I liked the vibe at APT, and Rhone in the meatmarket district

Dancing it has to be Crobar on the west side although Vue was alot of fun too-it depends on the night...

LOVE APT, my wife and I will be throwing our 1 year anniversary party there in the middle of May.

I also love Bar89 - although the crowd is not the same anymore, it is one of the few places that have not gone down in quality of food/drinks/service despite the hype passing.

And, our absolute favorite is Angel's Share. That's where I kissed my wife (than a girl I just knew) for the first time

I have also heard good things about People loung on LES, but haven't checked it out myself yet.

In Paris, Buddha Bar is awesome - despite being a cliche.

I don't really go clubbing anymore, because I can't stand the velvet rope and the bouncers.

While we are on the subject, can anyone recommend anything in San Francisco? We'll be visiting in the end of May.

Faust- The Redwood Room @ the Clift Hotel is really nice, I recommend you have dinner at Asia de Cuba at the Clift because sometimes the Redwood room gets too crowded and the restaurant let's you dine and lounge in privacy...

Bios (Athens)
Its the best, extremely cool and non-pose, lots of students from the academy of Fine-Arts, free style abstract music mix usually played by laptop djs who rotate every hour or so, often hosts art exhibitions and theatrical productions.
*all miss-matched vintage furniture/lamps/decoration/couches in the bar are for sale (including fast selling 70s bar stools) so the decoration is always something fresh

GuruBarGuru (Athens)
great Tai bar restaurant with exotic decoration, asian lounge on mezanine and hype 'dance' area on the second floor.
*a favorite for 'private' celebrities, movie people and artists.

Soul (Athens)
The best small packed dancefloor in town, huge screen projections, open air spring-summer area, ethnic mix, post lounge style & decoration, two levels .
*best live MC's in town, very cute guys on the first floor

If you are interested in the old bohemian hangouts of Allen Ginsburg, Jack Kerouac, Bob Dylan etc. I recommend you visit Vesuvio, a saloon on Columbus near Broadway. There is an even divier historic bar across the street, Adler's Museum Cafe aka Specs. Also next to that is Tosca, favored by certain famous actors.

The "hipper" spots are all in the Mission District these days but I don't get over there much any more because I am not hip anymore ;) so I can't really give you specific recs. If you go down to 16th and Valencia you can just meander from club to club and find what you like.

What sort of atmosphere are you looking for? Maybe I could be more specific. Also, you could PM Mouko, I think he is much more up on the scene than I am.

Let me know if you want to meet up when you're in town, I live in SF.

Thank you! Maybe we could meet, hmm...

As far as atmosphere, I don't know, I am as diverse as one can get - anything that is of GENUINE style or anything with depth and substance, unpretensious, of good architecture or interior design, the list goes on and on. Any kind of pretension is a real turn off, so I know I'm taking a gamble staying at the Clift. I guess the atmosphere that I like most is the right mix of style, unpretensiosness and depth. I love a funky vibe. Do my ramblings help?!

BTW, I was under an impression that you are Russian. Am I right (not that it makes any difference)?

I was looking up the Rosewood and found this link, which you might find helpful. Don't miss the drop down box where you can choose to view descriptions of bars and clubs in different neighborhoods. I like 15 Romolo (see North Beach and around).

No, I am not Russian, I am wondering what led you to that? I do enjoy caviar, sturgeon, borscht, Dostoevsky and Bulgakov... ah maybe that was it, my reading list?

Supper Club and NL are classics. Go on a weekend though, they are pretty empty on weekdays.

I will definitely visit Reykjavik one day.
