Winter coats and jackets

^Thanks! But I must say that it's hard to do wrong with anything double breasted and belted

Personally... and I mean personally you have lost me... You could apply the why spend money on something if you dont need it to all clothes... and then fashion would not exist... as why would any of us spend money on anything fashionable whether it be designer or not... we could simply all have some very basic clothes... of anything... and not worry... I personally dont buy any clothes because I need them... I'm sure that if most of us are being true on here we could all say the same... we buy clothes because we like them rather than need them... we would not have this forum if everyone just bought things because we needed them and did not want to spend more than we need... because you are right ... we could just have one of most things and wear it again and again... but that takes away the fun of fashion... well it would for me anyway! Maybe i've misunderstood or simplified your view... and if I have im sorry... but just trying to get my point of view accross... In a way I maybe dont need 25 coats... but I like to not wear the same thing every day... but thats just me... and we will never agree as we simply obviously have a differing opinion on how we look at fashion... I like that my friends see me as fashionable... and they say they always wonder what different outfit i'll wear today... none of us are wrong in our opinion... just dif... but for me I do get wear out my coats... and some of them i've had nearly 10 years as they are not worn enough in one year so they wear out... so I see them as just as good a buy... I hope that makes sense to you!

I have worn the same coat every winter for the last 4 years, and I'm going to wear it again this year :flower:You see, some people don't like to spend money on something that you don't need. I don't need more than one coat (and who does - really?), and I think it would be a waste of time and money to buy coats just because I didn't want to wear the same coat twice in one week. I think that is absurd and spoiled, really. I have a dark brown wool trench coat that fits perfectly, you can't even see that I have worn from November through March for 4 years - now THAT is a good buy. And I don't really care if people see me in the same coat every day, why would I?

I do wear shorter wool coats in the fall when it's not absolutely freezing. Haven't found the perfect one yet, though, but I just got this one from Gina Tricot that I hopefully will wear every day until I switch to my wool trench coat. I might wear my leather jackets on days that aren't completely freezing though.

Please do not quote images

I do hope that it has the right length - I want it to keep me warm, but still not to be too heavy and unmanageable as coats tend to be.

I think you can be fashionable by wearing the same thing every day, style it differently and truly make it yours. Of course one shouldn't wear worn-out clothes, but having lots of clothes just doesn't make you stylish, chic or fashionable. Being all of these things requires that you think really hard about what you buy and edit your closet thoroughly, and that is harder than just going out and buying some fast trendy piece of clothing (which is why I almost never buy coats and jackets in high street stores).

Especially with outerwear it seems senseless to go for trends instead of something that suits you, because outerwear doesn't get worn out as quickly as for example a pair of jeans (of which I have loads). Which is also the reason I really do find it odd to have 25 coats - even though I live in a country with icy cold winters

I personally think that there is no point in having a such excess of clothes, it's a complete waste of time, money and energy and it serves no purpose. I think clothes can be fashionable and still have a purpose, so pulling the "But it's fashion"-card isn't really relevant...and I can honestly say that I have a very edited and basic wardrobe, but that doesn't mean that I only buy clothes because I need them. Quite the opposite. And no, fashion isn't about buying a lot of clothes - it's about making something special with what you already have.

I'd have to agree with Ida, I think what truly makes a more per say, 'fashionable' (loosely use of the word) person is having to play around of what you already have and twisting it to your own desire. Everyone has their fetishes with some sort of clothing item or shoes and accessories and one can stock up on them easily (basic soft tee's for me :ninja:) but buying the most trendiest/clothing item on every occasion isn't fashion, but for me personally, a waste.

Rachel Zoe may not agree with me but the woman has the money for such things  And a few days I was just editing out pieces of clothing I have and feel so much better afterwords... my closet is a bit empty but I still have something to wear everyday of the week, though I don't have much clothes to offer. Which is fine for me... as long as I like cute doing so :P I mean Karl Lagerfeld basically lives in a black suit, you don't necessarily see him switching it up all too often.

this has actually turned into a very interesting discussion...

I think it all comes back to the idea of quantity versus quality. If you can only afford a couple good-quality winter coats, buy classic, simple, and chic coats that can be interestingly styled with scarves, etc. Or look for a coat that can be worn a number of different ways.

Ida... Firstly I don't know how you came to the conclussion that thinking because I simply have a lot of clothes makes me stylish? I completely agree with your point that fashion is not about what you have or what you can afford its about how you put your look together... You are also soo wrong about me assuming my fashion is following current trends... as all the coats... and indeed all my fashion tends to be high end and expensive... I adore quality and designer names dont do it for me although a lot of my clothing tends to be designer... its the cut and material quality that I thrive on. There is so many coats out there all of different styles and shapes... and my 25 simply reflects all the different styles I have liked and wanted... And im clear not needed but simply wanted. Ellelesley is right most women have a shoe or handbag fetish... they are not huge on my radar... I'm more into coats, scarfs, and knitwear... I don't really know why... maybe cause its so cold in Scotland and I always feel the cold... but that's just me!

Ellelesley... again I have to say... I don't know how you took from my post that I rush out buying the latest fast fashion all the time... It's just not me!

Also i would like to say we are all different... if we all thought the same things this forum would be kinda dull... Also we are all erning our money or have it however we get it... How we spend it is up to us... as long as ints not illegal!

Personally we are just different as I think the complete oposite from yourself... but at the same time I'm not talking buying loads of fast fashion... but I like to have a lot of veriety... My look is very chic, french classic... with a good few twists... It depends how I feel when I get out of bed... what material takes my fancy today... do I want to layer or not... and maybe I do just have a coat fetish where some girls have a shoe fetish... Is that really so wrong?

I don't remember exactly how much it cost, I actually bought it in March but I really like it, it's really comfortable and warm.
And it says it's made of polyester (54%), wool (27%), acrylic (14%) and other fibers (5%).

williamstgirl, not only do i understand where you are coming from but i can align myself with you and your thoughts. thanks for being so clear and taking the thread a step further than just posting coats...maybe because lately i feel that my shoe collection has reached its saturation point and i have enough to play with for a long time so i'm onto coats and scarves this year. jackets and coats play an integral part of my artistic rythym and fine tune the look for me. they are very directional as an acessory.

i love summer but i miss wearing one of my fav coats... i did exchanged it with my friend Elijah after one show when someone stole his jacket after the gig and we went to the hotel to take some coat but he was all sweating after the playing and the smoking venue... so i let him my coat who was kinda cool and we were kinda the same size... well his a bit taller but we had the crazy silly idea of exchange them... and i loved mine but when i wear this is sooo awww i feel glowing!! hahah even when i did trashed to much touring over the UK and all... and falling at the night streets of Madrid argh...

the coat i got

I got another new fav that this season is gonna be very at shops again! A camel synthetic one i love it so much!! but i cant find any pic...
Also got a checked brit style one that i might find more sense to wear this season... and a green grunge one... but yeah... no matter what each season something pick up ur attention...

But that white is a winner always!! Also carries some good memories, vibes and energies!

I've just bought this Derek Lam Jacket.
IRL is very soft and versatile because of the double collar

I think part of what we're talking about here is the ethics of consumerism ...

I believe the choices we make as individuals, even and perhaps especially how we spend our money, are very powerful. Reading through tFS, you can see a wide variety of choices people are making, and few of us are 'perfect' ... whatever that may be.

Buying at the higher end often has social value, as often (not always, I'm sure) the people who make the goods have better working conditions and wages--some of the Italian workshops sound quite idyllic, in fact!

My own view is that I want to think about the bigger picture, and not assume that being relatively well off (in terms of the country where I live and the world) entitles me to anything I can lay my hot little hands on

There's this lovely little mom and pop restaurant with a lunch buffet where I go sometimes, and it has a little sign that says "Please, take only what you will eat." For me, the world has a sign that says "Please, take only what you will use." So that's what I try to do. And when I do buy something, I try to make sure I've chosen something that will last, and that was created in the best way possible. Not only is it much friendlier to the planet when I buy something that will last (like my Burberry trench--22 years now I believe!), but it's respectful of my time. I've taken the time to choose something I really liked, and I don't want my time to be wasted.

That's how I see the world ... but I realize not everyone is going to see it the same.

Aw sorry, I must of took you of context, and it is true I think everyone has their own obsessions or fetishes towards shoes, accessories or clothing, I've got enough tee's to live a lifetime :ninja:

But back on coats, I still can't find one warm enough jacket or woolly coat for frigid, -20C weather, at this point I think it's all about the layering underneath. Harder said then done, my school tends to be either too warm or too cold depending on the room and I hate the feeling of chills or stuffiness... cardigans and pullovers happened to be my best friend in fall and winter but I'd still like to have a few more options.

^ Just saw a very cool looking CdG down jacket in the Barneys catalog ...

I like to have several coats because I need them for different occasions and different temperatures. When I walk the dog and play with her and her friends it wouldn't be convenient to wear the same coat which I use when I go out for dinner, concerts or receptions.
In this part of the world winter can mean anything from a windy +5 C to minus 20, so I need a light wool coat as well as a thick down jacket and/or a fur coat.
