12 yr old Dakota Fanning in controversial new film role

While I agree with your arguement SIL, I'd appreciate it if you didn't refer to the way some of us Americans speak/spell as the 'bastardisation' of English.

No harm intended VainJane. We say 'bastardisation of our language' in the same way you probably call us 'Filthy Limeys' -in only the best of humour! See Dominic Monaghan on Jonathan Ross on the American language. Roughly about 4min 27 seconds in.

In fact shave his face and he looks like a 12 year old girl. Get him to do it.

for me it's not a question of whether or not she can "pull it off." It's more about the necessity of depicting child r*pe. i don't think it is necessary and in fact i think it's irresponsible and a bit disgusting.

I agree. Several years ago in this country a nine month old baby was raped. Although people need to be aware of such issues and deal with them, it would be totally wrong and disgusting if a movie were to be made about this; depicting the r*pe of a baby, who knows maybe in ten years time the climate will be ready fo such a movie - makes me shudder!

Perhaps if they all made it for free. But I smell profit and accolades.

i find that really distrubing!!
12 year old nude
i wouldn't do that i know wat freaks live in this world

Many times I´ve thought that she could be harmed by the roles she plays. She worked in "Hide and seek" a creepy (and bad) movie where she played opposite Robert De Niro. In that movie there were so many different twisted and horrible scenes, I don´t see how this somehow sexual genre could harm her any further.

Ah, it's a bit hard to interpret a joke when it's on the computer (instead of face-to-face) so that's where our lines got crossed!

For the record, I don't use 'Filthy Limey'.... I use 'stuck-up Brit' :flower:

But I too don't understand why it has to always center around the South when it comes to r*pe, murder of a child. Remember the movie where Sean Penn won his Oscar? It was in the South too!
I blame Faulkner & co...

No offense to any forumites who might be called 'Dakota', but really... Is her English cousin called Shropshire Dispersing or perhaps Colchester Disambiguating?

It seems that r*pe is the only way to be outre, now blaxploitation is 'okay'.

^^^^ shropshire lol

i personally would be ok with this litttle girl playing this role if she was happy with it .. i personally dont think she would be too a full extent .. i mean do you honestly think she properly understands the role .. i personally wouldnt and dont want to watch this film at all.

Wow. I can't believe so many people consider her an actual actress. She's only 12! I can't take any child 'actors' seriously. In fact, I kind of hate them.

ha, that's funny. I actually think Dakota Fanning's acting is annoying, or maybe it's her. All she did was scream in war of the worlds. Maybe I never got why this girl is so famous.

on both counts

have you seen Uptown Girls? She portrayed a Manhattan schoolgirl from an elite private school in the city who's parents are always preoccupied with their careers to even notice that their child is unhappy to a T. That's just one scenario. i haven't seen a child star that delivers a commanding performance since Shirley Temple, young Elizabeth Taylor and young Tatum O'Neal the way Dakota has shown in her short career.

I'm always stunned how talented she is. She'll be a stunner when she's older, too..I think she'll look like Charlize Theron. :D
Anyway I hope that the director won't make it too visual or disturbing.. I'm afraid he might just choose to go for the shock factor and abandon any sense of subtelty and whatnot..

i am more worried that this movie will increase the number of sick and twisted males who are a threat to little girls everywhere

The things pushy showbiz parents do hey to live through their children's glory....?

With all due respect Happiness, I think you have entirely missed the point of this debate. What has Dakota playing the part have anything to do with the film being made and how good it is? Not having a 12 year old in a r*pe scene somehow doesn't equate to pushing things under the rugs (just out of linguistic interest (not being sarcastic!) why did you use inverted commas there?) And the only discussion this will spark, believe you me, is that Hollywood is becoming more and more money hungry and that we, the Western world, are full of some sick sh*t.

And furthermore I dont want studio executives to determine the morality of a nation or how we view laws. I want the legal system to do that for me. If we had mawkish films about paedophiles having Titanic-proportioned success, we'd have lynchings in the streets. And that would be ridiculous. It is up to the police to make the system of reporting rapes, functional. People are already ridiculous about the paedophile anyway. It is such as exaggerated urban fear.

Yes because at 12 years old, she is making all her career decisions for herself?! Can you imagine what the sort of psychotic-bimbo-hillbilly mothers who push their kids into showbusiness instead of hope they will become doctors are like? Yeah Dakota, play in a r*pe scene and sew my arm back on whilst you are at it. Oh and Timmy is stuck down a well

ENDLESS KARMA Sienna, Thank F***K for smart people.

The sad thing is that she really doesn't need "glory" by playing this role. She already has a resume most adult actresses would envy. Clearly they are going for awards and notoriety now. I hope this doesn't backfire and tarnishher image.

I agree...but let me rephrase: I'm thinking more 'oscar glory'...she hasn't got that yet. I think Dakota is a brilliant talent, but she should pace herself. We know the way things usually go for child stars.... You only have to hear the acounts of older actresses now who say they felt they missed out on their childhood, went off the rails, etc etc
