Zhang Ziyi In Memoirs Of A Geisha

Are you kidding?!? Lucy Liu would've been terrible, that would've just made the movie SO mainstream and cheesy. Anyways I like Zhang Ziyi's acting, she was wonderful in both Crouching Tiger and Hero.

Agreed, I like her as a mainstream actress, but she would have by no means fit the role. She's highly Americanized and wouldn't worked with the image of the character in the least... The fact that she's Asian doesn't mean she can immediately play anyone of that ethnicity.

Zhang Zhiyi makes me cringe - she has a very limited acting range and always seems to act with her chin (1 jut, incredulous, 2 juts, determination.. etc ;).

She may have been typecast in all her past films so I'll withhold my full opinion til I see her, but I really doubt that she'll be able to convey that depth of character and graceful determination that Sayuri evoked in the book. Zhiyi does determination, yeah, but it's always a slightly childish, petulant determination that would totally undercut the geisha character :/

I prefer Koyuki (The Last Samuri) BY FAR - she'd be perfect, I adore how much inner strength she conveys

i do agree that koyuki would have been an awesome choice and that lucy liu would have been horrible...
but i feel everyone should give zhang a chance...
i didn't like her at first...i thought she was spoiled and limited as an actress...and the only reason she was popular was because she was pretty
but then i saw 2046 and i was amazed at her wonderful performance...she was able to hold her own against some of the biggest names in hongkong cinema...
so...i'm going to reserve judgement until i see the movie...

lucy liu is chinese but she portrayed japanese girl in Kill Bill.
from the make up to the hair done, i almost forgot her original nationality is.
but lucy liu potrayed a half-japanese half-chinese character in kill bill, while zhang ziyi will have to portray someone she is 0% of.

^ that's true. I've always found it weird that they chose her...i wonder how the film will turn out... :)

I think Koyuki would be great in the role of Hatsumomo, don't you think?

Wow, those posters are gorgeous! I'm definitely looking forward to that film!:):)

It kind of sucks how they didn't use a real japanese actress (like Koyuki). I understand Zhang Ziyi already has kind of a name for herself, but it sucks that in hollywood when they use an asian girl, they use her. It makes it seem like there is only room for one asian actress in hollywood. There are lots of very good Japanese actresses who have acted in period films from this era, and I feel like they should have been considered.

OK ... saw the trailer AND I TAKE IT BACK!!!!!!

Zhang Ziyi is chinese and I thought that there wud be NO way that some chinese girl would play my lovely lovely Sayuri-chan ... her background in martial arts helped very very much in one of the main things about the character ..how much and how good she was for dancing ... this is something extremely hard ... her performance is more than believable and you can see the "excess water" in her eyes .... the girl who plays young Sayuri is very very good ... but most of the backgrouds look super fake ...and some of the adornments are excessive (she looks like a wh*re).... but I'll see the movie ... the first poster I dont like at all.. the second? better!

Yay! thanks!

^ I know! I saw the trailer and I was like: WOW! definitely looking forward to it now. I like how classy they made the movie look....hope it'll be as good as the book! :)
