What will emerge after the Skull symbol/pattern

Fashionista says pine cones:

So Over Antlers

pine%20cones.jpg

Lately, you can’t walk down the street without seeing antlers – whether in jewelry, screen-printed t-shirts, or bar decorations.
We think they might be going the way of skulls, and so we’ve moved on to pine cones!
For some reason, New York and Hawaii-based designer Catherine Weitzman’s gold pine cone necklace and earrings are sending shivers down our spine. Maybe because it reminds us of dipping pine cones in gold glitter to make holiday decorations in kindergarten, or maybe because they are cast from real tiny pine cones, but we’re really into it.

Let me make myself useful here. I've gotten sick of skull patterns. My thing is... does EVERY girl have to be some punk rock princess? It's the thing you do when you try to publicize a trend to try to make it appeal to people no matter who the heck cares. I personally don't do hard rock or metal or Goth. And maybe I'm being racist a bit, but how many of my own Black people are of the hard rock or (especially) Goth type? It's being overpublicized, and I've gotten sick of it. If you like rock, fine. Just don't make it into a trend in which every girl HAS to show her rockstar side. Like there's no room for being prissy or a girly-girl anymore. Pop is mostly dead or has given way to rock elements (think "Since you Been Gone" by Texas' own Kelly Clarkson, or even "U + Ur Hand" by Pink), but it doesn't mean that rock is the way to go.

Now in terms of what may replace skull designs, I guess one design that's a bit popular is this sort of edgy-looking letter "F." I've seen it on some Myspace profiles (mine is at: http://www.myspace.com/22957000 ), a shirt or two... just never knowing what it means. I think it has something to do with being famous. It is an edgy-looking letter "F" with a star within the letter "F." Someone mentioned the pimp dollar sign as being bad. Well, I'd rather something of hip-hop influence (I grew up with hip-hop) than anything kissing rock's backside. Smiley faces were the thing in 1997 and stuff, but I hated them after a while. I got a bit tired of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse as prints. I'm scared of dogs, but my least favorite animals are monkeys. I HATE monkeys to death no matter how many girls think monkeys are cute. A friend of mine likes polka dots, which I don't have a problem with. Haven't seen one skull in her wardrobe. Just a purely innocent lady with a sort of girly-girl image. A fun one as well. Perhaps never too late to go back to hearts. Hearts are fine. I love nighttime. Five-pointed stars or even four-pointed stars like in most ladies' RockYou! slideshows on Myspace would be pretty fine with me as well.

At least something beautiful. It can be small candy canes, hearts, stars, perhaps a return of polka dots. ANYTHING but skulls or anything annoying. Oh yes, flower prints are also okay by me.

^^^ you're funny!

Personally I think first the skulls will be replaced with skulls in other colors...then nothing...The whole skull-thing is because of the kliche...And Mc Queen...kind of ironic, I hope..

What I saw when I went to Stockholm the last time was A LOT OF russia-inspired scarves...black or cream background with big cartoonish colorful flowers...A nice contrast, but of course, it will not replace THE skull-pattern...

I'm funny? Thank you. I'm flattered. Excessive skull designs, however, is nothing funny. I always associated skulls with death. Why, then, would someone want to promote skulls and stuff? It's the slow, agonizing death of teen pop culture...

I've been thinking of a different kind of deal. I'm always fascinated about Asia along the Pacific rim. Asian style never seriously comes on like anything of American or European lore. I've been imagining if Asian flower designs would be popular. My favorite country in the world is Japan. Always fascinated by the beauty and even mystery of Japan. Here are some design choices in traditional Chinese fashion:

http://www.ancientmoods.com/products/Oriental_Fashion_Cheongsam-1631-0-.html (Oriental Flowers)

The thing about these Chinese fashions don't have a clearly defined and clearly repeated style. On top of that, these silk outfits can be pretty expensive. But when done right, these styles can be quite stylish on ladies. I'd probably also like seeing some Japanese or Chinese symbols and tell what they mean. I've hopefully made a case for more Asian-inspired design.

Whats next?
Pink Hearts, Yellow Moons, Orange Stars, Green Clovers and Blue Diamonds silly rabbits.

i think the card motifs is a good guess. for the past few falls i've seen patterns such as harlequin take over from argyle. and i have seen hearts...aop's seem to be getting very streamlined and not as "complicated" as a skull or a horse. just simple symbols, repeated and coloured up

how about other parts of a skeleton? Like errr rib cage? Leg bone? Skeleton hands..? Spine?

I wonder how long the skull thing will hang on?? Its bony little hands hanging on for dear life. I still see some stuff.

I dont know. I buy something whether I like it or not, not if its trendy or on its way out.

I dont own any skull stuff though.

I am seeing more rockabilly stuff....like horseshoes, and swallows. Plus pin up stuff. Pin up girls, retro rockers, that sort of punkabilly look.

Weapons jewelry seems to be staying strong. I've seen a lot of things like swords, blades, handcuffs, razors, guns and things of that nature. Rather grim in nature.

feathers are everywhere...but that might be the effect of last years owls craze
(if i was crazy, i could say something about that symbolism, belahhh english homework )

i think bees and butterflies...the latter was popping up all over the ss08 collections

yeah, everything is "edgy" even though it's investment bankers wearing them!

I just wanted to pop in and give the skull motif the credit it deserves. It's history runs much deeper than just hard rock bands and goth culture. It also stems from an upper class world of old money, Ivy League education, and exclusivity - think of the Skull & Crossbones secret society at Yale, from which many powerful and wealthy figures in history have emerged.

The motif has also long been a part of this "upper class" fashion - Stubbs & Wooten has long designed $300+ needlepoint slippers for the stereotypical Upper East Side "snoot" - and the Skull & Crossbones motif has for years been a part of the permanent collection of designs:

I also remember years ago when my fashionable mother bought an embroidered belt from preppy store J. McLaughlin. I was horrified by the skull & crossbone motif - the paradox of my clean-cut mother adorned with heavy metal symbols confused and frightened me - but I remember her saying that they were also associated with other things. Now I want to share her words with you all.

I know and agree with the fact that skulls are now tired, overused, and prolific. But I also think that the history behind them has gotten lost in the mix ... and just wanted to remind everyone of their history. Now if only there were a skull & crossbone smiley to end this post with ...

^thanks for sharing, kmccormi. skull & bones was only founded in 1832, but the motif in itself is much older.

the fleet of the knights templar flew the skull & bones as their symbol in as early as the 1400s. the motif has been around for hundreds of years – and, fashionwise, that is enough for me ;)

Skulls were also surprisingly big with the Puritans. A lot of old gravestoned have winged skulls on them.

Because of this like I like skulls done in that "preppy" way, it's less overdone than the whole punk rock thing.

tangerine,i love anything that relates to astral as well.

there's some other images that i would love to see---the mythological pegasus and centaurs. last year, antwerp student, vladimir lazarevic, designed and presented his collection round the latter. he did some pendants with a centaur.

I really, really love the idea of pegasus and centaurs. Perhaps Hermes the hunter too (apologies to those sick of antlers!).

Scott- It seems we have similar tastes: I love deers, wolves and ravens and would rather they get done to death.

I love the idea of cassette tapes too. I have been noticing a bit of a resurgence of them as a motif
