All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

So I have an interview with a really high-end fashion design house in New York in a couple of weeks. What I want to know is, would it appropriate to wear say, skinny jeans like the ones below to an interview? What if I were to pair them with a nice long-sleeved silk blouse with ruffles, and low-heeled, pointy-toed, tweed steve madden shoes?

Too casual?

Also, if I am applying as an intern, how proffessional should my portfolio be. Can it just be sketches and designs that I've done or does it have to be complete with flats. I'm going up aganist FIT, Pratt, and Parsons students, so I'm a just a tad bit nervous.

your outfit sounds good, where are you applying?
just dress business casual, in the sense that don't over dress and don't under dress.

Thanks

Is this only for US? :(

Im sure this has been asked a million times already, but explain to a dummy how exactly you get work experience at a magazine? :ermm:

it's in new york - 57th st. i believe - at the new hearst building.

how to get an internship...hm...i think if you read the archives here it wil help you. i'm not going to get into it too much (sorry!) but basically it requires some degree of luck, perseverance, poverty (most positions are unpaid), intelligence and connections. it helps if you're studying something related, like fashion, communications, english, art history (lol it's not related but a lot of art history and studio art grads interning these days), etc. maybe your school can help you with who to contact, etc. getting school credit is useful. so is interning in a non-summer semester - the competition is WAY less fierce. try to have journalism/related experience at your school paper, local magazines, etc. intern at a fashion design studio, pr company, etc.

there are lots of pathways into magazines, and it depends on your abilities and which dept of a mag you want to work in.

Hi all. I need some advice. I am interested in working in magazines and I currently received an offer to do an internship with a stylist. I am not that familiar with the stylist industry so I don't know how famous she is but I was wondering if I should go ahead and accept this internship or wait another month to find out how the magazine internships I applied to turn out. The internship with the stylist does sound very interesting but I'm just wondering how it will look on my resume and the value of the connections I could be making as opposed to working at a magazine. Thank you!

I would think it depends on you goals.

If you want to be an independent, freelance stylist ... as long as he/she's working enough gigs to keep you busy enought to get your hours you need, I'd say do that. It's not how famous a stylist is ... most work in total obscurity ... it's how much and the type of work they do.

You would not only learn a bit about how planning, pulling, bookkeeping and learn about what happens during a shoot, more importantly, you'd probably pick up what an aspiring stylist would need to focus on to build her own business. You would not be allowed to connect with the stylist's connections because he/she has worked long and hard to develop them and you are viewed as future competition. You could loose the gig if you started to network (pass out your number/email/cards) with her photographers, art directors, clients, etc. Of course, you'd still learn who and where the pressrooms and showrooms for various desingers, etc. are ... so you'd learn a lot ... but should not be making connections with people without specific permission.

But if your goal is to work for a magazine ... in any capacity ... then I'd say hold off for that, if you can and decide later. Of course ... you would run the risk of loosing the stylist internship and then not be offered any others ... so only you know how important the magazine gig would be.

I kind of agree with you. Yeah, you might get in trouble if you start networking, but chances are that you won't. Networking is still the best way to get a job. Just don't be too forward.

I'm not giving any ground on this one. Networking while assisting or interning with anyone who is a freelancer is an absolute no-no ... about the biggest blunder you could make!

Hey ... if I caught you doing it on my gigs, you'd not only be out the door, I"d see that others in the industry know that you are not trustworthy. And if you were interning with me ...i t would be reported to your instructor along with a failing grade.

Most of us know it's proper set ettiquette to not steal contacts or clients. And it is considered stealing. So whenever and intern or assistant tries to do that ... the person they tried to connect with or someone else who sees it will often tell the key stylist/artist/photographer what is going on. That sort of thing is so disliked by most of us that we do everything to nip it in the bud, whenever and wherever we see it.

Reputation is everything is this biz. ... and you must be trusted if want to work in this rather close knit business. I certainly wouldn't want to risk my reputation and future career by stepping on someone esle's toes, don't you think?
