French Films

Some of my favorites:

35 Shots of Rum (Claire Dennis, 2008)
Phantom India (Louis Malle, 1969)
Sans Soleil (Chris Marker, 1983)
The Fire Within (Louis Malle, 1963)
The City of Lost Children (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 1995)
Amélie (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001)

Louis Malle is a wonderful director, many of his films are a delight, (he's also the director of Au revoir les enfants which I think has been mentioned in this thread already).

J'adore Louis Malle, surtout:

Zazie dans le métro
L'Ascenceur pour l'échafaud (fantastic soundtrack by Miles Davis!! )

also any earlier film with Isabelle Adjani

so i moved to Paris
and part of my assimilation includes french cinema.

not really fond of the recent stuff.
much like italian cinema, i prefer the classics

i will go by directors

jean cocteau: beauty and the beast, orpheus (his trilogy is brilliant but his centerpiece is also his best)
Godard: breathless, band of outsiders, contempt
melville: le samourai, les enfant terrible, army of shadows, bob le flambeur
rene clement : purple noon, forbidden games, gervaise

will think of more later

but these are definitely some of the best of french cinema

Ne le dis a personne by Guillaume Canet is a good one if you like action films. I highly recommend it.

I recently saw Belle De Jour for the first time. Definitely recommended.

Pierrot le Fou for one. It's probably my favorite.

I also liked "Chocolat" by Claire Denis and Truffaut's The 400 Blows.

So many...

I'm in love with French comedies. My fav are Amelie, Rrrrrr & Non-stop shenanigans.

French New Wave Cinema & Femininity

I am a lover of French Style and those movies of the 60s that highlight the beauty of French Femininity.

This thread is to share your favourite iconic French movies and their style. But also to talk of French Femininity as portrayed in Film.

My video tries to show both classic French New Wave cinema starlets and their style but also the modern embodiment of French Femininity in Anna Mouglalis.

Looking forward to your views and comments on this thread.

One of my absolute favourite films is Cet Obscur Objet du Désir (1977), by Buñuel. I also really like Et Dieu... Créa la Femme, with Brigitte Bardot :)

Has Breathless been mentioned yet? That's one of my favorites. Le Samourai, Plein Soleil, La Piscine. I'm an Alain Delon fan. If you think Brad Pitt and Robert Redford are sexy, in the words of the most annoying Game of Thrones character, "You know nothing."

Also:

La Vie En Rose
Tell No One
A Very Long Engagement
(very first French--possibly foreign genre in general--that I ever watched)
The Intouchables (Omar Sy )
Sarah's Key
A Christmas Tale (especially if you're in love with Mathieu Amalric as I am)

I love french films, I dig almost every Isabelle Huppert film, I'm also a big fan of Truffat and Godard, recently I saw "Love me if you dare" (Sorry, I can't remember the name in french) it's a nice comedy, I'd recommend it along with "Hors de prix". Rust and bone was pretty okay too.

Has anyone seen Diva? It's one of my first french films I fell in love with. I also like The Apartment, Hiroshima, mon amour , The Bridesmaid, Un coeur en hiver and many more.

I'll second La Reine Margot. My god, saw this back in the 90s and it's a film that haunts me still. It's brutal, raw, disturbing and tender. The urgency in this film is untouchable. Isabelle Adjani is amazing amazing amazing as Queen Margot-- just no words to describe her performance and her beauty. I would confuse her with Monica Bellucci all the time.

I know there's a cult around this film that praises it as a masterpiece, but I think La Samourai is extremely overrated. It may have worked for the time it came out in, but it's too simple with too many plot-contrivances/conveniences that just aren't acceptable to me for modern standards. Very strong and graphic art direction, though. Alan Delon, on the other hand, is deserving of all the praise he gets, and he is too beautiful for words, it's true, chickadee-- but I'm sure Ygritte will still us... we "know nothing..."

The first French film I saw was Subway (1985) & I found it wonderful cinematic experience that I remember to this day. French movies always leave me with a lasting emotion that runs the gauntlet from happy to sadness but not a shallow quick fix sentiment of a blockbuster.

Camille Claudel (1988)
Au revoir les enfants (1987)
My Father's Glory (1990)
My Mother's Castle (1990)
Jesus of Montreal (1989) Canadian but in French - does that count?

I recently saw Delicacy (2011) starring Audrey Tautou which was a perfectly titled "romantic dramady" about a young widow who finds new love in an unexpected place.

I also saw Hearbreaker not too long ago. That was just a lot of fun. It was sweet and silly.

I loved Fin août, début septembre (Late August, Early September) by Olivier Assayas.

Also, La science des rêves (The Science of Sleep) by Michel Gondry and My Little Princes by Eva Ionesco are lovely.

Just saw "Rust and Bone" so I'm glad to see this thread updated.

Anyone here seen it? I thought it was brilliant!
