Demna Gvasalia - Designer, Creative Director of Gucci

What happens if they go broke? Do they just sell the brands off like a collection of paintings? I'm too poor to understand.
they license the brand to middle easterns then claim that the licensees merch are fake when they get popular again. Or if they never get back to popularity, end up like john galliano or christian lacroix as the high-end offerings in cheap department stores. The mid-tier result is to end up like a contemporary brand like karl lagerfeld.

It would be weird to see Gucci becoming a derelict name.

It is not surprising when you read the history of the Italian clothing industry, in reality politics played a big role not design. The Italian fashion world always had an advantage over the French in terms of production capabilities, but it lacked the characteristic style that the French had. Before the Second World War, they tried to conquer the American market, which was the most important at that time. They failed - no one was interested in Italian fashion. After the war, the Italian aristocrat Giovanni Battista Giorgini realized that after the fashion week in Paris, American fashionistas spent their time on vacation in Tuscany. That's when he came up with the idea of organizing fashion shows in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Until the 70s, it was the capital of Italian fashion until Missoni accidentally caused a scandal because they did not realize that the fabric they used was transparent in a different light, and the models did not have underwear on. Conservative Florence was outraged and the entire fashion society moved to Milan, which was a much more cosmopolitan city. It was then that it was realized that if Italian fashion was 30% cheaper than French fashion, it had a chance of selling in America. Another important factor was the appearance of Armani and Versace, who created a characteristic aesthetic, i.e. comfortable clothes from timeless fabrics. As for politics, there is also a theory that American merchants specifically ordered goods so that wealthy Italians would have closer relations with the US and support parties that would want to belong to NATO and thus weaken the important and influential Italian communist party.

The thing about Frida's shows at least is that she strongly diversified her references and inspirations yet making it very Gucci. I did remember that I was actually CURIOUS what other world she was going to move us to. Fine, it was commercial, it wasn't McQueen m, but it was...something. it wasn't like even with Michele when I specifically knew what to expect and I was more or less right in terms of what I saw.

The camel collection from FW 2010, the YSL inspired looks from the SS 2011 show, the gem coloured Veruschka looks of FW 2011, the Art Deco world of SS 2012, the gothic FW 2012, the architectural SS 2013, the femme fatale of FW 2013,,, so much stuff. And it's rare I can count it all down!

Michele also had good collections. I actually preferred his SS looks of 2016 and 2017...the rest just starts to blend into the same mush!

can't believe i'm having to say this but bland and inoffensive doesn't kill a brand, it stabilises it. corporate mismanagement kills a brand, which is precisely what's happening to gucci - among several other horses in kering's stable - now.
frida was not fired because gucci was doing good at her hand.... the brand had image issues and became cheap and boring with her creative direction.
let alone the side issues of that time as well : like a sea of making products for the outlets that looked not much different from full price merch & lots more miss management - inside the company by the hands of her husband as well.

they treated the company like it was theirs with all the abuse of power & laziness that comes with it.

gucci's missmangent is nothing new its cursed literally since its family days

ancora´s bland and inoffensive did help gucci be few steps closer to its grave ...gucci never did well being middle off the road.

oh wow i had no idea this happened..!
im scared to think what will happen to Gucci during and after Demna's tenure.
Im more concerned about hundreds and thousands of employees that will be in risk of losing their jobs... not new for Gucci

I’m dead at the rewriting of Frida’s tenure on here. Shes the same as Sabato, just less boring

Demna will likely put on a great show and the merchandising is always great, just will it be able to connect to the Gucci universe which also includes fragrances etc.

Very poor planning with Gucci having to be limbo, it’s an unfortunate position they’re in until his next show.

exactly mediocre is the new wonderful ...the constant justification of its not that bad etc like people should go back to her interviews hear or read her cringe fest answers to everything as a start.

people forget as wel 90 % of the team under her was same team that did Alessandro Michele´s Gucci most base of designs its same just different fabrics and more over styling and vintage influences. some designers are still there with ancora and not to mention the same factory ateliers that are used to do things the same ways for last 15- 20 years.

i think someone like Demna will bring allot of change in actual cut and fabrication (even if the style of his gucci will work or not ), much like a Hedi or a Phoebe would also be other 2 designers that change a lot inside brands on a production and fabrication level of a company.

i think this is one plus point i can see with demna the hand of the ateliers will be influenced to make things in a different way with new /sharper proportions

post Tom´s Gucci hardware´s and cut of rtw and leather goods has been changed to this round chunky big cheap stylistic style that never went away with even ancora´s push to minimalism this clunky gucci is still everywhere.
(the sense of portions & weight of things that make products look well designed into the details)

I wonder if they will launch a new fragance under Demna´s tyranny tenure...I suggest "MEME" as a suitable name for it!

MEME by GUCCI...troll de parfum
