Health Food Beginner

It's hard to tell someone who's obviously obsessed with drinking/eating something that they have a problem without sounding judgmental, you know?

Anyway, I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I eat a lot of flax seed meal. Put it in yogurt, cereal, brownies, cake, oatmeal, sauce, just about anything.

^ Does it have a taste?

Cosmogrl5- I think the fact that your co-worker drinks diet is just as bad too!
Those artifical sweetners are bad news, IMO.
It's very nice of you to try and help her.
Maybe you should suggest she just cut down first....
Have a soda, then a water, then a soda, and so on and so forth until she can up the water and eventually cut out the soda all together.
That's what my dad did and it really worked for him.

No, it does not have a taste. That's why I love it so much. I actually put some in with my Kashi this morning. It's a great way to sneak in more nutrition.

Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and even Vons sells it. I don't know where you live, but I hope you're familiar with some of those stores.

^ I do have a Trader Joe's nearby and will be checking it out for sure.
Thanks for the info!!

Ok, I apologize in advance for my rant, but here it goes:

I hate, hate, hate when people thinking, "Oh, I'm getting a 100 calorie pack or a low fat ice cream" or whatever. What they don't realize is that they're eating a mouthful of preservatives and sugar/fat substitutes. It drives me crazy when they eat crap junk food and say it's only so and so amount of calories. So that makes it alright? God, people and dieting drive me crazy. Dieting should be healthy, which means eating organic or whole foods and natural sugars and fats.

^ That sucks.
It really bugs me that eating well is so much more expensive that eating junk.

There was a segment on Today this morning about how much sugar/cals Americans get from just beverages. Average is something like 450 cals/day- which I think is nuts.
I have been trying to cut down on my juice and soda drinking.
The danish minister of health doesn't see the problem

I have noticed that too - I don't drink juice or soda anymore. I did it a lot, but then I realized that it was cheaper and healthier to stop.

Cutting down on soda first is actually a reall good suggestion. I think I freaked her out by suggesting she quit cold turkey. It was like I was suggesting that she go to rehab or something!

I think that if you dont drink it for like 2 months or more, the next time you do it just tastes plain awful!

^^^Agreed!!! Believe me all, I was a soda freak, even though I always felt so bloated and swollen when I drank it. I gave it up November 1st, 2007 and discovered how great I felt just giving up soda alone. I also discovered a whole other beverage world!!!

Also does anybody juice??? I bought a juicer and it is HANDS DOWN THE BEST PURCHASE I HAVE MADE IN MY LIFE!!!!!! Not only are all the juices so amazingly DELICIOUS but its amazing how much better I feel and more energy I have. wowowoowowow!

I'm going to start eating alot healthier from tomorrow. I just feel like my body deserves it and I should keep it healthy while I'm young!

Thanks for all the advice!

I have been thinking about getting one for a while.
Everyone I know who has one is very happy with it.
My mum drinks a fruit/veggie juice every morning with added powders and says she feels great too.

It does seem like a great way to get some extra fruits/veggies into your diet.

I love smoothie for breakfast!

siken tofu or yogurt with any fruits

maybe some fruit/vegetable juices, soy, rice, almond or chocolate milk

honey, cinnemon, nut butter, protein powder

yum!!!

^ I just had a smoothie two seconds ago!

Mine was made from - 1 cup of low-fat milk, 1 banana, 1 green apple & a spoonful of organic honey.

brokenenglish - the only thing I find with my juicer is that it is a PAIN to clean! I tend to choose the blender over the juicer everytime

Funny, I just had a smoothie too: a few dates, soymilk, lime juice, frozen raspberries, and pinch of salt.

It was tart and the most delicious shade of pink (perfect accompaniment to the not-so-healthy slab of chocolate cake I ate it with :innocent:).

Anyone have healthy food ideas for those with severe food allergies? I can't eat fresh fruit, nuts, or soy so that limits my food choices.

You should eat a lot of vegetables and salad. You can make delicious vegetable juices with a juice maker, there are practically endless variations. I especially love a bit of ginger in my juices.

Can you eat dried fruits? Those are great in muesli and/or yoghurt. Or just as snacks.

Try to eat fish at least twice a week.

:flower:

Does frozen fruit have the same amount of vitamins/antioxidants/enzymes as fresh fruit? And does -for example- sauteed spinach have the same antioxidants as fresh spinach??

That seems a little strange - having an allergy to fresh fruit in general? It seems a little too broad, like how can you be allergic to all fresh fruit? I have a hard time with this.
