Heroin Chic

i dont think its 'so passe' though i guess i was too young to know when it was around in the 90s hehe.. from the latest looks on the runways it seems different to before but also similar! i also want to adopt some of this in my look not too sure exactly how yet though. except recently ive been buying some shirts and tops a little bigger to give that look of slightly hanging off the body i like that look at the moment.

^ I totally agree with you Mullet. Especially now with so much controversy surrounding model weight, even the suggestion of a revival of heroin chic is bound to garner a s***storm. Question though, was the thread title changed from heroin to heroine?

Still, for better or worse, I love it.

Gucci s/s 97 will forever be burned in my mind as the epitome of heroin chic, it's dark, brooding, dangerous and dirty....

Thanks for bringing those images in. That one image was enough to explain the entire appeal of Stella Tennant.

I'm not sure it is too soon to bring back heroin chic but it might be a little too obvioius right now. And usually it's a recurring trend with a little more distance between its instances (20s, 70s, 90s).
There's also always a variation on the type of heroin chic - insaner flapper "up beat" (ie mixed) heroin chic of the 20s, subdued pure heroin chic of the 70s and the nitty-gritty exaggerated deconstruction heroin chic of the 90s.

Does any one have pictures of this look in daily life, so not in a fashionshow??

I think it is anachronistic. We live it a world that should be smarter than it was in the 1990s about the need for traditionalism and particularly intellectualism. And heroin chic is the movement for 15 year olds who idealise this sort of thing.

I know you will probably shout at me,but who wants to look ill by choice?:innocent:?

Sienna you're right, I'm 15 and I idealise this. But Its never going to happen without staying healthy.

archives will probably shout louder at you. it's not about who "wants" to look ill but who DID. this is not a current trend if you read the read the previous page carefully. it actually reached the streets in the mid/late 90s.

Interesting read, thanks Mea Culpa.

I think Tom Ford really summed up the look in words, it's meant to seem jaded and like you've seen (and likely done) it all. That's definitely it in a nutshell. It's oddly protective, like a defense mechanism or something.

Honestly, when I really think about it, this look HAS made a comeback. Girls and young women no longer wear the clean, natural looking makeup, if they're wearing anything it's always the smudgey eyes and greasy lips. Hair is either not done or styled to look not done, skinny has gone to new extremes thanks to Hollywood, only the clothes are different these days. Granted I'm looking at a specific age range and lifestyle, but has the look really left completely?

Heroin chic .... ok for Haider Ackermann...
but i think the influences at Galliano is totaly different and somewhere else
... but yes you could interpret it this way...

and of course thanks everyone for the archives...
it's amazing to remind this...
all this generation is growing NOW... so that's good... i just can hope the best for all this generation (and me, of course... ;) ... )

I find the 90s heroin chic trend rather sobering really. Not really opiate romantic at all, but rather realistic. And early 90s realism at that, so, actually, pessimistic more than realistic.

Or people who haven't lost loved ones to drugs. :(

*hug* im sorry huni

i wasnt around for this the first time .. so im all up for a revival .. guess it was due to come back with all the 90's vibes we have been getting

I'm actually a fan of the original heroin chic, for its simplicity and realism. I find the early 90's so much less fake than it is now, with our Paris Hiltons and the like. My fashion idols then were Moira Kelly and Winona Ryder.

Anyone have a good pics of 90's heroin chic?

To me, this looks like a Europeanized version of Japanese makeup. What I mean is that it probably shouldn't be called heroin chic because it's probably not the intent.
