GAP - what are your opinions??

I think the Gap stinks. If I ever have bought anything there, I am so non-pulsed about it. It's just icky. Preppy, boring and mass produced.

Otherwise, the problem with Gap is that it is so widely available that anyone can afford it which means once you buy something. Joe schmo across the street can too, and so can his son, Joe Schmo Jr. which means it's that much more difficult to stand out.

Plus Gap is a bit boring too, it recycles old styles (much like other brands in the same running as Gap, ie, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Aeropostale) It never changes, they never get exciting; a lot like the same people who shop there.

basically, i completely hate them. they charge way too much for what the try to sell, as if their brand can even hope to compete with fine clothing labels -- american apparel is cheaper than them and even though they're simple, they provide basics that don't rely on forced labor and i would rather wear that than GAP any day of the week.

I agree, and I don't know if the collections are the same in Paris and in the US or in the UK but I think they have cute clothes and accessorizes and plus, that's not really expensive.

I love american apparel! Ive been following them on the internet for the passed couple years and finally a store was put in really close to where I live! I like their clothes and the fact that they are made by a small american company in LA makes me feel a lot better than buying sweatshop clothes. Does anyone know of any other good quality american brands where the clothes are american made? Id be interested to know.

I think it's a horrible company with tons of sweatshop abuses in poor countries and they exploit child labor... So no thanks....

I worked at a gap, ( i was a student and needed the money) and they jack up the prices like anything. My managers, kept telling me i needed to wear things from their current collection Spring 2004 at the time. I just couldn't bring myself to it. The underwear is so so, and you're paying for overpriced homogenous blandness.

Agreed. I tried on some jeans yesterday and they fit okay in the hip area, but the waist was grossly misproportioned (huge). Not even a belt would help.

I think GAP's younger customers have migrated to American Eagle and Abercrombie for overpriced preppy attire. GAP has zero prestige among youth and that is a huge problem. I'm not sure what they can do.

I have a pair of jeans from the Gap I bought on sale for $40, they had a crease down the center, when I washed the jeans, the crease got really really noticeable in the bottom and lighter. I wear them as they look 'okay' but I won't be buying jeans there again.
I also have a belt I got on sale there for like $5 it's a like those loop ribbons belts, but made out of cotton, it's hard to get on and off and dirtys easily. I looove the print though so I wear it often.

haha, everything I've ever bought from there was on sale... I have a very limited budget so I won't consider Gap cheap.. just in quality.

I'm not much interested in GAP. I think it is kind of overpriced for what you get. Most of their stuff is kind of dull or just very basic. I guess it's okay for office-casual-appropriate staples, but I personally don't shop there. I have a couple of GAP pieces I have gotten at the thrift shop, and I am satisfied with the quality and wear of them, but I am satisfied with a tee-shirt I paid $2 for, not $16.

When I'm shopping secondhand I aim for higher quality than GAP most of the time anyhow. It's only if the color of something really appeals to me, like the one green top I bought, or the one brown argyle sweater. Most of their pallette is so mousy most of the time, though, that their stuff doesn't stand out to my eyes.

I concur, I'm a part of that age group and am vital proof of that theory. I much rather go to AE than GAP, but Abercrombie that's another thing .

I think some of Gaps sweaters and shirts are pretty nice at times and have a lower price range than crappier quality/style stores such as Hollister and Abercrombie yuk. They have sales a lot too. I find that their pants and jackets are quite ill-fitting though. However, after watching a movie about sweatshops, I think I'll take my business elsewhere. Some clothes companies have their clothes manufactured in places such as Saipan, which is an island that is considered American territory, and then slap on the label "made in U.S.A." But don't just label Gap as bad because lots of other companies use sweatshops too, like Banana Republic and Abercrombie.

I'm not so hot on the Gap, everytime i buy something within a week like 3 people at my office have it too. i HATE that. and you cant deny their deplorable human rights violations.

Its funny you said that... I just finished a shoot with them and EVERYTHING (down to the babies clothes) were tailored!
