How Does Everyone Afford All These Designer Items?

I don't usually buy too many designer items, I'm in highschool and still living under my parents salary..but I do have a part time job which gives me a fair amount of money to spend on a shopping spree, provided that the clothes I buy are of a moderate price! I usually buy a lot of bargains and 70% of them are kind of tossed to the back of my closet never to be worn..that's kind of my problem as I keep realizing that I could have spent that wasted money on something more valuable or for a few quality pieces.
But I do have bags from Aigner and Chanel(sometimes I get spoiled:P), some dresses for special events(BCBG, Diane von Furstenburg..) and shoes from Ferregamo, I'm a shoe fiend.
Otherwise I mostly buy from sales or the more 'affordable' designer items like Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Diesel, Miss Sixty, Benetton, and MaxMara / Sportsmax.

The most important thing to remember, whether or not you're purchasing a designer item, is to refrain from using credit cards--they will only make things worse in the long run (unless you are absolutely positive you can pay it off). The number of horror stories I've read involving debt from cards is enough to turn me off completely. After all, no designer piece ought to be worth wrecking your credit for!

to a certain extend i agree with you but i also think that sometimes certain peoples choices are very very limited. for example, i am a high school student, i am unable to get a job during the year in the country that i live in and due to various regulations i could not get a proper summer job (other than say..babysitting) until i was 16. for me, "cheap stores" like h&m, zara, urban outfitters, etc. are very expensive so i only shop once a year and save up my allowance (i get to keep $9 a week and put $9 in the bank for savings) to go buy a couple nice things at those stores. i have to be very careful about what i buy and make sure that it will last me for several years. on top of that, i live in thailand where there are no thrift stores and the inexpensive thai stores are made for thai bodies...which means that i can barely squeeze my size 4 *** into a thail XL.
this in a way, limits my choices by alot and if i had more money i would probably make some different choices and 'choose' to spend in nicer stores. in the same way, there are people with much much less money than me who can only choose to buy one or two things at wall mart because thats all they have.

Not from thailand, but I can totally understand what you're saying. plus exchange rates and you soon realised that the 35 pound "cheap" shirt suddenly becomes closer to 100 (sing) dollars instead.

Sacrifices & priorities sweetie.

Also "borrowing" from friends/family members. :ninja:

Sales, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross. I don't care if its last season if its a classic. I never pay retail. (Well, only twice on my favorite pair of Diesel jeans, ever, and on a new Louis Vuitton bag.)

i am lucky to have a rather good paying job and well it's made it easier over the last few years to buy designer things. Also I never miss a sale haha, in Spain some stuff go down even with 70% well atleast in Ibiza which is were I am and well it's really just is worth wating for the sale... I honestly don't care if it's last season or so on . If i like it, who cares....

Now I'd have to say on my student loan ^_^ Which in only 7 weeks is now completely maxed out!

As I'm a college student, I don't have the money to buy a lot of designer clothes, so if I ever do, they're at consignment stores or with my mom. :X

although I do get to spend more than the average person my age, most of my stuff I did not pay full price for

Ebay - I'm addicted!!!!! Some great bargains online - especially once you have worked out what size you are in a particular label.

Me too, it's really bad :ninja: I ebay so much I have to stay up all night to finish my school work. And now my brother gave me a whole bunch of stuff to sell so it's even harder to stay away since I'm always on there listing.

Join the club. Isn't it awful that on top of my private-school education I paid for Balenciaga, YSL and Gucci with student loans?

I try to consider it a wise investment though..

well i tend to keep watch of online deals....whether boutique e-shops or private sales. its the only way for me in my current location. they're really quite the blessing for people like me.

Consignment stores, most def. Actually, it's amazing what kind of bargains you can get in thrift stores -- for example $4 Marc Jacobs cardigans and $18 Donna Karan coats.

And, of course, Filene's, TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, etc have all been getting the goods in more recently. Even Bergdorfs, during massive sale season (like.. a week ago).

i tend to buy designer pieces in sample sales or christmas/birthday and splash out. otherwise its high street!

Just save up for what you want, simple as that.

Dont spend money on things that don't matter.
