DITA VON TEESE ON THE POWER OF RED LIPSTICK-WRITTEN BY CHRISTIANA
THE BARONESS OF BURLESQUE ON ECCENTRIC GLAMOUR, TACOS AND THE CULT OF RED LIPSTICK
Dita Von Teese – that seductress supreme – is the 21st century femme fatale. As the baroness of burlesque, she is single-handedly responsible for the resurgence of the artful striptease…and resurrection of unabashed glamour. To celebrate the launch of her new book, Your Beauty Mark, and latest collection with M∙A∙C, we chatted with the VIVA GLAM temptress to discuss eccentric glamour, tacos and beer, and the cult of red lipstick.
Your book is subtitled The Ultimate Guide to Eccentric Glamour. What does eccentric glamour mean?
For me, the book is about embracing and celebrating the things that make you different from other people. I think the word glamour, by itself, is tossed around too much and it’s not really used properly. I have my own definition of glamour, which is really about creation. It’s about creating your own persona with the tools in the beauty box and thinking about ways that you can reinvent yourself – and that’s an artistic thing that one would cultivate. It’s about people who really love to create their own aesthetic, people who create mystique and interest in an over-the-top way. I don’t want to hear about rules of beauty; I want to break rules of beauty.
What's the difference between glamour and beauty?
I think beauty is something you’re born with, and glamour is something you create. Someone can be very glamorous who isn’t even pretty. That’s what I love about glamour. I love man-made things in general. I love architecture, I love antiques, I love exquisite beauty that is created by people. I’m more fascinated by people who had to overcome something to be recognized. I’m interested in people who turn themselves into birds of paradise and become something great because they wanted to and they chose to – people who had to work a little bit harder for it.
How do you still maintain a sense of glamour when you aren't able to wear six-inch stilettos and false lashes?
You have to find that one non-negotiable thing that makes you feel confident and polished. If you can refine your routine with just that signature item, you can learn how to get ready in minutes or even seconds! I certainly don’t spend more than 15 minutes to get out of the house on a normal day and I don’t even wear a full face of makeup most days. But what I do wear every day is red lipstick and face powder, and there is no time that I would ever leave the house without that on.
Your look is so refined and flawless, and yet you're still not afraid to discuss seemingly taboo topics like identifying yourself as a stripper. How do you explain this?
I want to stand up for all the other people who are like me. Sometimes people are adamant to identify me as a burlesque artist instead of a stripper, but I’m not ashamed of that word. I’m proud of what I built, I’m proud of my past and how it has evolved into the present. I don’t like to put myself above anything. And sometimes, I’ll even see a burlesque dancer and think, Wow, she can be really good. If we threw her into a strip club for two years straight, she would come out being amazing. A lot of dancers are too aware of trying to be classy or pretty, and they don’t understand the point of what it is to be sexy, which is to be free and have confidence.
What is the one fashion staple every woman should have in her closet?
I would say a great pair of pumps that are closed toe and a moderate height. Go as high as you can handle. Make sure it’s a really well-made shoe and invest in that pair. With heel height, I can go the maximum. I love fetish shoes, so I can go six inches. I wouldn’t go that far for every day, though. Those are my stage shoes or red carpet shoes.
Is there any beauty technique that you still tend to need help with?
Well, I still have to have somebody else do my nails! I don’t like doing my own nails. I’ve been wearing my half-moon manicure since 1991, and back then people used to make fun of me and say, “Why are you wearing your nails like that?” And now they’re all the rage. I like acrylic nails because I like the feel of them and I like the longevity of my nail polish with acrylic.
Do you have any food craving weaknesses?
I love tacos and mezcal! My only vice I ever have is I want to eat tacos and drink mezcal. I live in LA where we have really great Mexican food, and I love places that make their own homemade tortillas.
Do you have any embarrassing onstage moments?
There’s a show that I originally created for my role as the M∙A∙C VIVA GLAM spokesperson, where I rode on a mechanical lipstick. And I still use that bit in my show today, but I ride a bull instead of a lipstick. That costume has a pair of Christian Louboutin boots that were custom-made for me, and they’re super-high and covered in crystals so they’re super-heavy. They also have spurs on them, so they’re really dangerous! I trip over those a lot on stage and that’s really embarrassing. Luckily, I’ve never fallen though!
Tell us about latest collaboration with M∙A∙C on this new lipstick.
I have a whole chapter in my book about lipstick alone and the history of lipstick and why I’m so obsessed with it. With this collaboration, I just wanted to do the quintessential Dita Von Teese red. I think you get addicted to the feeling and the discipline of red lipstick, the glamour of it, the way people tend to notice what you’re saying with it. I feel like when I’m wearing it I can face people and command people more. It’s a little bit like war paint. There’s a lot of power in red lipstick. It’s beauty as power. I feel like there’s camaraderie between women who wear red lipstick. It’s like a club. We’re all these red lipstick queens. I think people are less likely to **** with the girl in red lipstick.
