people to say "oh, plastic surgery is fake, i'll never get it, it's awful and wrong etc". But imagine being born "ugly", being bullied for your ears, nose, teeth or whatever. This is a bigger social unjustice than being born into a poor family for example. Like, anyone could potentially become Bill Gates but very few people can become Claudia Schiffer. And they can do NOTHING about it, not matter how hard they work on their "self-esteem" or their intelligence or whatever other virtues. IMO plastic surgery is one of a few ways how one can correct the unfairness of life. ON the other hand, i totally don't understand getting surgery for things that are easily corrected without it. Like losing 8 pounds with lipo, just plain stupid. You could lose the same amount healthily in about 3 weeks, with right diet and exersise. HOwever, this doesn't apply to gastric bypass, stomach stapling etc, cause this is often the only way these people can live.
