All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

Hi people:
I've just graduated from high school and I've gotten an internship place at a local top fashion magazine through email. It's starting next wed but I am excited and very nervous at the same time.
I was told at the interview that I'd have to 'organize & neaten their stuff, participate in phootshoots, represent them at events, search for pictures...', is there anyone out there who has done anything like these and help me out? Like how is it like to assist a stylist and 'organize' their stuff? I really want to be more prepared before I step into the office!
One last random question, ignore this if you want: if unpaid interns were to ask for like a week long break (for urgent matters) out of two months, would it be alright?

- Organise and neaten: make sure the fashion closet is neat so that when editors/stylists/etc come in they can immediately see what they need, and also so you can easily find items to return to designers/PR.
- Participate in photoshoots: standing around making sure that everything is running smoothly, from doing errands (running off to buy something that's needed asap that they forgot to bring, like maybe white underwear, buying lunch, coffee, etc), make sure the rack of clothes is in order of looks, steam/iron clothes or the fabric parts of shoes/other accessories, etc
- Represent them at events: if they have an event they'll want you to help out, sort of like PR-ing, eg maybe helping out with the list at the front door, etc etc. That's what I'm assuming though, I haven't done this for a magazine, only at a PR agency.
- Search for pictures: sometimes you may be told to look for a particular sort of look from a season and show it to them, or you need to find a runway picture of a certain accessory/item of clothing/on a celebrity/etc etc

I can't really think of anything you can do to really prepare yourself except just to be on your toes and try to anticipate what they want before they say it, listen to their directions carefully, be diligent, etc. It's not rocket science :p you really have to make an effort to be a bad intern!

I think i's fine to ask for a week long break, I mean we are unpaid... but not too often an within reason of course!

Btw - does anyone here have a Lane Crawford Joyce Group contact? :flower: Or Barneys/Bergdorf (sorry I asked this one before, but thought I could reiterate).

I should call up to get a name shouldn't I :S :(

I want to work in the fashion industry (not for money just for fun so I do not need any thing specific :)) but I have no work experience at all...I know I need to do internships first but how do you work your way up from not so great internship to good internship? I need to build a resume to work at good places but I guess I am asking...where can I start?

I am applying to a bunch of internships for NYC fashion week. The thing is, my current major is English (because my goal has been to be a journalist or media critic), but I am moving back towards fashion (before Uni, I went to Parsons), and will probably apply for the one year FMM program at FIT next year. Should I include this "change of direction" on my cover letter/resume or will it actually work against me to disclose this? I want them to understand that I'm committed more to fashion than anything else, but my academic record makes me look more like a bookworm than a fashionista. Of course, I will also include my previous internships with two prominent fashion labels on my CV, so that should help. I don't know...this is all sort of on a whim, but I think I should take the risk. If I could play any role in fashion week at all, it would be incredible.

i got called for an internship interview at LVMH

unfortunately i said NO at first
(please shoot me)
but now im so confused
the hours are 1 p.m. til 7.30 pm for 6 days a week but i have most of my classes in the afternoon and i should quit my part time job too .on the other hand.. when do you get an opportunity like this??!ONCE in a lifetime maybe ;(
any advice??!

shirleebee-I am not the expert so I'd listen to what other people say too, but I would leave the details of your directional changing plans out of your resume. I'd just keep it brief and simple and concise as possible. My thoughts are that everyone is desperate for help during fashion week and they shouldn't care if you're a fashion major or nursing student, or a plumber. As long as you're responsible and will show up and work hard and be reliable and help make their fashion week successful. To be honest I don't think they'd care very much what your plans for the future are, they'd just be looking to hire good people quickly. I'd just put down what you do right now and what you've done in the past if it's relevant (those internships, the year @ Parsons would sound good). Also, people working in the fashion industry don't all have fashion-related degrees so I don't think it's important to talk about your plan to change majors or anything. English is super.

But then I am not the expert so if anyone else has better advice feel free to listen to them. And good luck! I wish I lived in NYC and could do that too. I hope you get something and have a great/busy time!:flower:

shoegal87- ooo! how exciting! Congrats! Do you have an offer already or did you just have an interview? I'm a little confused my your post too. SO you have afternoon classes and this internship runs through the afternoons... is it too late to change your class schedule? I dunno, that's tough and for me school takes a lot of time to work on projects outside of class so I don't know how you could do both. If you have to choose, look at the big picture and see which is more valuable to you in 2 years, in 10 years... etc. You can always apply for other internships another time but if this is the chance of a lifetime to you, maybe take it? you can always withdraw from this semester and take these classes next semester or in summer also, but then you might have fees to pay or financial aid or student insurance complications. I dunno. It's up to you but I don't see how you'll do both at the same time.

And sorry for giving unsolicited advice. Just trying to help you think about the options.:flower:

How does one get an intern with them? What are the requirements?

no it was just for an interview, but they were looking for 4 people:shock:and it was all paid.(and here, you never get paid to do internships!)
this was really a great opportunity but like you said there's NO WAY i could do both ;(
the higher education system in italy is different from the Us, i could only take these classes either now from jan to may, or next year same period, i could study by myself and try to pass the exams but those who attend classes have lots of privileges.
Oh well, im sure that there's no way i can get an intership like this next year that im going to have a lot of spare time:(

eurofashionjunki honestly i dont know. I got it thru my college website placement section. All i know is that they were looking for people studying public relations and advertising and that is what i do

eurofashionjunki- check out the internships section at lvmh.com! You can even apply online!

I do have another question though. Harper`s Bazaar is currently searching for a spring intern and the e-mail stated there is [email protected]. Does any of you guys happen to know if it`s Mr./ Ms./ Mrs. Conly? I don`t want to address my cover letter to "Ladies and gentlemen" if I already have the last name.

Thanks so much.

Oh, and BTW: Do you think I have any chance to be considered, applying from overseas?

C_24 have you tried looking at the masthead?

You might have a chance - say you can do a phone interview, or you can travel to NYC for the interview (only if you don't live far!!! ) Be open about it and show how you can work around it.

I'll reply to the rest of this thread later on tonight:)

Cicciolina, I did look at the masthead, but onfortunately nobody named Conly appeared.

Then I tried calling Hearst, Harper`s Bazaar and their HR, but all I got were some very frustrating voice answering systems.

Anyways, a phone interview is a good idea. I live in Europe, so I couldn`t fly in for only one interview, but the time shift is only 6 hours to NYC...

Btw for the phone interview offer to call. I know it's annoying because their phone bills are paid by the company, but they're a lot happier for you to call - trust me on this one :p unless they offer of course, which means they're VERY VERY nice.

It also means you need to make your cover letter and resume pop so they are willing to put the extra effort to keep in contact with you.

Def agree on that one...even though it sucks knowing ur making a phone call u have to pay for that they can have for free, def offer to call.

By the way has anyone here interned at Chanel or Gucci?
Just curious, I haven't really heard about anyone interning at these places. If so, I would love to hear how it is and also who to get in touch with for an internship there...I have searched everywhere for contacts and no luck..TIA
