Alexander McQueen: After Lee

It's seriously stupid to assume anyone of about the same reputation as McQueen would or should succeed as the creative director of his house, which would only set his or her own name as being less underneath that of McQueen's... after all, every designer has a sense of personal vanity and I would not expect anyone of remotely good reputation to step in Alexander McQueen's footsteps. They should indeed let the design team take over and continue working with the same contributors like Shaune Leane or Philipp Treacy to ensure this is heading in about the same direction as it went before. And maybe try to normalize the excitement factor between pre- and main collection, which to me often felt like coming from a completely different minds.

i don't understand why people want it to shut down when Lee himself wanted his brand to go on after his death?
or I am missing something?

ANd at the end of the day, emotions aside, fashion is a buisness and the whow must go on.

My first thought after reading the press release was NO. I just don't think the label can continue without him. Who would want to try and fill his shoes. It's going to be impossible. The whole thing is still too fresh to be talking about this and the Gucci Group just come off as rude/selfish/greedy etc.

So now, since it will continue, the bigger question is who will continue it ? This is where it could get very ugly . I'm honestly afraid .

I am as well...I'm imagining the kind of backlash that could happen. Like Frida post-Tom at Gucci. Or even Alessandra at Valentino, except 10 times worse, because McQueen was actually unique and groundbreaking.

God, I feel really sorry for whoever the new designer is (or design team?!), what a loaded gift.

Also from the Associated Press -

Robert Polet, chief of the Gucci Group subsidiary, said the collection McQueen was working on before his death will be shown at Paris fashion week next month.

What's rude, greedy and selfish about keeping the boat afloat if there's jobs involved that would otherwise be entirely missing?

There's no such luxury as to temporarily fold down the house and to eventually re-launch it... besides the fact that there's reportedly very little amount of profit made for anyone to have properly greedy ambitions.

Alexander McQueen fashion label to live on
Feb. 18, 2010, 4:26 AM EST

PARIS (AP) -- PPR SA says Alexander McQueen's namesake label will live on despite the tragic death of the designer.

CEO Francois-Henri Pinault made the announcement Thursday after paying homage to McQueen, who was found hanged in his wardrobe last week.

Pinault called McQueen a genius, a poet and a friend.

The designer rose to fame in the 1990s, and was known for his daring and edgy style and skillful tailoring. He is credited with helping to revive the once-moribund British fashion industry.

I know that McQueen said he wanted his legacy and house to continue but I doubt it was under these circumstances, but how are we to ever know. I'm sure that like everyone, he thought he would grow old and probably have time to groom a designer and let them into his thought process.

one little part of me is happy to hear they'll keep the label going... but it's a very small part. the orther part is just FRIGHTENED.

I think it's so insulting to McQueen to assume that there is anyone in the world who could possibly come close executing/furthering his unique vision. Mostly because he was so much more than just a designer; his shows have always been a world of their own, the atmosphere, the visuals, the story behind the clothes, and then of course the clothes themselves. I just think it's ridiculous to think for a second that any of the designers mentioned in this thread could possibly fill the shoes of someone as rare and uniquely talented as McQueen.

Same here, it's so hard for me to imagine anyone designing for McQueen  Personally, I don't find Theyskens as a good choice, he seems quite a romantic in his designs and Lee was.. well, Lee was just Lee and I just cannot find any proper successor.

I think they should go for the design team who already worked with him, why bring an outsider who has no idea about the particular way he probably worked?, mostly if there´s people who probably stodd with him for years.
Probably all the holograms and amazing shows will be gone for ever but if they can save other house values such as great tayloring, exeptional attention to detail and advance technology methods McQueen could pretty much be saved,

Most fashion houses with irreplaceable designers (Balenciaga, Dior, Saint Laurent) have been succesfully taken over, so who knows, Alexander wanted his house to live past his death, so let´s think poetically, maybe he was already training people, maybe he will choose it himself, we´ll see!

What a shame. I think Alexander McQueen will be the new Valentino/Ungaro.

let's hope that his art will continue in his style. I still don't think that there's somebody that could replece Alexander MxQueen.

Im happy and scared for McQueen's label, i know this show will be extravagent but Im interested in seeing the Spring Summer 2011 collection, Whose taking Creative Director and where are they taking US......i hope the designer is young and Barely famous.....this could be the next DIOR or YSL, or the next Valentino.......
