- Italian Neo-Realism masterpiece - The Bicycle Thieves by Vittorio de Sica

^ That's an amazing movie; I second that recomendation.
But my favorite Vittorio de Sica movie and, imo de Sica's real masterpiece, is "Umberto D." It's an amazing film...well-written and well-acted (the titular character had never acted before this film, and he's wonderful in it).

A lovely, charming Czech film is Kolya..

It got an Oscar for Best Foreign Film if I'm not mistaken.

A lot of great movies have been mentioned already, but here are some other great ones.

Dirty Pretty Things (UK)
Iedereen beroemd!/ Everybody Famous!(Belgium)
Beautiful People (UK)
Gori Vatra/Fuse (Bosnia-Herzegovina)
No Man's Land (Bosnia-Herzegovina)
Marsal (Croatia)
Shi mian mai fu/House of Flying Daggers (China)
Der Untergang/downfall (Germany)
Sophie Scholl - Die letzten Tage/ Sophie Scholl - The Final Days (Germany)
Das Experiment/The Experiment (Germany)

The best movies (already mentioned) everybody should watch are:

La Vita e bella, such a beautifull, funny and sad movie, simply wonderfull!
Y tu mamá también, great story, one of the most honest movies about friendship I have ever seen.
Amores Perros, gritty story, very well acted and directed.
Goodbye Lenin, so funny and sweet!
Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, just great, su sweet so funny, so true.
Un long dimanche de fiançailles, wonderfull, sad but sweet.

Another recommendation: Dutch movies are terrible! It doesn't mather if there old or new, they are just bad.

agree . . french new wave is essential
godard, truffaut, chabrol . .
recently saw 'sur mes levres' . . highly recommended!

It's not artsey, it's not deep, but it's beautifully done and fun: Le Pacte des loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf). *And don't dare watch the English dub*

Great recommendations from everybody!
I thank you all for participating in this thread, I'm sure that everybody who are foreign movie lovers will appreciate them as well. :flower:

I  the French film Love me if you dare

There are many reasons to see it, but I'll give you one reason..

Nice idea for a thread! :flower:

there are many movies I'd recomend that people have mentioned already, so here are some other ones I like:

*German:
The Edukators (Die Fetten Jahre Sind Vorbei)
What to do in case of fire? (Was tun, wenn's brennt?)
Big Girls Don't Cry (Grossen Madchen Weinen Nicht)
Crazy (Crazy)
Nowhere in Africa (Nirgendwo in Afrika)

*French:
The American Night (La nuit américaine)
Yes, but... (Oui, mais...)
He loves me... he loves me not (À la folie... pas du tout)
(I just have a passion for German anf French movies )

*Fellini classics:
La Dolce Vita
The Road (La Strada)

*Also recommend Nicotina, I believe it is Mexican, correct me if I'm wrong

*Oh and not foreign to me but certainly to most of you, some Brazilian movies I find interesting to the foreign audience:
The Man Who Copied (O Homem que Copiava) - very funny and interesting
Central Station (Central do Brasil) - beautiful and touching
City of God (Cidade de Deus) - strong and kinda edgy

Last night I watched Zhou Yu's Train (China), very nice movie, beautiful photography, deep symbolism and probably a movie that has to be watched many times to fully understand it.

I would recommend it.

I would recommend:
No mans Land(Slovenia)-great
Anything by Almodovar&Fellini-i am obssesed with their movies!
Jules et Jim(classic)
Last Tango in Paris
A bout de souffle

great corean film: bin-jip by kim ki-duk.

i film that really surprised me, i did not expect such an extraordinary movie.

if someone wants to watch this film but does not like to know parts of the plot in advance, don't read on. i'm not good at film reviews anyway.

it's the story about a young man who survives by breaking into empty houses. there, it seems, he not only seeks food and shelter, but tasting the life the others usually live, he looks through the owner's belonging, takes care of their plants and so on. in return he cleans the house or does some maintencance jobs before leaving the house the next day.

one day he enters a house, that is not momentarily vacant like he assumed, instead he finds a reclusive woman, she is married to an abusive husband who is currently away on business and left her scared and intimidated. they very slowly befriend each other, never speaking a word with each other. after the husband's return, she runs away with the squatter (who punished the husband by hitting him with his golfballs) sharing his life in complete silence and falling in love with him. of course, the revenge-seeking husband and the ugly noisy world is still out there :innocent:

the story is told so masterly, using some wonderful metaphors for the growing love and the perfect balance between the two lovers, and even surprising the viewer with some funny moments. the film is shot beautifully and has an elegance and lightness to it, i haven't seen often yet.

i do really recommend it.

A Danish film called Villa Paranoia found its way onto my Netflix queue. I've bumped it to the top, as it looks better than anything I put on my list consciously. It appears to be about people and chickens, their weird symbiosis.

You're right, and I forgot to mention every last one of those directors  Upon remembering, I did consider revisiting this thread and even tossing Cocteau into the mix for good measure... money is money, as they say, and French is French, as they don't. :D But I see you've done the greater part of my job already... :P

I just caught Der Untergang (Downfall) on TV, and I couldn't believe I'd never seen it before. It is an amazing and brutally honest film.

i want to see that. danish films are probably my favorites.

Two movies by Tarkovsky - Solaris, and Stalker. You'll never see cinema like that every again.

East-West was a decent Russian/French film, but already Western audience-oriented.

Head-on was a great film.

Pretty much anything by Lars von Trier

Red, Blue, White trilogy by Kischlowsky (sp?)

Anything by Kusturitsa (sp) if you are in a crazy mood...

EUROPA, EUROPA is a great, but now forgotten film about WWII.

Italian for Beginners was a sweet Danish film.

Amoldovar is overrated IMHO (flame-suit on)

^:o shh, i was planning to rent a movie by tarkovsky today. after being verbally humiliated by a friend cause I hadnt seen anything.

i agree about almodovar.
is kusturitsa as in...emir?.

/\ yes. it's kind of crazy, i'm not a big fan, but I only saw one film, so it's hard to judge. some people love him, though. I still have to see Arizona Dream - can't find it anywhere...
