Advice about Starting & Promoting a Fashion Blog - See Post #1 for Thread Rules

I agree, I would only add links to places I would shop at.

Would you label them sponsor add or Link or just mix them in to you link list?

Yes the best way is to distinguish them from the rest of the links by placing them on their own list.

Contracts are highly common for non PPC orientated advertising, and IMO PPC ads is something I highly recommend people to avoid unless what's offered is highly lucrative.

Hi, I would like to get some advice regarding my situation.

I've been blogging regularly for about 4 years now on livejournal. It started off as a personal blog, but in the last 2 years, I've started posting more fashion-related stuff as well as pictures of my daily outfits, stuff like that and garnered a bit of a following on livejournal (most are people from my own country, singapore).

I've also been designing and sewing to sew, and would love to start a proper blog to showcase my designs, as well as continuing to post the occasional fashion entry and daily outfit post.

But I'm hesitant to start up a blog on wordpress or blogspot because I'm afraid that my readers would not follow it if it's no longer on livejournal. Moreover, with so many fashion blogs out there now, I don't know if I have anything new to offer in terms of fashion-related posts.

Any suggestions on what I should do? It would be really appreciated.

Well, when I, as a non-LJer visited your site, first thing I saw was "friends only", which put me a bit off. I think that when you are a "normal" fashionista, the best chance you have (and the most interesting) is not pretending to be something else. It's two kinds of blogs I enjoy: The type from people within the industry, or commerical blogs such as The Moment or Style Files, the other is the personal blogs. These HAVE to have lots of personality, quirkyness and a general "i-don't-care"attitude. Personally, I'd much rather read a blog that is a hundred per cent personal of a person I'm interested in, than the typical "I'm blogging for my readers" (especially when the person has two readers). So, be yourself and write. The success of a blog relies (and all of this is just my personal opinion) on the motifs of the writer. If you had two readers, would you still write? And more importantly, would you be writing for yourself or them?

On the LJ to Blogger-issue, it's hard. Yes, you risk loosing some readers, and you risk gaining some new ones. It has to be up to you, what you feel most comfortable with.

i've been thinking about getting a fashion blog for quite some time now, but i just feel like everything i would write in it, someone has already written since there are soooo many fashion blogs out there. how do you make it stand out? promoting is probably the hardest part, who would want to read my/your blog when there are so many other blogs out there?

Hmm I guess the reason why I had put the friends only thing is because I don't really think that people would be interested in reading posts on personal issues, so only those who request to be added as a friend would be able to see them. Then again, my friends only posts are like 1% out of whatever I've posted so far.

Ultimately I would still be writing for myself I suppose. It's probably the only way I can ever get to express anything fashion related.

Thanks for your advice, I will have to consider the pros and cons of shifting to another blogging platform more. :)

Hey, just joined FashionSpot, been blogging for about 2 months, generally chat about digital fashion media/pr.

Link is: http://www.petitebourgeoisie.com

Feel free to let me know what you think! I work as a designer, and sometimes spend so long getting the look right the site isn't as usable as I like, so I kept this one pretty simple.

And if anyone needs a hand with blog design/HTML/CSS/Wordpress give me a shout. Happy to help.

When you don't post personal fashion related photos (e.g. pics of your outfit etc.) you really need a special and interesting style of writing.
I personally don't need another blog that informs me about the newest fashion trends because there are so many out there like you said. The market is full and you won't gain many readers.

Try to be unique. I for myself like to read one's personal opinion about the things someone posts. For information in general most of the people visit style.com or tFS.
Just ask yourself what you would like to read.
Promoting isn't that hard when the content of your blog is right.
Be creative!

Those are absolute perfect advise which IMO are worthy the attention of anyone thinking about starting a blog.

I would sell advertising space, but as said, only if the ad is suitable for my blog. I would not advertise anything that has to do with p*rn, online dating etc.. the ad must be appealing for the readers, so that's good to keep in mind when you get offers: would my visitors be interested to visit that site?

I don't think it's any problem, at least of you put a standard disclaimer up with "all content belong to their respective owners blahblahblah, if you hold the copyright to any of the content posted here, and wish for it to be removed mail me at [email protected] and it will be taken down at once" etc.

thanks!!

I just want to make sure I understand completely..

Okay, a young girl starts a fashion blog. She posts images/scans of runway/fashion shoots and magazine articles. She has a disclaimer at the bottom of every post containing this kind of material, like the one above.

Will she get sued, or what is the likelihood of her getting sued?

And if she DID want to make money off her blog, but only with AdSense, would this be considered her making money off of material she didn't create?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

We have a disclaimer like the one above. God knows anyone can sue for anything and everything these days, just make sure you are giving credit where credit is due to cover your **** at a minimum! Also you can subscribe to a service like Wireimage fairly inexpensively and use their photos.

Will she get sued, or what is the likelihood of her getting sued?

The likelihood of her getting sued is 1 in 10 million. As long as she's yet another insignificant blogger she won't be sued. The day she has 1 million hits a day and have received world wide recognition is the day that companies will start poking sticks at her. Until then no company cares for her since she's not earning huge sums of money or has the potential to do so.B)

But what if she DID get big? She's basically screwed right, unless she uses her own images, and nothing but? lol

How do you make your blog wider I am using blog spot and my blog is so narrow you cant see the pictures properly please help you can click on my link to see what I mean it is driving me nuts

I think you just need to re-size your images so they're the correct width for the main area of your blog. :flower:

If she gets big then people will just ask her to take down images and she'll have to start buying images like any other publication.

I thought I'd post my blog for a critique (in my signature). I just started it not long ago and it's a mix of fashion, beauty and personal. I'm pretty on the fly with what I write about and I've found that it's a good start to a creative outlet so far. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I think it would be a pain in the butt having all these people teling you to take down images, but if youre big enough to do that than maybe it doesnt matter. From my own experience i have mostly personal pictures and im not big at all so i dont have that problem haha. It is indeed a creative outlet and kid of cathartic.
