Child-like Style

More from the Marc Jacobs Fall 2001 collection. . . :) I really like the cookie cut-out shapes on the dresses.

I remember making these for my mom and putting every little bead so delicately or else it would all fall over and be ruined. I still have the kit I think...

This article is fairly dated (May 2001, to be exact), but I'm fairly sure I've NEVER seen it posted.

Click the links to view the slideshows, and keep a lookout for Libby McInnis and Liz Goldwyn, both of whom I love in addition to the "crayon-bright" makeup looks...

Shiseido Raises Playing With Makeup to an Art

100000231.jpg

May 1, 2001 – Playing with your mother's makeup is definite fun, but the stuff of high art? Shiseido thinks so. In an ongoing effort to support emerging art and fashion in the United States (it sponsored Susan Cianciolo's Spring 2001 runway show and Bruce's Fall 2001 show, the Japanese-based cosmetics company recently unveiled artist Libby McInnis' Lipstick installation at its SoHo concept store (where you can try but not buy the products).

Created in the tradition of children's pop-up books, the moving sculpture depicts a young girl applying lipstick (the work was inspired by McInnis' 2-year-old niece). In keeping with the childlike spirit, Shiseido feted the artwork April 12th with a milk-and-cookies event. But this was no Oreo-dunking get-together. McInnis personally iced the hand-mirror-shaped cookies, which were served by models clad in Cianciolo's artisan designs and playfully made up by McInnis and Shiseido makeup artist Miyako Okamoto.

The crayon-bright look was more runway (à la Lacroix or Galliano) than everyday wearable, but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd. Gallery owner Aaron Rose noted that both the art and the party had a raw, exuberant quality, one that "really stands out in a neighborhood as slick as SoHo."

If you can't make it downtown before May 5th, when Lipstick comes down, look for it as part of the Whitney Museum's Play's the Thing exhibit starting May 25th.

I just discovered this thread and I'm delighted by it :)

One thing though... I'm usually a fan of cute stuff but it's more cute stuff like "it's so adorable, in a little-bit-off whimsical"-way.
A lot of the clothes are gorgeous, but I think that some translate childlike rather crudely (can't think of a better word, sorry). What I mean is that some of it reminds me of some Pampolina clothes, with bright, cutesy prints on would-be adult cuts instead of clothes that really are reminiscent of a little girl's clothes and end up looking rather tacky.

That's just my personal taste and humble opinion though ;)

Especially if that trend is going to hit big-time (and I think it might well) probably most clothes will be more bright plastic that the whimsical details at Marni (subtely and beautifully done IMO) which are two TOTALLY different types of childlike to me.

Also, I can imagine Marni's clothes on ladies of all ages but I think the bright patterns, plastic accessories and bows will looks ridiculous on anyone over thirty.

I like this when it's a bit more subtle, like #346 the second white blouse, to alter it so its without the collar; at least that's my preference

i wonder if this style still exists nowadays hm ?
has been a year+ since the last post.

that's adorable. I love vintage children's clothing. what's the date on the photo gius?

1912 i believe..based on another photo i have where they look the same age, and have similar hair

Oh I love this trend. I've always been very fond of "childlike" clothes. But it's not so much that the clothes look like something a child would wear, for me its in the details. I really love ruffles, and bows, and polka dots which tend to show up in a lot of children's clothing.
