why do you like/ hate marc jacobs?

thought i'd bump this thread so everyone can discuss whether marc jacobs is a genius or a copycat in the appropriate thread...
please keep your comments here and not in the fall 06 collection thread...

thanks...

I detest his use of "grunge" as fashion. He is the reason why the media relates grunge to plaid shirts and doc martens. I also hate the fact that he opened one of his shows with a marching band rendition of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I'm sure Kurt Cobain would love to know his songs are being used to celebrate the showcasing of super expensive clothes. Other than that, Marc Jacobs doesn't bug me

I like Marc Jacobs because he made this cute little color pencil kit for $18 with the animal shapes sharpeners! I also love his shoes! I have a pair myself :D

Heroin chic is back full force, but with some new elements taken from various moments in fashion history. What could be more appropriate than launching a new flavour of heroin chic with the best known opiate-exclusive band? :innocent:

I think MJ is fine - I like it but I don't really love it.

he is the utimate of fashion, i wasn't a fan at all until his most recent fw show, what a genius!!!!!!!!!!!! X infinity

don't forget that the genius also uses terry richardson to shoot his ads. terry is a very difficult photographer to retain, as he is usually busy shooting very important editorials for vice magazine.

arent they shot by juergen teller?

I like him because his clothing and accessories (uh, not counting LV. which I do not like.) are easily worn and approachable without being boring/cliché/passé.

lmfao...i like him cos i love the school-girl style...and he's keeping doing that..how fabulous!

i hate him because his clothes are overpriced beyond reason.... ANY reason!!! a cardigan that looks like it costs $20 costs $1,000.... that's fierce marc!!!!

I'm indifferent with him, because he's nothing special.
It's absolutely ridiculous that he is called a genius :yuk:

genious????? hahahahahaha, that's hot!!!! :D :D
i think chloé is a prettier version of what he does!!!!

I like some of the stuff Marc Jacobs does, I think he is a good designer. However, I don't get why he is so hyped, sometimes he does things that are awful and to me his clothes just aren't anything groundbreaking, though very beautiful and quite practical. But I just feel he does not deserve all the hype he gets, I feel like fashionistas don't sometimes have the courage to judge him because he has achieved such a status. I think his hype is much due to the celebrity fanbase he seems to have.

Anything of his (or his team's! ) I continue to cherish and wear through the years. I think he's the non-designer fashionista's designer! Or at least the source for people too lazy after years of searching for perfect vintage pieces!

Yea Richard Chai used to design for him...he would only come in for 2 hours and then leave for paris....Richard and the design team did all the work

I hate and love Marc Jacobs at the same time:blush: ,Personally, despite that he constantly does a rather"Nice" collection on the women's ready to wear part,I think Marc(or his team) has ruined Louis Vuitton,I cant believe the same man made all those tacky handbags!!!it gets worse and worse every year!! ,the last collection that i think shows his geniusness was the Suhaily line, and it went downhill from there!!!:yuk:

I found an excerpt from that interview that I mentioned (it was in the interview for which a link was provided in tfs post about which designers were gay/straight. Anyway, this interview was in Butt magazine):

Excerpt follows:

That National Geographic collection that you did for Louis Vuitton men’s wear this summer, was that your intuition? I love that collection.
MJ: Yeah, me too. You know I’m very happy with the team that does men’s wear for us, with Keith, and with Olivier and Willy and Peter. I sometimes wish I were more involved. but men’s wear is not something I’m really good at. In fact, men’s fashion frightens me. I really find men who are fashionably dressed terribly unsexy. I think fashion is something for women. It’s a terribly sexist thing to say, but I just don’t find fashionably dressed men attractive, and men who take too much time in the bathroom and spend too much time on their body, I find a bit poncy and silly. It just doesn’t turn me on. So I let it go to the people who find it a turn-on and who are really passionate about it. Well then why the hell are your clothes so small?! I don't really think the Marc Jacobs man is one that spends much time in the bathroom. At least I don't. They care about how they look but its an efforless thing. LV now yeah...mucho time.
It’s weird to have your name put on the collections they make, isn’t it?
It is. I feel a certain amount of shame. I feel a bit fraudulent in saying that I’ve been doing this men’s wear collection when I haven’t had daily involvement in it. Although I can say very honestly I don’t do every part of the women’s collection, I am involved in every aspect of the women’s collection. But with the men’s, it’s a bit different. I feel like a bit of a fraud, and that’s what’s tough for me. I don’t know what other designers feel, but I just don’t like to pretend that I’m something that I’m not. I’m not superman and I don’t do everything.

So... after reading that... I had a little trouble paying MJ's prices...

John
I can still pay for the shoes and some of the prints.

Actually, the best thing about LV menswear is Olivier Rizzo. If it weren't for him,I don't think there would be anything to it at all except really expensive Banana Republic clothes.

But for he to admit that, says alot about who he is and what he does. I mean,he IS a fraud! Not just in his disinterest for menswear but the way he blatantly copies vintage clothing.
I say that about a lot of menswear clothes. A whole group wanted to strangle me because I compared Gucci to BR. Some people really try and do a great job with higher end men fashion but some just do it to stamp their name on it and make a quick buck.
Prada and Marc Jacobs are known for using vintage a lot. But its the way they execute. You cant just walk in any old thrift shop and expect to find the things they produce.

I definitely have been more disappointed with MJ recently but he's not definitely not bad. Some individual pieces are cute, but most similar items can be found for much cheaper at thrift/vintage stores.
