For the past 36 years, Canyon Ranch in Arizona has had reputation as a desert getaway where guests enjoyed deep-tissue massages and seminars about “the power of possibility.”

Now, the resort in Tucson is taking a turn toward tassels.

For five days this summer, (June 8 to 12), the burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese will lead sultry sessions on empowerment—that may involve taking off one’s clothes.

“We’ve never done anything like this before,” said Sheryl Press, Canyon Ranch’s director of public relations and the co-creator of Sensuality and the Art of the Tease. “I’m confident it will be a huge success.”

The agenda will include activities like a FitStrip class, complete with tips on how to remove a garter and gloves, along with mastering the “Burlesque Strut”— “a classic confident walk,” said Ms. Von Teese.

Ms. Von Teese will be in charge, but she insists the attention won’t be on her.

“It really has nothing to do with my performance,” she said, “but more to do with sharing where my motivations and confidence come from, and trying to explain what it is about burlesque that’s become such a uniquely modern feminist movement.”

Along with a beauty workshop, where Ms. Von Teese will demonstrate her own make-up application routine like applying long lashes, participants will also hear a lecture on the history of American burlesque.

“I think it’s important to show people that burlesque in the ‘30s and ‘40s was geared toward men and there was more pomp and circumstance,” she said. “Now, it’s decidedly for females. When I step out on stage, 80 percent of the ticket holders are women. [These classes] will show them how to use the knowledge of modern burlesque in their real lives with confidence and for fun.”

A five-night stay at Canyon Ranch costs $5,460 a person, based on double occupancy. It includes accommodation, meals, airport transfers, $670 worth of spa treatments or medical appointments, gratuities and unlimited classes.

L’Officiel Singapore: Dita Von Teese, The Dolls and Is Tropical Celebrate W Beijing Launch
By Candice Chua
Monday, 20 April 2015

The highlight of the night, however, is undoubtedly the performance by the sexy but ever classy Dita Von Teese. Personally curated by the burlesque queen herself, the sultry cabaret act – the final leg of W Beijing’s Rock The Empire Global Tour – featured a spectacular oversized gilded birdcage, symbolic of China’s multi-century love affair with the art of bird keeping. The 3.5 metre-tall show piece was created with New York-based design firm Nema Workshop and has travelled from the Big Apple through to San Francisco, Singapore and finally, Beijing. Von Teese was also no less spectacular, sporting an elaborate custom-made gold costume as she performed a routine that harked back to the golden age of Hollywood, but with a spellbinding Beijing twist.

“I am thrilled to be here at W Beijing, the hotel that sparked this innovative series of performances,” says Von Teese. “[The night’s] glamourous event was the perfect grand finale in this series of performances for W Hotels.”
