Health Food Beginner

i smell on vanilla powder whenever i feel the need for sugar.

^ I was not sure if one if necessarily better than the other, but I did know they have different health benefits. I decided to do some internet surfing and found this:

I guess white tea is healthier, but green tea is known to have a thermogenic effect and slightly helps to burn calories. :flower:

Thanks for the info! I have tried both and whilst green tea has a stronger flavour I feel like it actually does a lot more than the white tea... I read somewhere a dietitian recommended 8 glasses of green tea a day to detox your body but that just sounds plain crazy to me!

You should try white tea with a natural strawberry flavour it's so nice!

I'm starting to eat healthier now too :)

Like most, I'm taking small steps, and the first one is to incorporate more fruit and veg into my diet. I eat about 4 at the moment, and want to get it up to 5-a-day.

However, I heard the government (UK at least) said it should be 7-a-day and say 5 because its easier for people to aim for.

How much should I be eating?? Ideally at least. What is a good number to aim for?

Thanks for any help :flower:

On the bottom of my fruit salad it said:

'The Department of Health recommends that we consume five 80g portions of different fruit and vegetables a day'.

Hope that helps :)

^The Danish government says 600g, I believe. Fruit and veggies are SO expensive, it's just not realistic if you're a student.

I'm using figwee (www.figwee.com) to keep track of what I eat (thanks to couture_tribe ) and it's really great! I've noticed that I eat way too few/less (what is right?) protein and the little snacks I take add up to quite a lot.

One thought that keeps me motivated to eat and live healthier is what effect it has on my body in the long run (cancer, diabetes etc.).

Fruit/Veg prices are quite good over here. Teso & CoOp do a good deal - each week 5 fruit/veg are half price!

Everything in DK is at least 40% more expensive than the rest of Europe. Food is SO expensive :( I can't afford to eat as healthy as I would like to.

Why is produce so expensive where you live Ida?....
Is it all brought in from other countries and you're paying for that?...
If so , I would try a home veggie garden.

I am also trying to do better with my diet.
I eat to much crap....
and it's starting to effect how I feel.

do you have to pay for that website, laurette ?
cause I really would like to join, but it looks like it is expensive.

I just registered on sparkpeople.com today. It is amazing...and free. :woot: Anyway, it actually made me realize that I need to eat more.

I joined sparkpeople.com now, too. :flower:thanks a lot cosmogrl5

are they kidding me? I can't plan a diet there, cause i would be in the underweight afterwards.

^ I didn't plan a diet there, but I chose the "healthy lifestyle" template instead. Maybe you should try that? I think you can still use all of the same tools as the "dieters" can use. ;)

hell, I don't have to pay anything for figwee, otherwise I wouldn't use it ;)

I live in Denmark and the veggies and everything else is grown here. Actually, DK produces food for 20 million people. Everything is expensive here. The increasing prices for electricity and raw material and lack of labour makes the price for veggies go up another 15% very soon. I think Denmark is the most expensive country to live in, right after Norway. I also noticed that the prices on most products went up 20-30% after new year's, and I shop discount :ninja:

I live in an appartment and I'm a student, I don't have the space, time or money to grow my own veggies...

^ That sucks.
It really bugs me that eating well is so much more expensive that eating junk.

There was a segment on Today this morning about how much sugar/cals Americans get from just beverages. Average is something like 450 cals/day- which I think is nuts.
I have been trying to cut down on my juice and soda drinking.

I find how much soda people drink really shocking. When I actually drank soda often, the most I usually had was once or 2 a week, but my mother has mentioned that people she works with drink it like I drink water, which is quite a lot. And eating well should really be cheaper than being able to get unnatural junk that doesn't even really provide a person with nutrition.

Coincidentally, I was trying to tell a co-worker today who has a 10 cans of soda a day habit that even though she is drinking diet and not regular, it is still unhealthy. She cannot even leave work at the end of the day before grabbing a can to drink during her 15 minute drive home. I was telling her that water would be better, but I don't think it worked...
