How Designer Zac Posen Works With His Mother to Expand His Brand; Swimsuits for Target
Target has sleek publicists promoting the debut of the capsule collection. In New York tonight, Target is throwing a blow-out 24-hour party for the launch, with special appearances from bands and DJs.
What's more, Target has been teaching Mr. Posen how to design a mass collection. Typically, the Zac Posen line makes 200 or 300 pieces for each style, compared with the thousands produced by Target.
Indeed, Target—with its vast marketing muscle and cheap veins of production—is teaching one haute designer after another how to make a go of a mass brand. A capsule collection from Jean Paul Gaultier, whose primary line has been troubled by complex designs and production delays, is in Target stores now. Rodarte's preceded it.
"A lot of my merchants really help educate our designers in what can be done," says Trish Adams, Target's senior vice president of marketing. She notes that it has been easier for Target to get call-backs from designers since the recession.
Target gave Mr. Posen sales reports and advised him that bathing suits could be a big seller in his market segment; the new line includes his first swimwear. They advised him on affordable fabrics and explained how to design a garment for mass production. "It has a lot to do with keeping it simple," says Ms. Adams.
Mr. Posen has taken it all in with gusto. "Picking the right poly-organza for a skirt—that does feel good," he says warmly.
He isn't abandoning his Zac Posen runway line. The luxury brand "informs every decision we make," says Mrs. Posen. "Is this brand-neutral, brand-negative, or brand positive?"
Is Zac Posen still too little-known to do fast-fashion collections without tarnishing his primary brand? "I think that it's going to hurt them," says Laurent Bourscheidt, executive creative director for STC Associates brand-management agency in New York. "I'm not so sure Middle America is very familiar with Zac Posen."
