How Do You Walk In High Heeled Shoes?

Thank Goodness I finally nailed walking in them and I can actually run pretty well in them...after tripping 6 times in 5 minutes that is....

What kinds of cushions can I put in my shoes to make it more comfortable to walk? They're about 4.5'' max and i have a high arch so it's a little bit more ok. Still, I'd like to be able to wear them more often. DEEDEE we could all use your help!!!

Do you think the ones at Payless are good? I mean "doctor scholls" or something?

Yeah, they work quite well. My friend used them to go to her formal and she told me they were pretty good. :p

I've bought so many pairs of shoes that are impossible to walk in ... including my new Bruges copies that I am desperate to wear. Boo hoo!

WOW!!! I read all these responses and I am in awe of what you are missing. I've posted my own response before, please let me do so again:

I wear high heels 80 % of the time. 3 1/2 inch, 4 inch, 4 1/2 inch, even 4.75 inch (most of the new CL styles). I have no problem -- NONE -- wearing them or walking in them. Here are the rules:

1.make sure the shoe is SIZED RIGHT. I mean TRULY right. If the shoes do not fit perfectly, ANY walking will mean serious pain. IF the sizing is right, there is no pain at all (at least for me).

2.Stay in shape! If you are plump -- or worse -- you are asking to move too much weight on too little propping. Not to mention that itis harder to move your body.

3.Walk in SHORT STEPS!!! Too bad if it makes you appear pre-feminist. Work it.

4.walk from THE HIPS. MOVE THE HIPS; they will move your legs FOR YOU

5.weight to the front of the foot. THAT Is where the support comes from.

6.If there is some pain, take your heels off for a bit. Or put on a tighter pair, for about 15 mins, then take those off and put on the other pair again. Your foot will now fit comfortably into the heels.

7.wear nylons or tights. NEVER wear very high heels on bare feet, the skin and the insole simply have too much friction. Inside of sliding, they abrade.

wooops... where I mis-wrote "inside of sliding," I meant "instead of sliding"

I've been getting used to heigh heels over the last year or so. I started on 2 1/2 inch for general walking round, shopping and stuff – they killed me for a while. Then I just went higher. I seriously no longer have problems with 4" +.

I have to admit, though, that I've always been a high-heeler, but I stopped for a while when I was pregnant, and that thing about riding bikes is a lie. It took a while for my feet to feel normal again in high heels. Must be a muscular or tendon thing.

My 'secret' was the pram I was pushing. Nothing helps more than having something to cling on to whilst trying to stagger round in higher and higher, and slimmer and slimmer, heels. It works an absolute treat.

If you can't get a pram (by borrowing a friend's baby even- I'm serious here!) get a car/taxi to the supermarket and march round their shelves using the shopping trolley for support.

I've also worked as a barmaid during my student days. With my high heel thing going on, I often used to think I'd pass out with pain after my usual seven hour shift. You never get used to walking round constantly on your feet for that amount of time, but as someone said before on this forum swapping shoes is the answer. Swap into high or low, your feet will still love you. So if you are determined to keep to high - just swap into high.

question: Do you wear socks or panty's in your heels? Or is it better not too?

um so here's a little story for you: last week i got invited by a friend of a friend to go to lotus, one of nyc's hottest nightclubs in the meatpacking district. we were put on the vip list and given a free vip dinner with the club's promoter.

i wore 4" heels - the oh deer marilyns (louboutin bruges knock-offs) and was absolutely FINE trekking across the city and the dancefloor.

but literally the second we get up to leave, i head for the stairs and glance up to see if anybody is coming up the stairs on my side, and my heel catches on a step and i HEAD-DIVE down the entire flight.

i knocked into some drunk dude and his glass shattered on the ground - i was so lucky i didn't get cut by any shards! and i got up and was fine except for a slightly sprained ankle, but i could still walk.

however 5 minutes later my vision started going, the blood drained from my face, i couldn't stand up, and i felt so nauseous. it was exactly like the time i got a concussion - i must have hit my head/spine slightly or jarred my nervous system.

Scary! be careful in your heels girls! Beauty over pain, but not TOO much pain!

That sucks ellonasty!

Of course you're lucky you weren't more seriously injured falling down a flight of stairs

With that experience, if you were a relative of mine, I would send you AT ONCE to a good doctor. Your experience is very much like what happens with a subdural hemotoma.

Ummm ... you're frightening me, Emery! It's been nearly a week since the injury and I feel fine ...

But could you expand a bit more about the causes, symptoms, and problems associated with subdural hematomas are?

EDIT: nevermind, looked it up on wikipedia ... I think I should get me to a doctor just in case!

^A wise move - at worst, you'll at least be certain you have no lasting problem!

I like Womanolo's suggestion about swapping shoes. I often do it. And yes, my feet say a little prayer of thank you to me. They then surrender to the new pair of heels without a peep of complaint the rest of the evening!

I've read here that it's best to put the weight forward but I personally disagree. I find that becuase the heel is already pushing my foot forward if I put my weight to the front of the foot it's very hard to walk normally, it always makes my butt stick out a little. I put the weight on my heel and I feel like that balences out how the heel is pushing my foot forward and I walk much better.

i lernt yesterday, that your ment to put your wieght on the ball of your foot. this way when you start walking in higher heels, its easier. while walking on the heel seems easier for not so high heels, its actually getting into a bad habit. now im working on putting my wieght on the ball of my foot. im finding it quite hard......

ohh well i will just keep practicing.

GuessGirl >>> you must be very slim. If I tried to walk as you suggest I would soon find the heel of my foot hurting. The BIGGEST PART of the foot is the vamp. It only makes sense to f ocus the heaviest body presure on the big part of the foot.
In any case, my method of walking works for me. Much more troublesome than how to walk in 4 - 5 inch heels is how NOT to step in pavement cracks, subway grates, etc. without constantly looking down, which a woman should never do. THAT is MUCH harder to learn!

Oh, how true. How awful seeing a totally scared person walking along whilst staring determinedly at their feet and the inches that will come next...

Liverpool City Centre (the one in England for non English) is a challenge and a half now. It looks beautiful, all cobble stones and york paving-slabs, but it is hell, I SAY HELL, for leather covered and soled heels.

When you've worn heels for a while, you'll develop a kind of sixth sense for those kind of things.

I'm fairly graceful in heels, but when I have to go downhill or down the stairs it's all over!
