*Moisturizer is BASIC ... the air is recycled and there are not humidifiers of whatever in there.
*Purel or some of those sanitary thingies are like the best ... and yes, most of the people catch diseases at airports.
*I'd say ..avoid plane food altogether -unless traveling buss/first-
*If its a super long flight, I drink lots of water so I keep hydrated AND to make trips to the lavatory (remember you DO have to exercise)
*Always bring sunglasses ... if you are seated next to someone annoying .. just put on the sunglasses to have the person stay outta your toes.
*Regardless of where I am seated ... I love to chat with the flight attendants ... sometimes I even sit in the back with them and chat and they're super cool and sometimes give you tips about places to shop & eat and give you freebies and stuff ... its cool

I would say to take your own bottle water(s) because the water on airplanes let's just say is less than sanitary;)

Anything i can use to stop that?

yes--buy a saline nasal spray that will keep your nose moisturized. A doctor friend told me that if your nasal passages dry out, you're much more likely to get sick. Not very glamorous, but it does the trick.

not very glam but on a long haul flight .. maybe consider flight socks under your clothes to keep circulation going .. espesially if its a night flight and your sleeping and not moving much

lipbalm

ipod

water

moisturiser .. mini size to minimise space

something to snack on if the food is really horrid and it normally is .. as your not going to go on a long haul flight and not eat the entire time

magazine

wetwipes .. only because im paranoid about germs

toothbrush .. they normally give you this anyways but just incase

eye mask .. again normally give you this but just incase

ear pluags .. again normally give you this but just incase

some kind of cream to make your eyes look less puffy

eye drops .. to keep you looking awake and bright eyes

caffine pills

any breakables or stuff that could leak .. in hand lugage saves any messes

psp's are great for long flights .. games .. movies and mp3 player

headphones .. airplanes ones are always crap

evian spray

sucky sweets for landing helps your ears hurt less

blow up pillow .. all though you should get one anyways

some form of cardi or jumper or something .. planes are always so cold :(

phone book as you cant switch your mobile on to get them .. but you may want to use the plane phone for a good gossip

you could always bring your laptop and go on tfs :)

mini hair brush and some kind of hair spray of something .. as plane seats make my hair static lol .. maybe a spare bobble in case all goes wrong :(

also change your watch to their time asap to reduce jetlag .. all take herbal jetlag tablets and sleeping tablets to prevent jetlag eg. Melatonin

hey if all else fails and your board you could always join the mile high club ;)

I wish I would have had some on my last flight to NYC...

Avoiding a dry throat and nose is a huge concern for me on flights. Like Tuesday says, that recycled air in there is replete with germs, and drying yourself out is just begging to get sick.

Besides taking a 2L water bottle, I always put on a moistened gauze surgical mask. It dries out quickly. (Don't suffocate yourself though!:p ) It may look silly, but everyone in Japan does it so it's not so bad.

LOTS of good suggestions here! I'm leaving for my fifth trip to Europe on Monday. It's about a 9 hour flight, not counting all the waiting around in the airport before. What I've learned about long flights:

1. Loose fitting clothing is THE most important thing, in my opinion. I don't know what 1st class is like, but in coach you are CRAMPED. And you will be miserable without soft fabrics, elastic, etc. In the winter I wear a stylish dark colored jogging type outfit, pants and jacket, with a comfortable teeshirt underneath. Nothing tacky, but nothing fancy. You shouldn't look like a slob while flying - my grandfather was an airline pilot, and we've been instilled with the feeling that you 'dress up' to fly, and on flights between Belgium and Italy, I do dress very nicely. But transatlantic? Clean and comfy and neat is best. Your body swells with water retention because of the altitude and dryness and it is uncomfortable. Since it's so hot now, I'm planning on a nice, elastic waisted, floral linen skirt (just below the knees), a nice teeshirt, a cardigan, a denim jacket, and sandals for monday. Putting knee high wool blend socks in my purse because sometimes it gets really cold.

2. Water. Some people will put this at number 1, but I can handle the thirst more than things digging into my skin and torturing me when I'm trying to curl up. I drink a one liter bottle I bring with me, plus take a glass from the attendants whenever I can get one.

3. Something to eat. Most US to Europe flights, on the east coast at least, leave at night, to arrive in the morning, and the first 2 times I flew I made the mistake of not bringing food. I cannot and will not eat the suspect, sodium and fat laden airline food, and I'm not a big nighttime eater. I STARVE in the air, I don't know why. I bring different healthy snacky things now, something for the evening, and something during breakfast service - even though your body thinks it's 2AM, they're serving eggs and it's light out, and you get grumbly. My food this time will be sesame tamari rice crackers, cheddar cheese, and green grapes.

4. Something to read. I get waves of motion sickness and can't read much (can't read in a car at all) but it's good to have. An easy guilty pleasure book or magazines are best, because of all the distractions around you. And the movies are crap, but I usually wind up watching when I'm too tired to read, yet can't sleep. I can never sleep on planes.

5. An extra pillow, if you can manage it. I always beg an extra from the attendants, and need one behind my neck, and one behind my low back. Those coach seats KILL.

6. Make sure you get up frequently - at LEAST once an hour, preferably twice, to stretch your legs. Walk the aisles, hang out (by yourself, if you talk to someone you get told to sit back down, after 9-11) by the bathrooms and do leg stretches that will cut down on the risk of developing a blood clot.

7. Don't drink. However tempting those mini bottle of wine and liquor are, they will dehydrate, and they affect you MUCH more than on land because of the altitude. Believe me. Unless you're a lush, you'll regret even one :D I had one mini bottle of red one time, thinking it would help me sleep. It did, but I woke up about 3 hours later RUNNING for the bathroom. I don't think I've ever been that nauseous in my life. I think it was the combo of alcohol and motion.

8. Wear a mask to breath through if you have allergies, get sick easily, or just want to. Lots of people do it. It's no big deal, and you shouldn't be embarrassed. The recycled air is HORRIBLE. I generally wear one for at least half the flight - when they serve peanuts, I'm deathly allergic, and when anyone is coughing or sneezing. Rather have a couple raised eyebrows than come down with something or have to use my epi-pen.

I always bring :
Handcream - it's amazing how dry my hands can get while flying
Moisturiser - ditto for my face
Lipbalm
Cleansing wipes
Water
Magazines
A travel pillow if it's an overnight flight.

maybe a small ziploc baggie of dried fruit, a few raw almonds, raw sunflower seeds to stave off hunger and avoid the "fun packs" that are so unhealthy:doh: :flower:

ipod, eyemask and lubricating EYEDROPS.
For some reason no matter how short the flight, my eyes always dry out and turn very red.

Has anybody travelled internationally recently? I will be travelling to Rome soon and I am wondering what happens with things like hand cremes, moisturizers, etc. Can we carry any of that?

hi sleepy, they don't allow any type of liquids anymore (not even water!!!). I'm pretty sure you can't carry moisturizers either. Also no electronics!! what a pooper. you have to check everything now.

i think i'm just going to work hard and buy myself my own private jet just so i can bring my own inflight essentials :p

I just got back to new york from budapest and anything with a liquid or gel consistency will be taken away from you pre-boarding, so no moisturizers, toothpaste, liquid makeup etc.

The interesting thing to examine would be how long are those restrictions going to last? I would drive or take boats if they still have bans on essentials like lotion in a couple years.

Yeah, this is actually putting me off going on holiday next year, knowing I may not be able to take things such as toothpaste and makeup! How ridiculous. Apparently if you buy cosmetics and such from the airport they have no problem with you taking them on though?!

I wouldn't rely on them being allowed cos you bought it at the airport, even if you show them the shopping bag and receipt, it could be possible you changed the content at the toilet or brought doubles of the packaging with explosives and changing them etc... Don't you get small packs with toothpaste and moisturizer from the airlines anyway (on long flights)?

With the way that airlines have been downsizing as of late, I would doubt it.

It obnoxious and inconveniant but I'd rather fly without my mousturizers than be put in any kind of possible danger:shock:
