Black Models At The 2009 Shows

The VI issue will totally change the career of one girl and my bet is on Jourdan.

Her look is easily adaptable and not too intimidating & foreign.
The all black issue will certainly not shape the the view of an entire industry, to expect that is actually a little bit naive.

We will probably see Jourdan everywhere next season and that's how far it's probably going to get. Which is better than not seeing a black model in most shows at all.

Sessilee's harshness will work for a very few clients.
I just don't think she looks good on the runway.

I don't see Arlenis doing really well outside of NYC.
She doesn't seem to be runway ready.
And I can't discuss the issues I have with her look here

Yes Ju-Ju bean will be catipulted into the higher eschalons of Stardom. She is Versatile with very great womanly features (I think thats where fashion is going next) and does her job to the best of her abilities.

Sessi...I love her to death and I see a resurgance but thats it. I think her look is so unique that it might not work for everyone. I see a semi-good season ahead....her runway pout really bugs me. I dont see much versatility in her....Can you picture her in an erin fetherston show????? I can picture her in strong harsh clothes ala Givenchy, Gaultier etc! Milk that VI cover girl!!!!

Chanel...I dunno about this one, its like she is very hit and miss. Im crossing my fingers for her, but at this point in time she should have BEEN doing a lot more major designers and allot more edits. I dunno hopefully she will still be relevant next season...Please dont leave me Chanel:cry:

I really dislkie when black models are pitted aginst each other to see who is the best.
and its not even like they have similar looks . I dont get it?

Frankly I refuse to believe there is/shsould be just *1 special black model that we see everyshere*.
Therefore elevate her above others.

Jourdan is my girl but she has been looking very weak these days and lacks presence.

Please lets not turn this into the *who is the best thread* or X model Vs Y model.
:flower:

I dont think like that, Im just giving my predictions on what I think will happen. And have u seen Ju @ Gaultier....if that is not presence than I do not know what is. Although she did not move me at Givenchy! The color washed her out!

It does come accross as *who is the best* ala Naomi V Tyra.

It would be good if we could step away from this mentality.

:huh:Ummmmmmm its not. I am an avid fan of Jourdan and Chanel. If you go back into the Jourdan thread I even had an arguement with someone who was trying(or at least it seemed like it) to pit Chanel against Jourdan. This was before the FW 08 season rolled around. I champion all the black girls. I do not even like them sometimes, but since I am a sucker for underdogs (always have been) I always feel the need to support them, even if it is just by posting in their thread! Do not try to missinterpret my post. It is what it is...no shade! Just what I think will happen!

Well, we can refuse to believe it all we want

The fact remains that there is only room for ONE black model in this industry at a time, only one will be given the chance to truly shine.

Things are looking up for Jourdan now.

We are not the ones that are pitting black models against each other
It's simply the way the industry works.
They certainly do NOT look alike but they do in the eyes of casting directors and designers.

Thanks simply, I wanted to say it...but I did not want create an argument!!! It is what it is!!!! As much as we would love to change it, I simply do not see it changing anytime soon!

JESUS! Yasmin looks absolutely STUNNING! She is sooooo striking @ Elie Saab :woot:
the girl @ Stephanie Rolland looks a bit shot.. The girl Aminita is sooooo beautiful. She has very strong features, yet manages to look very soft :crush:

NO BLACK MODELS IN PARIS FASHION WEEK: John Paul Gaultier rep says 'the agencies have none.'

July 1, 2008

As the fashion world turns its attention to Paris this week, the severe lack of black models on the runway has again become a frustration among top designers.

"I asked the modeling agency for black girls for our next show but there simply aren't any," said Mario Lefranc, half of the Lefranc-Ferrant designer duo, one of about 40 labels presenting couture collections in Paris for Fashion Week – held through Thursday.

"I'm sick of blonde Russian girls," he told AFP. "Clearly the trend now is all for blue-eyed blondes."

According to AFP, fans attending couture shows for Fashion Week "will be treated yet again to a 'white-out' on the catwalks." With the death of French designer Yves Saint Laurent – one of the few who insisted on models of every hue – it appears the issue will only get worse.

Jean-Paul Gaultier, another designer known for using models of all ages, sizes, and origins, is also frustrated by the lack of available black faces. A rep for the designer told AFP: "It's really very difficult at the moment. There are no black models on the market, the agencies have none."

In the last few years, she added, "there's been an invasion of girls from Eastern Europe, of their type of beauty."

As previously reported, Italian Vogue's July issue will deal with the problem by featuring black models only. According to AFP, presidential candidate Barack Obama's popularity in France and around the world prompted Italian Vogue editor Franca Sozzani to make the statement against discrimination in the forthcoming issue.

:shock::huh:

^

One can only shrug.
The excuses are quite hilarious. While I cannot accuse JPG of anything, most designers and editors simply do not want to use black models so they blame the agencies.

Umm, maybe they need some of us to direct them to the heaps of ignored models we know off, but then again, none will ever be "good" enough

^Actually, it's no excuse...take a look at the boards. Women Paris has not one black model on eithe their main or development board. Viva only has Chanel Iman - who was in his show - and Liya Kebede - who is understandably not doing couture week. IMG Paris has several signed though...Alek, Honorine, Jaunel, Mimi and Naomi. Also at Development there are several. But in general, the Paris agencies have extremely few models of color signed.

Clients can always cross book from agencies in Milan and NY.
They can request the models that fit their asthetic and fly them over for castings/fittings.

The only criticism the agencies might be accused of is that they tend to have commericial looking black models, but you really cannot blame them when there is simply no demand for black models on the high fashion market.

Maybe the clients that are "complaining" need to use the very few that are readily available in order to prompt the agencies to find more models to develop.

I think black models who go to top agencies get rejected from the onset. Funny I see Sessilee in Paris now doing some shows, but who knows next season. I think black agents should create their own agencies, and corner the market because that is the only way to represent. Black US models are mostly assigned to work Essence magazine, and Ebony Fashion Fair, in Europe it's probably even less work.

That's really not how it works for a fashion week as exclusive and short as couture...and no oversees agency would fly over one model because Gaultier is considering her for his couture show. The costs would be immense...Couture doesn't work with showcards like the regular fashion weeks do and doesn't revolve about presenting new girls to clients. The girls that do couture are girls they have worked with before, making the designers feel comfortable with them. The only girl flown in especially for one show is Lakshmi for Givenchy this season...So basically what it comes down to for couture is that the main clients won't simply book any girl that is readibly available. It's about knowing for sure that a girl will work a dress and sell it rightly to the press and clients. You can't take that risk with a new girl that happens to be readibly available. Perhaps after S/S 09 rtw, couture will see more color.

yeah, i've heard that when some models of African descent go into agencies, they are often told "oh, we already have a girl that looks like you." Never mind flocks of Eastern European girls booking work just fine with many girls that "look like them" -_-! it's really sad. i even know of a model who was told point blank from an agency that they only want skinny blondes ( and the representative that told her this was also afro- descent.) ironically, this was an agency that reps one of the few African american models who is actually able to book work despite these circumstances!
