Winter coats and jackets

I have two coats and one jacket. One jacket for when it's not that cold (most of September), one mid-thigh coat for when it's semi-cold, and a long coat for the really cold days, which usually start in November. I don't need any more than that

warning: coat rant. :ninja:

I've been searching for the perfect winter coat for this season for about two months now. I know what I want it's just not out there, at least not for a reasonable price. As of lately I've really lowered my standards. I think my demands are pretty realistic. I just want one in olive, khaki or brown (no camel, thank you), or even black, in some sort of wool blend. And I just want a knee-length simple style with some nice details, a tench would be fine too. Or even a duffle coat in one of the previous mentioned colours. I can't find anything resembling this (where you have to be 6' tall to look good in it).:judge:
I seem to be on an impossible quest

I might just end up going to a tailor and get one made.

you "kind of love" it? it's freakin beautiful :o:blush::heart::D

i can't find it anywhere on the website...do you have a link?
it's so so pretty.

hehehe...I'd have to see it in person first before falling in love with it  unfortunately, it's only available online.

Here it is - the Cym & Ripple Coat

^J. Crew!
We don't have that here.. :(

Though I might have found one, it's one that I dismissed earlier but I think I got the right size this time. And even though it's slightly longer than I wanted it. It might look ok with a new pair of high heeled booties I bought today :grumble:

&there is the j.crew website.

and ebay has tons of beautiful Anthropologie and J. Crew coats.

^thanks, :flower: But I'm not big on buying clothes over the internet especially not something that I want to have a nice fit. Which is my main issue with coats.

I really like the coats featured in the Warehouse AW10 lookbook, especially this red tweed one.
Problem is, the difference between the item photo and the model photo confuses me: it seems that the coat has 3/4 sleeves in the model pic, but long in the item pic. A much brighter red also.
If anyone has seen this in real life, i would love some info! My local store is so small i doubt they will carry this one.

I've been looking for a coat for a trip I have. I'll be in NYC around Christmas and all I have are hip-lenght jackets. I really want to get a cape but I'm not sure it will be warm enough for that time of the year. And I really, really don't want a puffer. : / What do you all think? Can I get away with a cape and layering?

It depends what you will be doing... I think if its a wool cape it would be good... just layer up... but also I find if you are going out and in shops in NYC especially... they are always so hot inside and you end up being too hot and not enjoying the shopping... I think its always better to be a bit on the cold side if your going in and out... Its a hassle to remove loads of clothes when trying things on too... its just another consideration I always find in winter... Therefore I often go for something light and accept the cold... or the total oposite... big cosy coat... but no layering below so at least its only one thing to remove when trying on... you cant beat a fur for that I think or a cashmere coat

^ thanks, I will be going in and out of places tons but transportation will be walking/subway, so I see your point. I haven't seen anything 100% cashmere here, mostly wool blends. And fur for me...only fakes hehehe. But I'm also thinking of getting the cape and a couple of knit sweaters...still thinking about this!

So, I got this at zara, which I really liked, and the sleeves are longer on me. I'm still not sure about it, I wanted something longer and with a hood. This has a hood, but I'm not sure about the length. The way I see it, I have a month for zara to get in a coat that I'll love and is about the same price as this one, so I can exchange it. If that doesn't happen, then this will be my NY coat.... : /

I'm kinda scared hehehe.

Update: I actually purchased the Warehouse coat which i mentioned a few posts up.
A kind tfs member alerted me to the fact that it was available through Asos, which answered my queries just perfectly!

No idea why the Warehouse lookbook describes the coat with 3/4 sleeves (which it has not), but never mind.

The coat is absolutely beautiful in reality, a subtle, maroon sort of red, as opposed to the lookbook bright red photographs. The collar is also detachable. They are a tad small fitting, but really well tailored. Love it!

I have 3-4 decent coats but would like to add a duffle-coat.

dsoma: I would suggest buying an original military shearling aviator, but unfortunately they are expensive as well. I was in a military surplus shop recently and they had this gorgeous aviator but it was around 400 euro.

Anyone know where I can find cute jackets that fit petite girls? I've ordered one from J Crew and that turned out well, and I know Ann Taylor does petites but I didn't like their current season's selection. Are there any other options? And yeah, I've browsed the petites selection on Bloomingdales and Nordstrom but I didn't really like them (and if I did they were like $500+ *sigh...*).

i'm looking for a classic slim fitting tweed coat. why are these so hard to find??? grrrrrrrr :angry:

I'm looking for a black fur short jacket (the ones that fit just below the chest). It's almost impossible to find one around here...
