Yes, only the fakes are everywhere.... but that still means the DESIGN is all over the place, if not the craftsmanship.
But, you are very correct in some ways - Great points made, Belle.
But I'll stick with my little opinion.

Well, I won't attempt to convice you otherwise, but so are Chanel suits, diamonds and sable coats. Hermes Birkins are right up there with these iconic items, IMO. It's just that FEW knew of Birkins because they were somewhat rarified. Now, EVERYONE is an expert because they saw Martha carrying one on TV.
I would be willing to bet that even today few women have seen a real Birkin in person. Once you hold it, see it, and carry it, most understand why it's the Queen of Handbags and will remain so for the foreseeable future.
The life of a fake has an interesting trajectory. First, there is the elation of thinking that you've pulled it off. Then, DOUBT creeps in one day when some chic woman with the REAL bag gives the fake a dismissive look. Then, the fake Birkin wearer simply gets bored with her rapidly fading fake. WHY?? It's FAKE! It holds no allure. "High quality" Birkin and Kelly fakes are still inferior products, and soon even the best fakes lose their shiny "gold" finishes and fall apart. When they haven't a CHANCE of fooling ANYONE, they invariably wind up discarded in a shameful heap somewhere in the back of a closet. Rare is the woman who'll have enough guts to replace one useless fake with another soon-to-be useless fake.
The only thing that could cause the genuine Birkins and Kellys to lose their allure would be if Hermes came out with a cheaper version of the Birkin.
I doubt that will happen.
I recall the Times (I think) recently doing a survey of top fashion folk, asking whether the overexposure of the Birkin a la L'il Kim and Martha meant its demise. Not ONE said yes.
The consensus was that at some point in a woman's life, ya' just GOTTA have it.
