Bare Midriff S/S 09

I'm not looking forward to this trend tbh. It can be tastefully done (i.g Jane of Seas of Shoes), but in most cases, it just looks trashy.

Egad, tight slashed skinnys and crop tops this coming Summer - I can see it now :yuk:

I agree. 99% of the time (Jane being the exception because she is always fabulous) this trend looks tacky. It's not unflattering on size 0 models, but I think it's very Britney Spears-circa-2002 made into high fashion. And that's not a good thing. I found the below picture on shopbop in their trends section. It terrifies me.

Oh that last photo is terrible! Besides the fact the model's listless face is so distracting, I really can't deal with that look.

I'm a very hit-and-miss for the bare midriff. I love it at times, but the only thing that bothers me is that in an everyday situation it's so painfully selective in crowd.

horrendous. there's just so much going on w/ that outfit...

I know. And I feel like this trend could so easily turn into that. Apparently, shopbop already thinks that's the trend and that greatly disturbs me.

What next? Shell suits?

I'm tentatively going to announce that I actually bought a crop top from Topshop the other day, and I have worn it (picture to follow, it's late, I'm tired and photobucket is having a tantrum) but not with a bare midriff. I wore it with a clashing pattern tank underneath and was actually quite partial.

I'm not happy with the whole bare midriff thing simply because you have to have an absolutely amazing stomach to pull it off. I had a baby eight months ago, and although I'm still only a size 10-12UK, I don't like seeing my stomach in the mirror - there's no way I'd inflict that on anyone else. Muffin tops ahoy.

Shopbop? What a crime. High heels, a barely there top, barely there shorts, a visible belly button, and way too many accessories. I don't know anyone who would look at that and be like "yea, that's what I want to look like." It's very hooker, in my opinion.

That's exactly what I thought!

I'm starting to have second thoughts about high-waist bottoms + bare midriff. I've seen a vintage or pin-up kind of look with a pair of high-waist pants and a cropped top. Being too much a '90s person, I had some dislike for high waist plus this styling exercise we're discussing in this thread. But I think with the right kind of bottoms and the right kind of top, this look can actually work pretty well.

With the heat we're dealing with here in Texas (hotter than usual this time of year), having something like this can actually be a bit practical. This is why [gridiron] football players wear cropped tops during practice- to stay cool on warm days. This bare midriff look may not be likeable as a style exercise for most people, but this could help cool yourself off on warm days.

Has anyone else noticed how ahead of the curve Carrie Bradshaw was with the bare midriff? haha.
