can you do high fashion if you're not slim/slender?

thanks fashionista-ta :flower:

I don't think "pulling it off" has much to do with what things look like on the runway.

A model's job is not to look good--it's to make the clothes look good.

So, by necessity, on the runway, the model is relatively absent, compared to the clothes. She's basically an animated hanger.

The rest of us dress ourselves for a host of other reasons--to invoke a mood, fulfill an inspiration, express our personalities, look attractive, whatever.
Most people don't wear clothes for the sake of showing them off.....
And they certainly don't want to disappear into their clothes (i.e., display the clothes at the expense of themselves)

Pulling it off has a lot more to do with comfort and confidence. And that comes from knowing your body and knowing what you want to say with the way you dress.

but no one can "pull off" a straight-off-the -runway, duplicate look (including models!)....because there is nothing there to pull off.

so so true :flower:

who wants to wear anything right off the runway anyway? that's not personal style, that's someone elses vision. i think personal style is creating your own style, deciding and knowing what looks best on you and wearing it well.

Exactly! I think if a person wears a complete look from the runway, it's because they have more money than they do confidence in their own taste. it's like, "I don't really know much about fashion, but this famous designer put this outfit together, so noone can criticize it"

I've seen celebrities do that, and they just look insecure and victim-y

Great discussion! After having just read thru several of the new threads regarding S/S 07 and looking at the length (short) this thread has renewed my confidence in 'interpreting' trends as opposed to following them. Esp as I DONT have the legs for short lengths.

Thanks for all the interesting posts.

i think you can pull off anything if it fits. but i think that one thing what curvy girl can't pull of is skinny jeans they make you look even more curvier.sometimes even fat when you take it reallyreallyreally wrong.wrong is like very thight cut and shiny material.

^ I think it depends on how curvy/how skinny you are talking, but if both to a reasonable degree, it can def be done ^_^

i agree. now that skinny jeans are en vogue, I see everybody wearing them and some of them would look much better in "oldfashioned" bootcut jeans.

I don't particularly think so, unless one cares to look like a baffoon.

I think it depends on the person and the particular outfit what looks good. Being skinny isn't a free ticket to Hotville where you always look good in everything, either.... there are of course things thin people AND bigger people look bad in. So I really think it is situational. I mean there are a few things that as a rule larger sized people shouldn't wear (eg. skinny jeans, floral prints, oversized baggy things... things like that), but still. It just depends.

On the other hand...

Hopefully this will upload correctly:

Jen Hunter (size UK12) and Marianna Berglund (no size given) -- they were on a UK version of "Next Top Model".

I think the size 12 girl looks much better in that thing- but I think that looking good in a bathing suit and being able to pull of high fashion are two very different (and often incompatible) things

Marianne is a little too thin but looks better than Jen.

Jen looks better in it b/c the metallic is more suited for smoother bodies. On the skinny one it highlights her bones which isnt a good look.

I am conflicted about this. Part of me would like to say, sure any size person should be able to pull off high fashion. However, I agree with Spooky Girl and think in general, clothes look better on people who are at a healthy weight and are fit. Sometimes a designer concentrates wholly on the dress as art - and then, the model really is only there to display the dress- so she needs to fit the designers criteria - like Laika said, she is there to make the dress look good. But all clothes do not work well on all people, even if you are thin. Each person needs to find the designer and clothes that work well for their body type.
