STYLE BISTRO: Dita Von Teese’s Beauty Routine Actually Takes Less Than Five Minutes
That’s not all the burlesque star divulged about her iconic style.
By Kristina Rodulfo on February 24, 2015

When Dita Von Teese walks in the room, you have to remind yourself that she lives in this current era and didn’t travel forward in time from the Golden Age of Hollywood. The pinup model, style icon and burlesque superstar performed recently at a celebration for the opening of W Beijing and we had a chance to chat with her before the act, which involved a huge birdcage and giant feather fans. Von Teese proved to be extremely down-to-earth and up for any questions (one other reporter even asked her about Fifty Shades of Grey, to which she responded, “That movie seems fetish-lite…and I know the real players out there.”). We decided to pick her brain about her glamorous fashion and beauty practices.

At a time when the au naturel look is trending and everyone is about convenience, why do you love taking time to doll up?
“I love to get dressed up but I actually don’t spend a lot of time on all of it. I choose certain signature things I like to have everyday: matte skin and red lips. On a normal day, I don’t wear anything else but that. It still looks very polished and like it takes time but it takes under five minutes.”

What do you do with your hair?
“I usually wear my hair in a chignon during the day, which takes no time, just a quick twist. But on a date night or an event night I get ready in about an hour. For full red carpet glamour, I take maybe an hour and a half when I add in all the texting and listening to music.”

My love of lingerie carved my entire career as a pinup model and burlesque star. ”

You’ve said you do your own styling and makeup. What is your routine like?
“I start clean, shower, have clean teeth and all those sorts of things. Then, perfume. I usually then set my hair [in curls] next so that it can cool while I’m doing my makeup. I go get dressed and last thing I do is brush out my hair for the final look.”
What do you wear when you’re having an “off” day?
“I usually just try to find something that works every time that makes me feel good. It depends on where I’m going to be. I have my favorite dresses. Whenever I’m packing, I’ll pick my favorite three things so I know I’m happy. Or, if I’m just staying home, I’ll put on a long dressing gown. I love at-home glamour: long robes and dressing gowns that are comfortable and make you feel good at the same time.”

Between your collaborations and your own lingerie line, you’re like an ambassador for pretty undergarments. Why do you care?
“I loved lingerie as a child. I had a feeling that it was like a right of passage of being a woman and I even worked in a lingerie store as a teenager. My love of lingerie carved my entire career as a pinup model and burlesque star. I feel like my desire of showing off lingerie—really fancy lingerie—is what got me into this, so I’ve come full circle having my own collection.”

What advice do you have for women trying to find the right lingerie?
“I think you need to be willing to try new things and also be understanding that right now is a great time where you have fit and function and beauty and glamour all in one. It’s not like you have to choose your sexy lingerie and then everyday lingerie; you can have it all now.”

Left: Old Cover – Right: New Cover

As previously reported, Dita is on the cover of Genlux magazine’s latest issue. You’ll be pleased to know that they have amended their questionable shot and photoshopping choices. Dita didn’t like it either.

“As we were getting ready to go to press, I was texting back-and-forth with Dita about her cover and her thoughts were it didn’t look like her. She asked if I’d made her lips larger. Hmmm, good catch Dita. It wasn’t that we made her lips larger, it was that we’d shot at such a low angle, we pinched the jawline, because it looked too wide. The challenge with altering anyone’s face—especially one as recognizable as some of these celebrities, is that the slightest modification can alter them from looking like themselves. This was a good case in point.

I agreed with Dita and decided to hold the presses and to run this image on the cover instead. It’s a flattering shot for her face and the best part is that it looks like Dita! I also decided to kill one of the inside shots that I was going to run, the black and white image. It’s always better to run a shorter story with “great” shots; than to dilute a fashion story with even one “okay” shot. One bad shot can kill four great ones.” – Stephen Kamifuji, Creative Director, Genlux

I'd love to see her do something crazy and fun with Testino and Roitfeld. I feel like that would be a fantastic paring.

HAUTE LIVING: Dita Von Teese Rocks The W San Francisco
by Kelly E. Carter
March 20, 2015

The opportunity to see international burlesque star Dita Von Teese put on a complimentary performance was too tempting for many San Franciscans to pass up, which explains why so many people packed the Living Room Bar of the W San Francisco hotel on March 19. It was all to celebrate the opening of the W Beijing – Chang’an. Von Teese performed in a golden oversized birdcage, symbolic of China’s multi-century love affair with bird keeping, as her fans sipped Beijing-inspired cocktails and cuisine. Before the short but sultry show, which drew boldface names, including designer Karen Caldwell, Olga Dubrovsky and Gypsy Rose Lee’s son Erik Lee Preminger, to the VIP area above the bar, Haute Living chatted with Von Teese.

HL: You’re in San Francisco a lot. What is it about this city that you love?
DVT: This is my favorite city in all of the U.S. to perform. I brought my full length movie here a few times and we sell out almost immediately. We do The Fillmore usually. It’s like people (hanging) from the rafters. It’s the most energetic and diverse crowd. There’s something about San Francisco; it’s so liberated here and I feel like it’s a place that embraces all different kinds of people. I’ve always enjoyed coming here. I feel really supported here.

HL: Tell me about the bird cage you’ll be performing in tonight.
DVT: The W Hotels has created this bird cage art piece. Its not my usual bird cage because I have my own bird cage. But they created this art installation that people can take photos in after the show. I have a golden bird cage that it actually rains on in the inside. I can spin around in it on a perch and the finale is it pours rain down inside of it.

HL: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve performed in?
DVT: It’s never really weird for me because usually I make the props myself. A few times over the years people have built props and I’ve shown up and said “OK, here’s the thing. I’m going to see what I can do with it.” Christian Louboutin built me a giant shoe and it was way bigger than i thought it was going to be. There was a staircase in it. I said, “Oh wow, This is a very large shoe.” Sometimes i have to figure out what i’m going to do with the thing.

HL: You performed at a W New York and you’re going to the W Beijing. What is it about the brand that makes it right for you?
DVT: It’s hip and cool and fun. A lot of hotels (take themselves too seriously). I love staying here because the service is always great. I’ve stayed here over the years when I’ve brought my tour to town. It’s got that cool factor but still the service is up to standard for people who travel all of the time.

HL: Plus, the W is a pet-friendly hotel brand and you travel with your cat Aleister. Did you bring him on this trip?
DVT: I didn’t this time, but I should have. Sometimes on these short trips I don’t like to bring him on the plane. And also (in) my household, everyone wants him to stay there. They’re like, “please leave Aleister for us.” He’s very popular.

HL: He’s a Devonshire Rex and very popular on social media too, right?
DVT: He has 43,000 followers on Instagram now, which is about the same amount as Karl Lagerfeld’s cat so he’s pretty popular. He has a face that people love. He’s got a little bit of a Grumpy Cat thing going.

Dita Von Teese is beautiful in blue while celebrating the opening of W Beijing-Chang’an at the W Hotel’s Rock the Empire event on Thursday (March 19) in San Francisco, Calif.

During the celebration, the 42-year-old burlesque dancer was seen performing in an oversized, voyeuristic birdcage, which was symbolic of China’s love for bird keeping.

“Tonight I was excited to have Gypsy Rose Lee’s son in the audience @WHotels. What wonderful secret stories he’s told me about his mother!” Dita wrote on Twitter after the celebration.

FYI: Dita is wearing a Jenny Packham gown, Christian Louboutin heels, and a Swarovski hand bag at the event and wore Mr. Pearl for her show costume.
