Your Interior Decorating Style...

Well, I searched & couldn't find another thread like this one ... if you know of one, please post a link ...

So ... this thread is to talk about ... your decorating style!!! Discuss ... ^_^

^ Thanks, Chrissy, I think that's the one I was thinking of ... but I think this is still a good topic for Personal Style ;)

steph, yes, definitely home decorating style ... :flower:

Well, I will start ... my decorating style is English cottage meets Deco. I have lots of things from the 20s and 30s, and many of them have a Deco touch, like dinnerware with Deco lines. I also have the other end of the spectrum ... Degue and other French frosted glass light fixtures and lamps.

I love flowers & Georgia O'Keeffe ... I find her prints very inspirational, and you'll find them around my house. I also like black and white photography. I have a couple photos from the Eames' personal collection ... one of them together in the office, and another he took of her. She's lounging in a chair wearing espadrilles (clothes too :p) with a huge smile on her face.

I like light woods ... I have a lot of pine and vintage birds-eye maple (I have most of a Moderne bedroom suite--the pieces are scattered around). My floors are oak and red heart pine. I have the pine finished without stain so you can see its own color, which is beautiful. I also like black lacquer Deco tables.

I love things that have little houses on them, especially with smoke coming out of the chimney  I have hooked rugs, dinnerware, many things with sweet little houses. Not by coincidence, my house looks like them ;)

Although I don't like to wear green--at all--and always struggle to find something to wear on St Patrick's Day (if I remember it ), it's an important color in my house. Almost every room has jade green as an accent color. I also collect glass in this color (as well as purple, some pink, clear, opalescent, etc.). I go to a great local glass show every six months, and pretty much never fail to come home with something--but sometimes it's pottery or dinnerware rather than glass.

That's another thing ... I love color. People whose houses are all off-white (string-colored, as Rosamunde Pilcher says) absolutely mystify me. My closet has color too, but my house even more so.

I like doing what people say can't--or shouldn't--be done. Red is an important color in my bedroom, but there's also lots of ivory, sage green, tan, light wood, and a bit of black. When my bedroom used to be blue (color I inherited), it was terrible for me--depressing, not restful.

^ And you know how terrible I am about pictures ;) I have some, but none of them digital ...

When I finally have my own place to decorate I think I'd like something that looks like a Parisian apartment meets a serene beach house (that doesn't have drunk spring breakers around it or in it) but I don't really know what that would look like.

^ Sounds interesting! :flower:

That's where all the agonizing comes in, as you contemplate how disparate elements are going to work together  I will say, though, that I don't remember any failures ... everything I've tried has worked.

One thing I've found important is to have a space with a personality. As you do what's appropriate for the space, that becomes a guide ... I've had what I thought were good ideas, and tossed them out because they didn't work for the space.

I'm going to be an interiorstylist, so im always busy with interior..

Dont really know how to describe my own style in english... Its modern combined with eeehm. how do i say this, nature elements i guess lol..

Like small salon tables from wood, where you can really feel the texture.. ?lol.. just rough material

I also combine new stuff with old stuff i find at second hand stores.. love to walk around and discover great furniture..
I also just got this beaaautifull cupboard? i guess its called in english.. for free!! will post a picture when i get it.

I dont like really busy interiors, i use color in my accesoires so i can change it and you have a whole new interior without spending to much money.

I love decorating. I am not trained but have been decorating for years both for friends and family. Its just something I'm passionate about!

I would say my style is traditional meets ecclectic.....Not sure there is quite anything like that. I just buy pieces I love an make them work:D I have original pieces from Africa and a few pieces from Afghanistan. I love black and white pictures and I also collect crosses from all over the world!

I'll post pictures so you can see. Excuse the faces in the pictures as I was looking for pictures that would pick up some of the pieces I am talking about. Anyone know what my style would be from looking at the pictures?

Oh and I am looking at getting these stolls for my bar area!

I am a big fan of lighting..
So I often start decorating from a particular light fixture..
and expand from there...

Here are few that show my personal taste, I think..

I still live with my mother and our house is relatively old (from the 50s) so it's hard to make alterations but basically I like things to be quite minimal and light in decoration.. and practical materials, everything my house is not .. if I'd have to rebuild it again, and if the decoration was up to me!, I'd definitely get rid of carpets first, and go accordingly to our environment (90% summer, desertic temperatures, and a lot of vegetation around the house) with bamboo floors, a few sliding glass doors, black tiles, lace curtains, lamps instead of bulbs in the ceiling, birds of paradise.. and.. hangings of exotic location souveniers would be strictly prohibited -_-.. same for random wood boxes that denote pirate treasure inspiration (which my mom loves!).. and I would definitely find my way through a handful of Atget's photographs to hang in the living room, not the Paris ones but those of random people he photographed during his life.. and an idea I like about my current house and that I would keep (with a few modifications) is a space for books built in our walls.. because it's both practical and the less furniture, the better for me. :ninja:
I guess what I'm trying to come up here .. is a house that would be very much hacienda-inspired in 'silhouette'.. but modern and clean in all decoration.. something that's clearly not part of the city or suburbs but doesn't make you feel in a farm either.. a mix of the two perhaps?.

Great thread! I have just recently bought my first house with my husband and now that I feel more secure I guess I am letting the interior decorater within me run wild!

My theme, after much soul searching and picture gazing is: plants, lamps, vases and books!

Indoor plants, beautiful lamps, vases with flowers everywhere and books on every wall!

Basically an intellectual-cluttered-granny-style look. However I have only just started out so of course, it is not quite perfect yet.

My place isn't actually decorated in any way, BUT, once i move and really think about getting my style going I know it will be very hard. I like too many different things. I love colour and houses that express the person and feels totally lived in. I think this is a reaction against my dad who likes his places to feel like hotels. He doesn't even have photos.

I love a great lounge room with low couches that just invite you in. Book shelves, light. I love a completely modern kitchen but i also love those rustic farm house kitches. I guess i'll just have to wait and see what my next place will be like.

I love interior design. I've always wanted to take a course or something and do it professionally, I just haven't had the chance to yet.

I'm moving out on my own in a few weeks and I cannot wait to put all the furnishings I've bought into my new place. I've collected many different pieces over the past couple of years.

My decorating style is very close to none...well, kinda Scandinavian. I am no fan of colour, I'm all for white, offwhite, black and brown. I don't own vases or plants or anything, everything is just clean and white. I do have some vintage furniture (mirror and dining table) from my great grandmother - we actually still have the receipt, it was bought in Sæby in 1927  So I guess my style is clean + vintage. I have pics somewhere...

the_ida .. it sounds beautiful  i think i am almost the same

i do like some colour.. just muted
i like an emphasis on different materials . textures

wheneveriwakeup , interesting choices in lamps !

Could anyone recommend a website that I could order wallpaper from? I'm looking to cover 1 wall in my bedroom. Something black & white, a contemporary floral design maybe?

I don't want to pay too much so I'm thinking online is my best bet?

Something similar to this perhaps:
