It comes down to knowing what types of clothing suit your figure, and what colors suit your complexion, and what clothing is appropriate for the occasion and location.

I always try go get designer shoes because they pull my outfits together better..I'm a teenage student, I don't have money for couture..but my H&M outfits look pretty good when I pair them with Chanel flats, or whatever. My mum's friends always ask me where I got my skirt/sweater/etc. . (these are ladies who wear Chloe and McQueen, mind you)..and I always pretend like I forgot..haha. Not letting them know my deep dark secret that is H&M.
