I'm a fan of corsets, don't really wear them today, own 7 of them but only one that I can actually call a real corset (for tightlacing that is) but I don't wear them becuse I like to breathe  .
I've allways liked looking at images of women wearing corsets, especially old ones, from 1800 to 1950, I adore vintage  . I'm not a fan of the corset fashion today, it seems fake to me, untastefull and "dirty". I've been browsing some websites and looking at recent images and most of the types are women, who practice tightlacing when no one sees and take a lot of pictures of themselves in their beadroom wearing their corsets and their underwear or nothing at all. to me, desperate atentionseekers. I've seen some ok images though, nice waist lines and ok clothes... but the women look horrible, like well done burnouts... with too much red lipstick.

Anyway, I just wanted to share with you people some pictures I've found that I really like, both of corsets and people wearing them

They are wonderful, aren't they? :P I know that the only time I have ever felt completely dressed was when I wearing one. I personally think that modern clothing has lost a lot its strength of form without them...

I agree too, they can really complete the shape and form of an outfit, but I am not a fan of the modern versions. formalwear is a modern exception though - i.e. a westwood corseted ballgown (like the one below) is divine  I personally love them because they channel the shape of corsets from the baroque/rococo period...in fact, at vivienne westwood's V&A exhibit, a janet arnold (a revered costume historian) book, called patterns of fashion: 1660 to 1860, was displayed, open to the a page about 18th century corset pattern drafting. :woot: (btw a great book)

for wearing in the real world, a corset from the 50's/early 60's can make a vintage dress look 'right'. ^_^ thanks for posting!

You might want to check out the book Fetish Fashion: Undressing the Corset if you're looking for images of corsetry. It (obviously,) has fetishistic bend, but the book has some really gorgeous and costumey pictures. There are few pictures in the book that make me wince and wonder how people thought THAT was a good idea, and I'm REALLY into them. I did include lots of links in a post I made in the "gothic fashion" thread, too. If you want lots and lots of gory details, pm me.

Oh Betty Boop- what a great topic. :flower:

Just recently I have been digging through the 'net looking for some corset information.

The book that Enrichi recommended and The Corset: A Cultural History by Valerie Steele are both on my booklist for future reading.

The incredible Dita Von Teese who piqued my curiousity on corsets...

I agree with you, but I'd like to see more 50's dresses etc in modern day clothes  And the material used today is so thin, I think that the corsets would be too notable underneath, atleast the clothes that I buy.
I'm very fond of the 20's and 30's, even if the corsets then were used to hide feminin lines, just something so wonderful about that time.
I love the last picture on reply number 1, the black and white girl with the hat, she's just so adorable, the pose is awesome, so differant from modern day model pictures, her corset, her wrinkled stockings, the shoes are great and I own simular shoes :flower:
If I'd ever wear a corset again it would be to define my lines, nothing extream.

I know of a good corset book, just waiting for it to come back to the bookstore. It's about clothes in 16-1800 and there's a huge chapter about cosets B)

Here's one I forgot to post, I really like this one, the pose and the use of colors, I adore the style of old photographs. :flower:

I went to a HUGE science-fiction/fantasy convention last weekend and saw many girls in great costumes, including corsetry. Some highlights:

The little red buttons on her outfit were blinking lights! :bounce:

Without the flash you can see her lit up!

I loved the colors in her outfit.

Everyone I know who has seen this photo loves her outfit! I thought she looked so cute and very natural in her corset. Plus, I had never seen one in such a pretty fabric and with contrast trim like that.

And from the back. Even the lacing is pretty!

Tutu skirt, for Sasha, corset for Betty Boop!

I like that first one, the pink lacey stuff with the parasol. And I love the model. She is SO exquisitely pretty. She looks like Mae West, but with black hair.

Here are a few more, some BAD and some good

Anna Held, really beautiful!

Bad bad bad. (this was the only image of her wearing underwear with the corset! My idea of the bed room-atentionseeking-red lipstick-burnout)

:D Hi im new to this site and just wanted to thank you Betty Boop. I only found this page because i was looking for info on corsetry. The site is great and im glad i found it by mistake and Ive already told my friends about it as they're interested in fashion and design aswell. Anyway i wanted to say that when i was looking for info on corsetry so i typed in 'eighteenth century corsetry' on google and loads of great web pages came up. I don't know if you tried this already but if you have, look again. i mean, nobody can really get tired of looking at those beautiful garments can they? Well i can't anyway. I also found an interesting article in an April,1992 addition of Vogue. The acticle is 'a homage to Vivienne Westwood' and features some fantastic photos of gorgeous corset and petticoat inspired clothing. These are a great example of contemporary corsets that go right, although most i have to agree are either fashionably wrong or just pornagraphic. I think the only way to get a copy of that edition of Vogue is to buy a copy off the internet(Vogue). Before i go, i just have to say that the pictures you found are soooooooo beautiful. It almost makes me wish that i lived in the eighteenth century just so i could have worn a corset like theirs xxx:D :D :D
