i'm making a full t-shirtPS I remember Olivier Theyskens wearing a grey Chanel women's blouse ... might have been chiffon. I really like silk/cotton voile and I think a man could definitely wear that. What about a chiffon vest?

i realize i should tone it down for the circumstances. and it breaks my heart that everyday things that i used to wear are falling more and more in the "i can't wear this here" category
. but of course, there will be that day when i get all crazy and don't measure the costs of crossing the line

or so. i trully believe that if everyone would wear what they like, there wouldn't be any avant-gard or weird dressed. i made an experiment one day: i went out dressed completely normal for my standards i had to borrow a pair of jeans! and the result was weird. people kept looking at me and i felt awful. i had to run home and change because i was too uncomfortable.. needless to say, the days that followed result in the most extravagant outfits of that year
I suppose eccentricity is marked by being eccentric for its own sake, perhaps out of a peculiar character or disposition, withholding any sense of purpose. Though Isabella Blow (Izzie) and Anna Piaggi do look like something out of Grey Gardens, there seems to be a method to their madness*.

i agree you have a great style petit lucille.
when i first started wearing weird or avant-garde clothes, i was somewhat uncomfortable, having basically gone straight from the conservative new england farm town where i grew up (think lots of l.l. bean and jc penney) to a major city and i wasn't really used to not blending in.
now i can't imagine not wearing my style. i get the laughing/yelling/pointing/staring fairly often too, even here, but in some perverse way i almost enjoy that because i figure they just don't understand. plus why would i want to sacrifice my aesthetic in order to please those people?
also, on the flip side of that, i have made some great friends just because they saw my outfit and wanted to talk to me, or vice-versa.
i think your experiment shows that you are most at home in your own wonderful style and you should not have to change that just because some people don't understand it.
I find it part of the entertainment value of the item I'm wearing that causes the reaction. You know how some people calculate cost per wear? It's like that
I also find it gives me insight into the character of others, because there are those who understand you're laughing too, and those who don't
Really? I wouldn't compare Blow's or Piaggi's dressing style to Edie's at all. She dressed very simply.
IMO some people might think they're being avant-garde when they're just being gimmicky. I guess I'm even more nitpicky than GasolineRainbow![]()

Maybe we should just take the approach that what members feel is avant garde or pushing the envelope, they can bring in. Let's have a big happy avant garde tent![]()

and i'd be fine seeing someone or 666 just wearing leather pants in this thread
even if some of us in the fashion world might be already accustomed to it.
especially if we know where they are wearing it
it's all an attempt for them anyhow ^^
i find it very weird when people say things like i love it, but i would never wear itor so.
) And the second interpretation is that it's a sincere, well-meaning complement. I know for myself, I can deeply admire and be (abstractly) inspired by a person's style without wanting to emulate it. Which brings me to what Fashion.fashoff said:i get the laughing/yelling/pointing/staring fairly often too, even here, but in some perverse way i almost enjoy that because i figure they just don't understand. plus why would i want to sacrifice my aesthetic in order to please those people?

It's unavoidable when your style is 'pushing the envelope', and I would argue that avant garde partly has to do with seeking attention, approval, or some kind of reaction; I don't mean in a pathological way, but in the way we all seek those things. And there are different kinds of stares, some more respectful than others
I tend to mix what have been characterized as 'dull'
items with bolder choices, but ... while I have some awareness of which are which, I am always surprised by the things that get the huge reaction ... because I just liked them. You know?
