I apologize ahead of time if this is not in the right section :flower: (Perhaps it really belongs in the Consequences of Affordable Collections thread?)

From AP/Reuters:

Champs Elysees too posh for H&M
December 12th, 2006
PARIS (AFP) - Sweden's fashion giant H&M has been barred from setting up shop on Paris's Champs Elysees, city hall said, after a report warned of an invasion of high-street retailers along the famed avenue.

Regional planning officials voted overwhelmingly against H&M's plans for a Champs Elysees superstore, designed by the star French architect Jean Nouvel and set to open in 2008, after city officials came out against it.
The decision follows a recent report carried out for Paris city hall, which raised the alarm over the growing number of chain stores and fast food outlets that rub shoulders with luxury brands on the avenue.

"Can we risk it turning into another Oxford Street?" the report asks, referring to central's London's main shopping avenue.

A deputy to Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe insisted on Monday that the city "has nothing against H&M" and that the decision was intended to preserve a "mix of culture, restaurants and shopping."

"Clothing stores already account for 39 percent of all traders on the Champs Elysees. We want the cinemas and restaurants to stay," said Lyne Cohen-Solal.

Paris city hall is working with the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a committee of Champs Elysees traders to draw up a commercial development plan for the avenue by mid-2007.

Unless firm action is taken, they argue, global chain stores will take over the avenue, since they are the only ones able to afford the skyrocketing rents.

But the planning verdict got a lukewarm reception from the Champs Elysees traders' group.

"This was more than just another shop," said a spokesman, Dominique Rodet. "It was a concept store -- H&M had promised to do something really different."

According to Le Parisien newspaper, H&M is likely to appeal the decision before France's national business planning office.
This is a rather interesting dilemma. Public elitism or really just a push for preservation? Everyone has hidden agendas these days...

People only know the famous European labels. An american designer, Charles Kleibacker, did all of his production in house because it was too complex to be done at facotories. He draped every size on the mannequin (no grading) and cut just about everything from collars to sleeves on the bias.

this is beautiful, and for me personally it is a pleasure to work in this manner, as some of the most truly brilliant ideas never come during the sketching process, they come while working on the maneqquin, the come while draping fabric, or working out a technique for constructing a collar, pocket, sleeves etc.
a large part of the problem though is all the other stuff , eg. i once interviewed with a showroom who was reluctant to represent the line when they found out that i did all the patterns and samples myself. (they claim they were unsure if i would be able to remain consistent with the prduction)

Another example of a designer Akin to the one you mentioned is Mr. Eric Gaskins, who makes some of the most beautiful clothes (quality wise) i have ever seen

Very good, as his work has always been quality over quantity, and probably one of the most uncompromising in this regard. thats why he never (except for knitwear) expanded his business beyond his atelier- directly surpervised by himself..............
a kind of business i am trying to have............... and one of the reasons he is in a three way tie (with just a nose beyond the other two , Balenciaga and Richard Tyler namely) for my all time favorite designer.....................

it might be off topic, but does Alaia make a profit? from clothes or accessories including leather goods?
he seems to keep production low, and so the cost might be quite high...

This is a good news for me
I'm soo bored b/c of all those cheap stores (C&A, Mac Donalds) in the most beautiful streets in the world.
Who's next? Wal-mart on the Avenue Montaigne?

(what is surprising though is that although the Champs Elisées is probably the most expensive area in the world, it has nothing really "chic", all the posh and excluive shops and hotels are located on the Av George V, Av Montaigne and rue François 1er.)

good news for me too! even if it was set to be H&M higher priced concept store it still would have marred the avenue.

I like this news a lot! I'm glad Paris is this way and doesn't allow these huge corporations to just walk all over them. In this day and age, some one needs to stamp their foot down and just say 'no'!

Oh, and I love H&M, I just love the beauty of the Champs Elysees more.

champs sucks..id rather have H&M than the crappy stores they already have like naf naf and other crap...ew..H&M would be much better..and plus, champs elysees stopped being a posh ave for a while..mccdonalds,quick, planet hollywood for gods sake? i hate it there

Champs Elysées are posh because of the prices. honestly having an appt. overthere or renting a place for shops is really expensive
anyway, instead of another H&M (there're sooo many! it's enough! one @ Les Halles and one @ Rivoli...i.e : walking 3min.!)......open....stop changing the Champs Elysées!

I sorta agree, they should keep that area of such prestige for the prestigious people that wont set foot at a wal mart.

^lol I don't think that's what they're trying to do.
I see exactly what they mean in reference to Oxford street. I hate going down there now it's crammed full of people who are there for shopping. That's why I prefer Regents Street and places like Kings Road despite there not being as wide a range of shops as on Oxford. Les Champs Elysee are beautiful and unique because of the lack of huge chain shops and H&M is everywhere anyway. Our lives are ruled by commercial giants trying to get us to spend money when we should be enjoying the atmosphere and beauty of being on one of the most famous streets in Paris!! I doubt the general public mind it not opening there. I know I don't!

I see no problem with it...the French are weird...blah

banning SUV's and etc...I hope I didn't offend anyone

I'm French :P

(half French)

...Like the idea. Love H&M but Im sure there is enough of them in France to not need another on Champ Elysees. I dont want Champ Elysees to change

I really don't get it I'm sorry..They have Morgan and all these other high-street stores who to be honest are nothing against H&M..but ban H&M one of the most successful high-street stores in the world!? Uhmm yeah right. I really don't see the difference if a new restaurant opens or an H&M store. Sorry but it sounds really weird to me..Why would you ban one of the most successful high-street retailer from opening a store one of the most famous streets in the world?..

The Champs Elysees is soo common! They have a Virgin records for godsake...

Please, they just have nothing better to do...

You took the words right out of my mouth. Plus, there's like a Hippo on every corner. I never shop on the Champs Elysees, too many tourist, too many pickpockets, and too much crap. I prefer shopping in the 6, 7, 1 and 18.

Champs Elysees already is like Oxford Street, they waited too long to avoid that comparison....

If I remember correctly, isn't there a GAP also on the Champs Elysees..........?

the Champs already has worse than H&M
Quick Fast Food (french equivalent but worse to Mc Donalds) which stinks for an entire block!!!
a Gallery with Cheap tourist shops including cheap made clothes etc..
and there is a Zara, a Gap, a Virgin, a Sephora and a Disney Store anyway..
i honestly prefer Oxford Street, at least it has an identity and i know what im going there for..
