GAP - what are your opinions??

The Gap has always been associated with the word cheap since the beginning way back in the 70's when they were early advocates of people wearing "sweat/exercise clothes" on the street! Even today...there's even a negative connotation using their name. The GAPIFICATION of the fashion & clothing industry is not a compliment. Basically it means everyone looking the same like during Chairman Mao's time in China :yuk: Woe to anyone who has a strong sense of personal style.

America has become the dumping ground of badly made clothing from sweatshops of the world. As a result Americans (who are getting fatter by the minute) look terrible from an aesthetic point of view. We don't emphasize how garments fit but on what the garment is. :doh:

I, for one, am loving Gap's current collection (UK) they've got some fabulous pieces and I can't understand how they are still losing profit (though I can understand that with Joss Stone as your fashion frontwoman things must be difficult, I don't exactly look at her as being style savvy)

What do you all think?

I'm off to buy a grey wool pleated skirt from there tmrw. V. Marc Jacobs when worn with a polo neck or pussybow blouse!

I presonally disklike Gap, but then again I'm a guy and their guy cloths suck. They ussually have only a small section with very very prepy cloths

Obviously, they are not there to supply the masses with fashion forward clothing, but their basics are versatile and reliable. Plus, they stay in american sizes even in the UK, just to make everyone feel thin1 Cant complain. hehe

SO TRUE. That's why no one fawns over American style.

i like gap. i've never had a prob with their quality and i think for non-exorbitant prices, their pieces are very nice looking and far from tacky.

at the mall here, gap seems to be pretty popular. i would never compare it to walmart because walmart's clothes fit awfully (too large and shapeless)

plus it helps that their jeans are the only ones that fit shorties like me :smile:

Maybe there is another topic here that I missed but, are they any good clothing stores that can be found in American malls? I live near a fairly large shopping mall, but all the stores there, including Gap (although I did find a cute wool coat there once) are :X. I've lived in the States for almost 13 years now, but I still only clothes shop when I'm visiting in London!

good pants for men!

My bf goes there but for girls HELLL NO!just fudu! I bought pinstripe pants and within a month it was looked aged. For guys its ok but for girls their stuff is VERY VERY bland i mean its good for middle class white america but for trendier europeans , canadians and urbanites in general STAY AWAY! banana republic is ok but it ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ me , you can go HM or zara and buy better quality and cheaper price .

GAP = bad quality

I bought 2pairs of cords last year, both of them are falling apart now. Sweaters shrinked and changed shape, another pants also changed shape and don't fit well any more...

Also Banana Republic disappointed me. I bought 2 sweaters for $58 each some weeks ago. I wore one and thought it was not so great quality so I returned the second one. This one, after being washed 2 times (both times by hand) has totally lost its shape, the sleeves became way too long, just horrible :doh: Could I go back to the shop to complain?

I'm not really a fan at all. Their fabrics are really awful and the cuts tend to not fit my figure - too big and wide. It might be cheap, but aside from basic things like tanktops and camisoles I stay away - its just not worth it to me.

That pretty much sums up my sentiment. Even if something looked cute at Gap, it always looks bad when I try it on because the cut is just too weird on my body. Everything is always wider and bigger in random places like at the hips, the bust, the armholes... :ermm:

Boring, they lack a direction in their clothes. To me, I just see clothes, but nothing interesting or stand out. Sure its mean to be simple and preppy, but they could be doing better than they are imo. Although I occasionaly see something thats on sale for more than 70% off thats not bad, especially pants for $23.

Very dull. I haven't once seen something I'd actually buy in there. Unfortunately my mum and I have a voucher that we've been passing back and forth 'cos neither of us wants to buy anything. It's already 2 years old!

Exactly! So horrible.

GAP is terribly overpriced for what it is... most of the jerseys would retail at about the same as American Apparel, and they are producing sweatshop free in the USA... I think others should follow the lead and take a little responsability, you CAN make profits without exploiting people.

Gap in Oxford St UK at the mo is actually putting out some good stuff-i know about the whole sweatshop thing and I think it's awful but that wasn't really what I was asking. I rarely buy anything from Gap but recently got a cropped cape/jacket, a sweater dress and skinny cords which I'm pleased with but I totally agree with the sizes-mental! drives me up the wall! though it does make me feel thin because as a pose to buying normal British sizes I get to buy 2 and 4! One plus to the atrocity that is the Gap sizes. I find that with Topshop and Hennes around, I have a better chance of buying something from Gap that other people will not have. I once went to a party and 5 girls were wearing the same Topshop dress. Nightmare.

yeah, why not gap makes affordable but yet stylish and comfortable pieces.. loving the winter collection..

GAP=Generally Appalling Purveyors

Have you noticed that all the mannequins have pinning in the backs to give the stuff some shape?

I personally dont find anything appealing with gap. Their menswear is pretty boring and all looks the same. I see guys on the street wearing gap and then the guy behind him is wearing the same thing in a different color so no, can't be original with gap at all. plus its overpriced..
