I was wondering what your favorite French films were?

I've recently watched The Diving Bell and the Butterfly again and it sparked my interest with French films.

Sorry if there's already a thread about French cinema.

I love French cinema. My favorites are probably these:
La Belle et La Bete (Beauty and the Beast) -1946
Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) - 1964
Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources (Manon of the Spring)- 1986

Other great ones
Les Diaboliques- 1955
Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes Without A Face)- 1960
La Mariee Etait En Noir (The Bride Wore Black)-1968
La Sirene de Mississippi (Mississippi Mermaid) -1969
L'Histoire D'Adele H (The Story of Adele H) -1975
La Reine Margot (Queen Margot)- 1994
La Cite Des Enfants Perdus (The City of Lost Children)-1995

Some more recent films I loved:
A La Folie...Pas Du Tout (He Loves Me...He Loves Me Not....)- 2002
Jeux D'Enfants (Love Me If You Dare)- (2003)
Un Long Dimanche De Fiancailles (A Very Long Engagement) -2004

I'm probably forgetting like a million great ones....

Okay since I'm french, here are my favorite films:

* Jeux D'Enfants
* Ensemble C'est Tout
* Je Vais Bien, Ne T'en Fait Pas
* Ne Le Dis A Personne
* Le Fabuleux Destin D'Amélie Poulain
* Les Petits Mouchoirs
* L'Arnacoeur
* Les Choristes

I'll stop here, my list would go on and on.. :)

Latest French film I saw was Angel-a, not the best movie :\ J'adore cinema francais.

I liked 'Summer Hours' by Oliver Assayas and 'Paris' by Cédric Klapisch. Both starred Juliette Binoche.
I like all the films by Godard and Bresson.

Nathalie (2003):totally fabulous and I don't care how bad the reviews were :p

...and the music to les choristes (2004) has to be one of my favourite movie soundtracks of all time...

One I love is deux jours a paris by Julie Delpy. Though I'm totally sure you'd consider it a french movie or not...

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain or better known in America as Amelie (2001). It's certainly a good film and especially a nice introduction to French cinema if you haven't seen any/or just a few French films. ^_^

there's la rafle too, I haven't seen it yet but everyone has told me that it's really good and very sad.

And just to put them out there, there's also some humor films that are cult in france like the sous doués, les bronzés, most of louis de funes' movies, and then the more recent ones like chouchou...

Rififi (1955 )

excellent movie about a jewelery heist, famous for the heist scene where there is
no dialogue or music for about half an hour. Trust me, it's absolutely incredible.

this is back when they knew how to create suspense and tension without saying a word.

I LOVE l'Enfant. It won the Palme d'or in 2005 but it isn't exactly the happy-watch-anytime film that Amelie or Les Choristes are.

It's heavy going but definitely worth it for anyone who loves beautiful emotional acting.

(gee I'm french and haven't seen half of these :ninja:)

I did kind of like bus palladium, but I think it's because it's a better movie than the other one Elisa Sednaoui played in... (and that I love ELISA... ^_^)

I love Les Enfants Terribles, Belle de Jour, Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain & La Môme.

I need a must-see list of french movies, i just love them because usually the images are pretty artistic/beautiful and they leave with a flavour of fantasy with the plot:

Au revoir les enfants (1987)
Les Roseaux sauvages (1994) -
Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain
Les Choristes (2004)
Innocents - The Dreamers (Half italian movie one of my favourites)

And don't remember any other at the moment.

The ones I love:

Jeux d'enfants,
Le fabuleux destin d'amélie poulain,
Les choristes,

Older but timeless ones (musicals):
Les parapluies de cherbourg,
Les demoiselles de rochefort

And if you're more fluent in French and/or understand in French slang there are quite good series I've been watching recently:
Fais pas ci fais pas ça
Un gars, une fille
