Celebrities are usually on their best behaviour when being interviewed so I always take it with a grain of salt when a reporter gushes about how polite or well-mannered someone is. If your coworkers think you're an @ss, I think that carries more weight since they spent long hours with you and probably saw your real personality.

Well, most of her coworkers have had nothing but nice things to say about her.
-Flo Greenberg, who was Rossum's coach at the Actors Workshop, says her former student isn't driven by fame.
"Emmy is not an aggressive, publicity-grabbing young actress," Greenberg says. "I did say to her once - and I don't know if she heard me - that I don't think it is a good idea to date actors in the same cast. But she is so serious about her work that it probably never would occur to her to do that."from the NY Daily News
-Andrew Lloyd Webber: "I was sort of bowled over, because it had been a joy to work with her" from Comingsoon.net

-Patrick Wilson: "At the end of the day it doesn't matter how many publicists or agents or hair people say this or that. When you walk onto a set and you're not only the leading lady but the youngest person there, I would imagine you go one of two ways: You either crawl into a corner and go 'Can I come out now?' Or you go 'Here I am'. Emmy does the later. That's who she is. But her strength to me is eye to eye-listening to eachother and working together-and she does that. Something just happens when the camera starts rolling, and those scenes we shot together, that's where the joy was for me." from Elle
-Gerard Butler:CS: How was it working with Emmy, who was a relative newcomer to making movies?
Butler: She's wonderful, extremely talented, and she's beautiful. I was there at the screen test when she walked in. She hadn't even sung a word, and I said to Joel "That's Christine". She's incredible sensual, but also very innocent looking. She's hugely confident but professional, and she's done the most amazing job as Christine." from Comingsoon.net

--Joel Schumaker:""She knew the best of the text. She was untiring and was never late." from Paris Match
-"I think it's a great deal of pressure on any child," he allows, "to have to do an adult's job in an adults works. But Emmy doesn't seem to be a workaholic. she has tons of friends, and a boyfriend - she's in love."from Teen Vogue
-"She's very formidable about her feelings and her thoughts, which I think is great. I think Emmy should give lessons on how to be a professional. She was the most prepared, the most tireless, never late. She would do a thousand takes if you'd let her." from Elle
Some people she's worked with have explained why she sometimes comes off as a diva:

-Alan Hruska (director of Nola)-"She has a very keen sense of her own worth- and that may not be a quality that's universally admired" from Elle
-Maggie Greenwald (director of Songcatcher)-"This was her first film and she was incredable assertive for someone that inexperienced, but if you have a lot of talent, like Emmy does, you can get away with that, up to a point" from Elle

-Jake Gyllenhaal: "Emmy has such a presence. When I met her at her audition, I thought I was auditioning for her"

To me it sounds like she's very professional, very dedicated to her work and very assertive. She doesn't waste time and she wants the best of herself to be refleted in everything she does. Often people take that as being bitchy, snobby etc. when in reality it has nothing to do with the other person. I'm kind of a perfectionist myself and when I was in school, some people thought I looked down on them. That wasn't the case at all, I wanted to do the best work I was capable of. It was about my standards for myself- not anyone else. I'm still like that. And people who spend a lot of time with me and get to know me realize that, and come to understand that I'm actually a pretty nice person. But with people who don't know me that well, I'm often afraid they comne away with a false impression of my character.
