All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

Could anyone tell me what does an intern actually do while working for an event planning company? Especially when that company has no "formal" intern. pm if possible.

A girl doing unpaid work exp. in the events department where I work has to do all the jobs like filling goodie bags, making sure the bar staff turn up and don't take too many breaks, checking people are on the guestlist etc etc.

Oh my GOD! I have huge, nerve-wracking but exciting news! ZAC POSEN WANTS AN INTERVIEW WITH ME TODAY!!! But the thing is, I already have an interview with Catherine Malandrino at 4pm. What should I do?! Should I schedule it before or after? What if they both want me? *dies* I'm so conflicted!

don't blow either of them off! I usually have the bad habit of being in a similar situation and canceling one interview because another one sounds more promising when it actually couldn't be more further from the truth. More chances, more opportunities! Good luck on both and with whatever you decide :flower:

Should I schedule with Zac Posen after the Malandrino interview? Do they usually hire you on the spot or tell you later? When I've done this type of thing before, it wasn't really through a formal interview, so I'm a bit of a novice at this stage of the process. I'm afraid Malandrino might want me, and then I won't know what to tell them! (If I go to ZP directly afterwards!)

Ohhh, I hate writing CV's. Anyone want to start a round-robin of sharing what their CV's looked like?

Pringle just asked for mine and the whole rewriting it is a pain.

Just to get back to the dreaded 'what to wear to the interview' question:
Here's my situation- My 'go-to' interview outfit is usually: a crisp blouse with a pretty (but still classic) cardigan with a skirt.

I feel I look quite professional, but most importantly- I don't feel like I'm playing dress-up in my mother's clothing. I don't know if any other 20 year-olds feel this way, but I feel very strange and uncomfortable wearing trousers and dress pants. It might also have to do with the fact that I'm quite short (5'2) and I usually wear slim or skinny pants in my everyday wear, feeling that anything wider makes me look frumpy.

So anyway, usually I wouldn't have a problem figuring out what to wear- but my interview is this weekend in Toronto, where it is freeeezing!

Does anybody have any experience with cold-weather interview wear... would it be strange to still be wearing a skirt in that cold?
Please, please share your winter-interview outfits, or what you've seen other people wear- and any ideas that DON'T involve dress pants- lay them on me!

To follow up, the Malandrino interview went well, but they were looking for someone more interested in the SALES department, and thought I'd be better placed in PR. She seemed ready to hire me, though - even giving me my hours (and yes, it would involve being able to take part in the Bryant Park proceedings!), but then she said "I'll be in touch with you later to let you know for sure." So I left thinking I fared pretty well, but now...no call. :( However, in retrospect, I realize I spoke a little too specifically of my writing background, which sadly, doesn't have a whole lot to do with what this dept. does. I should have emphasized my sales associate and displays coordinator experiences, etc., but it all passes by so quickly (and you don't want to simply read back your resume) that you realize that the interview is over and you may not have said everything you wanted. Oh well. At Posen tomorrow, I'm going to try to play down the writing background and interest without hiding it entirely - I have to demonstrate that I can handle ANY department they choose to place me in. I also need to strengthen my Excel skills from "solid" to "superior".:innocent:

Cold interview wear! Well.

I have my standard interview outfit which is a Miu Miu skirt with a Chloe shirt and a blazer (from, like, topshop, ha!). When it's cold, I typically pair with really thick, but luxurious tights in black and wear ankle boots instead of heels. Tights is the best alternative and keep in mind while you might be freezing for a minute? You'll only be outside for the short walk to and from the car (when I was in New York I always took a cab so I didn't get lost!), so! Tights, that's my suggestion!

I am pretty thrilled. While I have experience in one part of the field, I really want to move into PR and I do have one internship lined up, but I'm not too fond of it, so I went about emailing a couple other houses and one got back to me within six hours (!), greeted me by my first name, and requested my CV as soon as I had a moment to send it. Think I made a good impression with my email? She even signed it with her first name only! So excited cos it's for a house I LOVE.

I'm in my second semester of freshman year at Parsons, do you think I'd be able to get any good internships? Or should I just wait until next year when I have more experience in fashion design? I'm interested in working at a super small start up company, companies with ethical slants (Loomstate, People Tree...) or maybe a magazine

Start emailing those companies now, J. You ought to be able to get some good internships and the more you have through your career as a student? The better when you graduate. You'll have more experience and as you advance through school, you'll be able to land bigger and better internships so during your final year you have a better chance of landing a real, true, ACTUAL job! Ha!

Talk to your adviser and let him/her know you really want to look for an internship. In the meanwhile, email the companies you're interested in and explain who you are (I'm so and so, I go to Parsons, studying this, and would like an internship with you because of this - of course, make it sound snazzy) and inquire about their internship programmes. If they like your email they will respond asking for your CV. Once I land my internship, I'll post my CV, but for now, I'm too competitive!!

Thank you.

Shirlebee, I'm not exact on how you prioritized the two opportunities, but I would personally have Zac Posen at the top of my list. Keeping this in mind, it's not entirely bad that you didn't fair well at Malandrino (even though you should wait a few more days to know for sure) because now you have the practice down and you know exactly what not to say. At least that's how I always think of it.^_^

I really hope this hasn't been asked before...

I really want to do work experience at some kind of magazine, but when reading the requirements, even for a weeks placement, they want you to be in some kind of schooling - ie. either highschool or university. Basically you have to be a student.

I'm not... well, I have been accepted into a Uni but I have deferred until 2009 for various reasons, so does that count? Am I still 'a student' or not?

Any ideas or anything?
Thanks lovelies xxx

Okay it seems the problem is not 'student' related but insurance related, highschool and uni will pay or help you figure out insurance, and thats why they take them instead.
Are there any ways of getting work experience without insurance or without being a student?

Hey,

Im looking for an intership in Antwerp for the summer. can you help me? Im a london based designer so I have a lot of contacts here is you need them. What kind of internship on offer?

Does anyone know how good/bad trying to get internships in the fashion industry is in Chicago? I would be looking for one for late this year/next year, or during this summer/next summer, for either a magazine or boutique or anything that would allow me to see another side of the fashion industry.
