How Does Everyone Afford All These Designer Items?

Consignment stores, most def. Actually, it's amazing what kind of bargains you can get in thrift stores -- for example $4 Marc Jacobs cardigans and $18 Donna Karan coats.

moohoop, where are these fabulous consignment stores!
Well, come to think of it, I once bought a see by Chloe dress for $40
Some kookai stuff on sale that was really cheap ..

but I do wait for sales...

Ebay - I'm addicted!!!!! Some great bargains online - especially once you have worked out what size you are in a particular label.

Ive never bought anything off ebay because I have heard such terrible stories of people getting ripped off.

Not any one in particular, but if you visit the ones around you often enough, an insane deal does pop up once in a blue moon. Particularly ones that don't get much business and whose owners aren't very knowledgeable of designer brands.

That's such a good question, Missy. I've been to different forums like this one and have wondered HOW women can afford so many high-end goods. But from reading their posts, I've come up with these answers...

1. Some have decent-paying jobs (not sure what kind of jobs, though)
2. Some have well-to-do husbands...
3. And the rest are spending their rent money and eating Cup-of-Noodles out of the microwave...

^I'm definetly the last one,I genuinly haven't been food shopping in weeks to compensate for all the new clothes I now own.I have absolutly no student loan left, and only a little bit of an overdraft but that didn't stop me buying a new dress and coat today ^_^

^Worse things have happened and can happen. Its been my decision to spend my money on clothes etc and I've no regrets.

Patience.

Online sample sales (right place at the right time)

Consignment stores.

I don’t have a closet full of designer wear, but I have a few key pieces.

that's hardly a smiling matter

I agree, it's pretty sad that someone would buy new clothes that they don't really need before buying food to live off of. kind of sickening how materialistic people in this world can be and I'm not aiming this directly at dumbfairy i'm just saying. I don't own many designer pieces but the ones that I do own I saved up for. I'd feel bad if I bought an $1000 top knowing that there are people around the world who don't even have shoes or food to eat or a home to go to.

^I know it wasn't aimed at me,but I have very good friends on here who could vouch that I'm not particularly materialistic.Clothes are my only vice, literally. I don't drink, smoke,go out too often or anything so I see what money I do have as there for the spending. Whilst my student loan (which was the smallest loan available to English students) may nearly be gone, its just that,a student loan, not my income.

^but don't you have to pay interest on those loans? granted, it's not as bad as people who swipe their credit cards knowing full well that there's no way they can pay it off at the end of the month but I would rather spend within my means ie. i rather i spend every last bit of my income on the stuff than use student loans for it. but then, each to his own, if it works for you then it works for you.

Shouldn't you be crediting that extra student loan money back to your loan balance, not purchasing clothes? Just a thought.

 So when you bought those few designer pieces that you saved up for, those were at times when there were no shoeless, hungry homeless people in the world?

It's kind of sickening how judgmental some people in this world can be, and I'm not aiming this directly at Grunged or seanutbutter, I'm just saying.

personally i think that the debate of how IRresponsible it is to spend money on frivolous things when there are hungry people in this world is abit dated.

usually, no matter how much money you have, spending a ridiculous amount of money on clothes will alaways remain irresponsible... but darn, sometimes it can be so wonderfully therapeutic :innocent:

I never have money to spend on designer clothes. If I want to have a decent wardrobe, I simply must buy my clothes from H&M, Vero Moda, Vila and local department stores etc. In my country are no consignment stores, not in my town however..I just watch designer`s collections and try to take influences from them when I´m shopping cheap stuff. Actually I think even if I have much money, I`m not so sure I would spend it on expensive outfits. I know how much more clothes I`d get for that money from ordinary shops. To me it`s more quantity than quality =D Therefore I cant think clothes as an investment, I`ll want many new things next season anyway..My biggest investments are Miss Sixty jeans every now and then and leather boots for winter, cost 100 euro, because I can`t walk in bad shoes.

I'm not sure why my name was mentioned here, since my previous post was simply a fair question directed to dumbfairy. Given the current economic crisis, I cannot help but wonder why a person would choose to purchase designer clothing using their student loans. Now if that's being judgmental, then so be it - I'm just curious to know the reasons behind dumbfairy's economic decisions.

the one and only Roz Chast

I can't speak for dumbfairy, but that would be my reasoning.

The designer pieces I bought were on sale and were $100 or under and I've given money to charity totaling over that amount so I'm not contradicting myself by any means as you were implying (and don't deny that). And I'm not judgmental but when you put a material item before your well being that says a lot about you.
