Fashion Gets Political

thanks lena...i think my life is so politically orientated that it's nice to get away from it all sometimes and tfs is a great place...i'll try find some more political fashion stuff!
hmm you are not alone Amelie, i'm also extremely politically orientated but i keep it safely locked in the closet while posting at FS  keep researching in political messages in fashion :flower:

funny that Chalayan's latest ss04 collection is actually recognised as political, its true of course , even if i didnt really get a clear political message when i saw his 'fighters in Cyprus' clothes.
For fw04.05 he's getting a bit exaggerating with his policeman-in-the-city prints

ps: thanks all for the wonderful fashion items posted :flower:

prince...helena works in a law firm...i think she knows what she's talking about...and having a degree really proves nothing...i'm sorry...but it's true... :flower: ...just another harsh reality to face... :ninja: ...nothing is as it seems...
thanks softgrey - thats the point i was trying to make. qualifiactions do not necessarily make a person clever or more informed about the world nor do they make someone an arbiter of what is 'right' - those things come partly as least from the soul and most importantly the strength of ones moral fibre & convictions.

i actually styled the poster for that michael moore film...it felt good...that made me feel like i was part of the political process even if I was just getting clothes and props(remember when i bought the surfboard?)...at least it was for a project that i believed in...makes my job seem less frivolous somehow...
wow!!! softgray, i'm sooo proud of you!!! hehe, i luv michael, he's great...it's hard for ppl to take critism sometimes but i think he still persists no matter what the backlash and despite what ppl say, he's very patriotic to america. [/b][/quote]
thx amelie... ...i'm really glad i had the opportunity to contribute...even if it's in a tiny way...and i love love love the hussein chalayan pieces you posted...i could use one of those inflatable outfits in case i have to escape from NY...  ...hahaha...it's an island you know... ...

i miss moschinos's political statements...and kenneth cole is always right there...you should have seen his first show after 9/11...he played a slideshow beforehand with words flashing across the screen and images...and just great music....

THINK.................................................................picture of the twin towers standing proudly....

very powerful stuff....interesting to watch these hardened fashionistas trying to keep it together at that point...can't fall apart in the front row now...(sarcasm)...i really respect kenneth cole's advertising....

What about the portfolio that various designers did for i-D several months ago? That was impressive. Dries Van Noten's shirt that looked like it was dipped in blood still stands out in my mind. I have the link to the issue, but no actual pictures.

Basically, different designers made anti-war clothing. The link lists the designers, but no pix :(

 Guys, growing up where i grew up politics and fashion went hand in hand ( also religion ).
But This was during late 60's and 70's, so we had the Black Panthers and their wannabes in the berets, leather jacket and
and Shades, You had the revolutinaries with their Disheikes ( I know my spelling is wrong , sorry), You you had the
The Nation Of Islam brothers out there very dapper in their suits , clean shaven and bow ties, and everybody had to be like Angela ( Davis) with the big Afro!!! Now days not many people stand for anything, but some entertainners do even rappers:
remember De La Soul with their Black Leather African Medallions ( these were to replace the big gold chains of the old school hip hop order, along with denouncing the $100 dollar sneakers, that that poor urban people were getting killed over
Same with Public Enemy). As someone stated earlier the whole PUNK movement was great and demanded the world take notice and hear and see their message. remeber the "Frankie Says" T-shirts and their comments on sex and the Cold War. And everyone should know Marly and Reggie and the fashion that still survives today because of them. Hell I was even at a
County Fair in the south a few years ago and I saw t-shirts proudly diplayed saying "KKK- the original boys in the hood!"
,scared the sh*t out of me, my cousins just laughed.

As neither you cannot use any empirical measurement of what is 'right' and what exactly a 'soul' consists of is a fairly dubious topic I would steer clear of it...

I'm sorry, but I do not agree with Helena or Softgrey that a a degree proves nothing. And do not patronise me by telling me it's a harsh reality of life. Both my parents were senior lecturers in Russell Group universities and I will make my own judgement on the merits of the academic system. It is simply impossible to achieve a 1/1 in most subjects at a top university. It is no coincedence that 24 of the 57 British primeministers were Oxford graduates. Sassoon, Golding, Haig, Asquith, Locke, Wren, Einstein, Auden, Donne, Lawrence, CS Lewis, Oscar Wilde, TS Eliot, Beerbohm, Atlee, Clinton and last but not least Dr. Seuss were all Oxford graduates and Cambridge boasts an equally impressive list. A good proportion of famous British intellectuals are Oxbridge graduates alone.

However, no-one has taken up my point that Bush has power and the fact that he has the power over the lives of nearly 300,000,000 people deserves more respect than silly puns....

Not to mention it is useless trying to fight hate with hate. There are much more constructive ways you can try to improve the situation in the world today even if change only comes in babysteps. :flower:

kind of like bloodstained clothes and 'violent themes' were a HUGE influence
when i visited the graduate expo of designer schools in Paris, but i only took them as 'violent', kind of like accident inspired.
never -until now- i thought of them as 'politicaly influence-d' .
now all of a sudden  it does make sense

thank you faust, thats the beauty of FS,
communicating new perspectives  :flower:

then make your own judgement sweet prince...i've obviously already made mine...

but both my parents are academics as well...and ive seen many very clever people who simply did not perform well in an academic situation...while i also witnessed people who weren't especially gifted 'work the system' and excel...each case is unique and i choose not to make assumptions based on pieces of paper...whether they be diplomas or dollars...

i base my opinions of bush on his actions and deeds...as i would any other person...

your second issue isn't relevant to me because i too think the slogans are rather pointless, but for different reasons...because i don't they mean anything...especially on your underwear!!!

hussein chalayan's designs illustrate my idea of a political statement...not a peace t-shirt...design me a wearable life raft...an escape from the madness in this world...that's just genius to me....
love love love...
