(PARIS) Paulo Melim Andersson at Chloé: call it the three-collection curse.
Ralph Toledano, chairman and chief executive officer of Chloé, today announced the appointment of 38-year-old Hannah MacGibbon as the brand's creative director, effective immediately. MacGibbon, who will make her debut at Paris Fashion Week in October, has held the position of Chloé chief designer since Oct. 2006. In a season seemingly saturated with runway debuts and a shuffling of names--Valentino, Loewe, Ungaro, and Halston are just a few brands that come to mind--Melim Andersson joins a club that includes Patrick Robinson, the former Paco Rabanne designer, and Peter Dundas at Ungaro, both of whom showed three seasons before calling it quits.
"Paulo is a truly talented designer and we would like to thank him for his contribution to the house," Toledano said in a statement. "I am totally confident that he will have a very successful career." The 35-year-old Swede, who replaced Phoebe Philo after she resigned in January 2005, joined Chloé in Oct. 2005 from Marni, where he served as design director. His first collection, shown in Paris in March 2007, received mixed reviews, as have his two subsequent runway shows. The biggest gripe was that Melim Andersson seemed unable to capture the heart of what is Chloé's French soul.
A five-year veteran of the famed French house, MacGibbon worked at Chloé from 2001 to 2006. Philo hired her after announcing plans to travel and work in between studios in Paris and London, the latter of which she called home. To support her move, she brought in two Englishwomen, MacGibbon and Blue Farrier, both Central Saint Martins graduates. A key member of the design team, MacGibbon was instrumental in generating the hip femininity that made the brand a worldwide success and catapulted it into the big leagues. Most recently, MacGibbon consulted for the brand as creative director for the development and launch of the new Chloé fragrance. Prior to joining Chloé, she was the assistant director to Valentino Garavani in Rome.
"Hannah has been an integral part of our company for many years and we look forward to the overall creative vision she will bring to the growing world of Chloé," Toledano commented.
