Because they don't want a Balenciaga jacket paired with Baby Phat jeans or a Gucci skirt or Lanvin shoes. They want to control the editorial and the styling and they don't want their clothes to end up in any compromising positions.
exactly, it's all about brand image

What do u mean their advertising is unpaid? I really dont understand...

I think she means that becuase magazines will be featuring full looks from the runway, that will be like their advertising.

Exactly so ;)

An editorial is supposed to provide editorial perspective, right ... and be clearly distinguishable from advertising?

Balenciaga requiring publications to reproduce runway looks makes it difficult for publications to visually editorialize ... I suppose they could have the model roll her eyes ... ;)

This really seems short-sighted to me ... it looks very stiff on the runway, and surely I'm not the only one who doesn't want to look like a designer's paperdoll. A proper editorial could potentially show me how Balenciaga could work for me, which I certainly can't see from the runway.

^ I agree, I dont think anyone wears balenciaga head to toe and it's really nice to see how the pieces can be worked into more werable outfits...

I agree too, but shouldnt the people at Balenciaga know this? What is their purpoes for the madness? Just when things are starting to get profitable they want to screw it up! FIRE THEM ALL!

You have to hope that the hideous bell-shaped (shapeless) items will not become a trend! Could anything be more unflattering (even Boho style)?

I agree...I also wonder how Vogue and the other major fashion magazines are gonna take this. Will they conform? Or will they not show Balenciaga what-so-ever? Ill wait and see...

I understand why Balenciaga is doing this. They might be in the black but they still need to firmly establish an idenity. Women have an idea of what Balenciaga is but a firm imprint is better for sales. If you noticed S/S 06 was often shown as a complete look from the runway as well and I think it worked.

Personally I like it when stylists mix it up because it sheds more light on the clothes. Often I will hate a collection but learn to love it after seeing it cleverly styled in an editorial

The Balenciaga people are super snobs. Especially Pierre Rougier and the girls at PR Consulting who handle the brand's American press. Their Paris press is slightly less nightmarish to deal with but sometimes you get the feeling they are being difficult just for the sake of being difficult.

I agree with what your saying. Sometimes I don't like collections until someone that knows what their doing puts it with other things.

^No, no madness. Just a general lack of, and disdain for, courteous behavior.

LOL if its a big problem why doesnt PPR-Gucci put an end to it? Metal it seems like you have ran into these people on a personal level! haha
