I have heard they have sample sales in NYC- it is murder to get in.

so... anybody knows where the burning takes place?! :innocent:

do they need help? i won't take anything i promise!

OMG...how weird but my colleague and I were just talking about this - a friend of her's who used to work at Chanel said that unsold stock, leftover from sales would be burnt yearly in some secret location in Spain. But granted, this person worked at Chanel 5 yrs ago so I'm not sure whether this is still the norm.

I think it's terrible too....just ridiculously wasteful.

is every June a

Here in Paris Hermes has sales of it's RTW and shoes every Jan and every June, they rent a separate venue for the occasion so that the store doesn't get sullied by the manic bargain hunting throngs....What goes on sale is the stuff from the previous year's collection - not the collection that has just been in the stores. For example, this June what was for sale was the summer 05 merchandise.

Burning and destroying their merchandise - just another reason to hate LV and all its ugly crap.. Is it me or are their collections getting more vulgar every season....:yuk:

oh my god!!! i have never heard of this, i mean i guess i did wonder where clothes went when no one bought them after presale and everything , but BURNING clothes , that is insanity... to think of all the people that need clothes , i'm just in shock

Kinda off topic...
A friend of mine who used to work for Selfridge said that the store cut off and destroyed off-seasons/unsold shoes.

I was really close to tears while reading this thread.....

GIMME GIMME GIMME A BAG, AFTER SEASON!

DON'T CARE IF IT'S TRENDY JUST AS LONG AS IT'S NEAT!

(try to sing it with Gimme Gimme Gimme by ABBA)

Are you serious?! WHOA This seems HIGHLY destructive in terms of economics.....It's really hard for me to believe this....but idk :ninja:

If the items are cannot be sold, then the design houses would need to place lineups and unsold inventory into storage which would create more of a loss; since not all of the merchandise can be placed without an affect to the image, much of it is probably rendered destroyed and compacted, then filed with the IRS as a loss.

Some of the designers do warehouse creations for their historical and legacy value, held in vaults for future donation to museums and private collections with a focus on maintenance and future presentation.

hmmm I suppose we could say this...to lower taxes...but it does seem like a waste: labor, marketing costs, all fees involved in making the product...but can companies write off items that they PURPOSELY damage? I could see a fire or w/e, but if they're voluntarily doing it, it counts?

Regarding left over fabric from fashion houses. In NYC, at least some of them make it available to clubs at FIT which raise funds by having grand sales of fabric for as little as $1 per yard. (Inside the school, so you'd be unlikely to know it was happening unless you studied there.)

Couture houses burn their leftover fabric. Louis Vuitton will also destroy remaining merchandise. This is done to help maintain an item's value.

i dont know what your sources are but that wouldnt make a lot of sence (specially couture hosues burning fabric...:flower:
fabrications can be kept in archives and used in the future as references, special occasions, etc. <-- i'm thinking of the dress ghesquiere did for the marie antoinette edit on september vogue... it said the belt was made with and ooooold old fabric (dont remember how old  )from the labels archives

i've read in a magazine (vogue?) that some of the things that are not sold are offered to people in magazines or in the company (vogue editors, chanel financial or shop assistants...)

yea I was thinking this too....the press gets A LOT of free stuff...shoes, clothes, etc

maybe if we wrote a letter to the companies, begging them..ahem..or convincing them.. that they should support future designers by giving the clothes to us. :D

true? it's such a pity...i understand that they want to save their image but for me will be a great thing if they snipped off labels and donated them away...insted of making hypocritical charity campaigns...but i know this is the world we live in...

That is one big KARMA coming your way. :flower:

cant believe that happens... there´s people starving and nude in the world!!!

i know that giorgio armani destroys all employee uniforms after they are returned.

as if the fashion industry or people who buy high fashion have a concience??!!

People could buy a 100 dollar dress from banana republic instead of the 3000 dollar one from prada and send the 2900 dollars saved to a charity- but they dont

I think its absurd to be on a fashion forum and feel surprised or upset about the inequalities of wealth in the world
