Sounds SO cliche, but... I'm visiting NYC for the first time Wednesday for a week with my boyfriend and I'm in need of some advice as far as what to wear over an outift when we go out at night. It never gets any colder than the upper 50s here, so Hollister halters, ruffle skirts and Rainbow sandals are the norm year-round

My question is what do you wear out at night to keep warm? What's the typical length you've seen out? (not just in NY, but anywhere with dropping temps) Do people bundle up at night with long-sleeve layering, or wear cute strappy tops with heavy coats/jackets over them?

One more thing... do bars/clubs in NYC have coat checks? If so, how does it work?

Thanks in advance

I haven't lived here that long, but I would suggest jeans with boots and a nice long-sleeved shirt underneath and a warm but stylish coat. Oh, and pretty accessories!

Cocktail Attire for winter

What are some good things to wear to Cocktail parties in the winter...dresses or pants??

whyd this end up in the fashion daily ?_?
personally i would always pick a dress over pants anyday... and noone can go wrong with the little black dress- jazzed up a little, of course ^^

I imagine myself wearing a lot of darker colors, especially when it comes to coats.

I like the way Harry Potter scarves, pea coats, jeans, and sporty shoes. I know, not winter appropriate but I love the feeling that my toes are cold and I can't wait to get home and roast them next to the fire. ^_^

haha this thread reminds me of when ever I or any of the girls from my city go anywere .. they always say you can spot the scouse girls a mile off you never wear coats.. here it can be snowing but well still be in little dreses etc. we just grin it up and bear it

I think that darker colours would be more apropiate, bright summrey colours would jsut seem out of place imo.

Evening wear?

I have a semi-formal holiday party (black tie optional) to attend on 12 December and I’m lost as to what to wear. I’m scanning sites and bored at the typical choices. My style is a dress between street style and classic/elegant. I would like a dress to be cocktail length. I don’t want to spend more than $200 on an outfit (shoes not included). Does anyone know of any websites for inspiration or has any advice?

TIA!

^ You might try wearing separates. Like buy a sequinned sweater, and wear it with a skirt or pants you already have. I have black velvet palazzo pants that I wear with a top half that may not be officially evening wear. If you're just buying half an outfit, your $200 will go further ;)

Ooh, eveningwear in winter, that's a huge issue for me as I often have to attend operas and semi-formal receptions in mid-winter. Always looking for ideas.

I've seen people wear short dresses with fur(ry) coats and high high heels with bold flashy accessories...though it's not really my style...

I wish I could do the short and sleeveless thing, but I get so cold easily...eek!

For me:

A beaded angora/mohair sweater or even cardigan, with beautiful bold accessories, for example, go a long way. It's best if it has a beautiful decollete.

Velvet is always good too both on top and on bottom; I have a gorgeous Vivienne Westwood velvet evening suit which I can wear as separates.

I used to have a great long wool pleated skirt which would make anything look sweepingly dramatic (until it got charred in fire...). Now I have a black tafetta skirt I pair with a bustier or white shirt...

Also worn silk l/s dresses with lace stockings (over nude pantyhose...shhh...invisible and warm!)

Vintage Alaia

Antique dresses are also beautiful:heart:

Stoles are your friend

What sort of places/scene will you be going out? A lot depends on the sorts of people and the level of 'formal' you're going for. If you're going to fancy dinners and need like real 'evening wear' of course there will be a coat check. If you're going to 'parties' or clubs or out dancing, it's a bit more difficult.

Do not underestimate tights. Tights are the warmest thing you can wear. Going out here in the winter I usually wear shorts and layered shirts or a short dress with lots and lots of tights, and some kick@ss boots -- which also avoids the dreadful "it's raining/snowing and my pants dragged in a puddle and now I'm soaked to my knees for the next 6 hours." If it gets colder I put a pair of fun fishnets/lace tights over a pair of wool ones, or maybe even thigh-highs or legwarmers. I always wear boots, probably makes sense to leave your sandals and open-toe things home :)

Weather changes quickly here so layers are most practical. I wear a lot of black drapey things so wearing 4 shirts and peeling them off depending on where I am is more or less how it goes. You should expect rain or cold or something at least one day you're here, and people DO still go out.

Some bars/clubs have coat checks, most do not and it's a huge pain to wait on the lines anyhow most of the time. I rely on carrying a huge bag and doing the old 'stuff my scarf/gloves/hat inside the sleeve of my coat and then sit on my coat' trick. It's really annoying but you get used to it pretty fast, and it also justifies investing in a really cute coat or jacket every year :)

Also, yeah, layers -- it gets quite hot inside most clubs/bars and it's not uncommon to see girls in a strappy top or little dress once inside, but like me they've probably got a sweater or cardigan or three shoved inside their coat sleeve with a scarf and hat and gloves. It also gets much colder at night than during the day, so even if it's decent during the day you should be prepared for it to be chilly once it's been dark for a few hours.

Depending on where I'm going, I either wear a warm lined leather jacket over a sweatshirt or sweater, but I also have a mid-thigh length belted hooded really structural wool coat -- either sort of thing will be fine!

well. I pretty much go for a dress paired with my long wool navy trenchcoat + gloves, scarf and a hat. The outerwear, especially the coat keeps me warm to and from the 'party'.

Under I normally wear a dress or a skirt and a loose topa nd a pair of nylon tights. Because as soon as I get inside I get very hot and start sweating, so no pants or long sleeves for me. I try to stay away from wool, cashmere, velvet and velour as well.. As this is often too warm for me.

I find a cute little leather jacket indispensible. It keeps you warm and looks hot.
Can also dress it up with a dress or down with jeans.

I love minidress + booties + little faux fur jacket. That's my perfect formal winter ensemble.
